From the legendary #1 New York Times bestselling author of Plum Island and Night Fall comes this “action-packed, relentlessly paced thriller” (Publishers Weekly, starred review) featuring US Army combat veteran Daniel “Mac” MacCormick, now a charter boat captain, who is about to set sail on his most dangerous cruise.Daniel “Mac” Graham MacCormick seems to have a pretty good life. At age … seems to have a pretty good life. At age thirty-five he’s living in Key West, owner of a forty-two-foot charter fishing boat The Maine. But after serving five years in the Army and purchasing a boat with a big bank loan, Mac’s finances are more than a little shaky.
One day, Mac is sitting in the famous Green Parrot Bar, contemplating his life, and waiting for Carlos, a hotshot Miami lawyer heavily involved with anti-Castro groups. Carlos wants to hire Mac and The Maine for a ten-day fishing tournament to Cuba at the standard rate, but Mac suspects there is more to this and turns it down. The price then goes up to two million dollars, and Mac agrees to hear the deal, and meet Carlos’s clients—a beautiful Cuban-American woman named Sara Ortega, and a mysterious older Cuban exile, Eduardo Valazquez.
What Mac learns is that there is sixty million American dollars hidden in Cuba by Sara’s grandfather when he fled Castro’s revolution. With the “Cuban Thaw” underway between Havana and Washington, Carlos, Eduardo, and Sara know it’s only a matter of time before someone finds the stash—by accident or on purpose. And Mac knows if he accepts this job, he’ll walk away rich…or not at all.

It stood up to all the others he has written. It is funny at times, sarcastic, and witty. I loved the characters and plot!
DeMille parks John Cory in the garage and takes a new character for a spin. Great yarn and informative about post-thaw Cuba.
A good read! Believable, even with strange characters and odd happenings. Nice distraction.
The Cuban Affair, Nelson DeMille’s latest thriller, vividly comes to life thanks to his penchant for inventing quirky characters. His new hero, “Mac” MacCormick, served two tours in Afghanistan. Now he’s captain of a fishing boat in the Florida Keys, considering a new job. Carlos wants him to enter his boat in a fishing tournament in Cuba.
Mac suspects this is not the real purpose of the assignment when Carlos offers him two million dollars. Enter Sara, a beautiful Cuban-American, who persuades him to take the job. Sara wants him to recover sixty million dollars hidden in Cuba by her grandfather, who fled Castro’s revolution. What follows is an action-packed adventure complete with betrayals and a close-up view of Cuba’s communist police state. And romance, of course.
No one does humorous dialogue like DeMille. If you liked his protagonist John Corey, you will love Mac MacCormick. Mac’s laid-back attitude and dialogue with other characters, some villains, some not, are laugh-out-loud funny. yet totally believable.
The action takes place during the Cuban Thaw, before Americans were legally allowed to visit Cuba. No need for you to go there. DeMille’s descriptions of Cuba, the sights, the sounds, the landscape and the nightclubs are vivid enough to take you there. I’ll not reveal the ending, but it includes boat chases, helicopters, gunfire and a satisfying conclusion. Not to be missed!

I enjoyed this book and the fact that it wasn’t predictable.
Vintage Nelson DeMille
It’s a long book, too long.
Mac is a former combat army officer and now owns a boat. He is asked to enter Cuba to save a 60 million $ treasure, and there he will fall in love with Sarah, the second heroine. Together they avoid the police in Cuba (or will it be a failure).
Unfortunately, there is no tension in the book. Well, perhaps at the end of the book there is some action. It’s like a movie of an atmosphere you expect something to happen at the moment, but here the expectations faded away before the battle came.
And I also have a warning – this book has quite a bit of sex in it.
Love this author! 3rd of his books I have read in a month.
One of the best books we’ve read in months. 5 stars!
Love that sarcasm.
Never read a bad DeMille novel. Can’t wait until his next comes out!
Great story
Enjoyed the main character’s wit/sarcasm.
Typical dry humor of Deville’s main character, with sweet romance coupled with huno and chase through Cuba. Seems predictable but it is not. Also very informative history mingled throughout. Never a dull moment. I could read it again!
Light read with witty dialog, interesting characters that you soon begin to like. Believable plot. A really fun read.
This novel is worth reading, especially for fans of DeMille. A Cuban Affair is a beach read. Good story, DeMille style, and worth a vacation read for sure.
Not DeMille’s best
This was a very fun book that gives a good look at life in Cuba… and the issues of those who have family there. I thought it was good, but it is not my favorite DeMille Book .
Another great novel from Nelson DeMille. This was so interesting because it gave us a glimpse into Cuba today. The story really had you hooked, and just when you thought you knew what was happening, there was an about turn. Loved it. It kept me me interested right to the end. Now that I’ve been introduced to Daniel ‘Mac’ MacCormick, I hope there might be another book about him. He’s a lot like John Corey. Job well done Mr. DeMille!
Well written, but a bit disappointing at the end for having failed in completing the mission.
