From the legendary #1 New York Times bestselling author of Plum Island and Night Fall comes this “action-packed, relentlessly paced thriller” (Publishers Weekly, starred review) featuring US Army combat veteran Daniel “Mac” MacCormick, now a charter boat captain, who is about to set sail on his most dangerous cruise.Daniel “Mac” Graham MacCormick seems to have a pretty good life. At age … seems to have a pretty good life. At age thirty-five he’s living in Key West, owner of a forty-two-foot charter fishing boat The Maine. But after serving five years in the Army and purchasing a boat with a big bank loan, Mac’s finances are more than a little shaky.
One day, Mac is sitting in the famous Green Parrot Bar, contemplating his life, and waiting for Carlos, a hotshot Miami lawyer heavily involved with anti-Castro groups. Carlos wants to hire Mac and The Maine for a ten-day fishing tournament to Cuba at the standard rate, but Mac suspects there is more to this and turns it down. The price then goes up to two million dollars, and Mac agrees to hear the deal, and meet Carlos’s clients—a beautiful Cuban-American woman named Sara Ortega, and a mysterious older Cuban exile, Eduardo Valazquez.
What Mac learns is that there is sixty million American dollars hidden in Cuba by Sara’s grandfather when he fled Castro’s revolution. With the “Cuban Thaw” underway between Havana and Washington, Carlos, Eduardo, and Sara know it’s only a matter of time before someone finds the stash—by accident or on purpose. And Mac knows if he accepts this job, he’ll walk away rich…or not at all.

I have pretty much read or listened to all of DeMille’s work. What I don’t like is that while his main character may be different in each book (when not a series) the protagonist’s personality rarely changes from one book to the next. HOWEVER, what I do love, is his protagonist’s personality. Rarely do I read a DeMille book without laughing out loud at a piece of witty dialog.

I love all of Nelson’s books, and this one kept me turning the pages for several days.
DeMille does not disappoint with his signature humor and style of writing that makes the hero so likable and real. Daniel “Mac” MacCormick is no ordinary guy. He is a bright 35 yr old army vet who has been to combat in Afghanistan and prefers the laid-back life in the Keys over Wall Street or the bustling Northeast. He has been vetted by Carlos, a Miami lawyer, and Cuban-American clients who need the right charter boat captain to pull off a venture into Cuba whereby they need to recover hidden money and items left behind after the Revolution. Getting rich and getting the girl factor into the decision to throw caution to the wind in planning entry and escape from this dangerous country.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance copy of this book in return for an honest review.
I’ve read quite a few of DeMille’s books over the years, and have enjoyed everyone. This one was no exception. DeMille has a new character, Daniel MacCornick (Mac), a former U. S. Army combat veteran now captain of a charter fishing boat in Key West. Mac’s life is pretty quiet, until he is hired to go to Cuba and bring back $60 million to be repatriated to its rightful owners (well, the Cuban government might take exception to that). Problem is, this is an all or nothing payday.
Like all of DeMille’s characters, Mac is clever and wisecracking, yet likeable. The caper is thrilling and along the way you learn some history and politics. One of the things I like about DeMille’s books is that they always teach you something you didn’t know (read Plum Island if you haven’t). We get a glimpse of life and culture in Cuba, as well as the long for their home felt by many exiles. The writing is superb, so make yourself a Cuba Libre, sit back and prepare to be entertained!

Boring and poorly written. Not up to DeMille’s other books.
The Cuban Affair had a lot of action and great characters. In addition, there was a combination of history and geography that I found very appealing. It kept my attention from beginning to end and is a great read.
Action-packed thriller a la DeMille. Very enjoyable page turner.
My first book by Nelson DeMille. I don’t read a lot in this genre but kept seeing this book around, so I decided to pick it up: an Army veteran (Mac) who owns a fishing boat in Key West, Florida agrees to help a small group of Cuban Americans (including a beautiful young Sarah) retrieve millions of dollars of hidden money from a cave in Cuba.
There were a couple of things that surprised me about this book:
1. The emphasis on the romance. That’s not a problem for me! I love romance, and I don’t think many non-romance writing male authors include enough of it. Mac and Sarah actually spend quite a bit of time talking about their relationship. Their feelings develop pretty quickly, but it’s a novel so it’s forgivable.
2. The descriptions. Again, not a problem for me. I loved getting a feel for the country and setting.
Those two elements together did make the book drag a bit for me — it started and ended strong, but slowed a bit in the middle — but overall it was a fun, easy read. There was a lot of humor in the story, and I enjoyed it very much. Again, I don’t read a lot in this genre, but I suspect you’d enjoy this book if you like Clancy and Grisham type books.
R-rated: for sex (not a lot of it, but one mildly descriptive scene) and swearing.
Somewhat contrived with the outcome quite predictable. Not the best DeMille effort.
Although the book was good, it was not his best work. It’s hard to compare anything to John Cory.
Mac is hurting for money and when given the opportunity to make a bundle, why not? He quickly realizes, he’s over his head in this and can’t get out. This is well written and a lot of fun to read.
My husband and I are both always eager to read another Nelson DeMille book and this one is no exception. It is a really eye opening look at life in a communistic dictatorship as well as an action packed political thriller. Highly readable and certainly up to DeMille’s usual standard of highly skilled writing and character development.
All of Demille books are very readable and entertaing. I read this one twice.
I am a big Demille fan but this is not one of his best. I picked it because I was going to Cuba and thought it might provide some interesting atmospherics and information. Instead, I found it too much a screed about anti-communism, not a good insight into the people and place, and the twists and turns were not particularly surprising. A decent read but I would choose one of his other books if you want a good introduction to DeMille
Just okay for Nelson a good story though.
Sorry, but he’s written much better books than this one.
It was one of my favorite books. Talking about how times used to be in Cuba and how they are now. It was well done.
Always exciting DeMille book
DeMille writes great books
Love Mr. De Mille’s handling of a still controversial topic. Couldn’t put it down.
