A modern day fantasy with realistic characters. David becomes deaf at the age of seven, which allows him to ‘tune in’ to other senses, in particular understanding the power of crystals which allows him to explore a parallel universe. As with the authors other books, you feel a real sense of moral teachings with story & it leaves the reader with plenty to ponder.
What a whimsical retelling of the age-old David and Goliath story imbued with colorful characters as unique as young David’s crystal collection. The Goliath in this case revolves around his dad’s workplace. The company is for sale, and that unfortunate fact would leave his father unemployed. Based on his dad’s talent, David smells a rat and wants to find out what’s going on. If, for no other reason than to help his disabled sister, Sally.
Time however is a blend of the past and the future, entwined with the present. “A hole in reality is a psychic phenomenon, measurable only by your own metaphysical awareness.” In other words, hold on to your hat, because David is about to go for a sail of a lifetime. He needs to right the wrongs and find truth aboard the sleek white clipper that magically transports David through that hole in his reality.
Once he lands, he has to save Princess Saliana who is high up in the Prism Palace’s highest tower. There’s a Glass Snake, a High Priestess, a Gypsy and characters that seem remarkably like people David already knows.
The story is enjoyable and the descriptions vivid. Find out what happens to David, Sally and his dad. Will David make it home or end up in a Glass Volcano? Will treachery and mayhem rule or will evil be left powerless, when facing the light of truth? Read The Crystal Clipper and find out!
s in an exciting, magical dream
When you are into some magic, where you, as in dreams, can come at places and in situations that you never could imagine when you were awake…
When you love exciting, heroic stories…
When you love the good guys win and there is a great message in the book…
Then I recommend The Crystal Clipper, the first book of ‘The Moon Singer Trilogy’ by Barbara Roman because this book has it all.
I was curious and started reading and kept reading. The story of the deaf kid David Nickerson, whose mother died, sister sits in a wheelchair and his dad is maltreated by his boss, is so intriguing but energizing.
Yes, as I said before, there is a good ending, but not all problèmes are solved at the end. That’s why I couldn’t wait and started the next book of this series The War Chamber to see what adventures, what dreams David Nickerson is going to do next.
The Crystal Clipper (The Moon Singer Book 1) by B. Roman
This is a well thought out book which should appeal to young teens. It is the first in a series, and tells the story of David, a deaf boy who is trying to deal with the trials and tribulations which life has dealt him and his family.
David has a fascination for crystals and his aunt gifts them to him every time she comes back home from her travels. One day, he is cleaning the crystals when he finds himself aboard The Crystal Clipper, sailing on a tumultuous sea of glass to a cold, dark land.
As the story unfolds, the reader and David become aware that he is living in a juxtaposed timeline with characters that are reminiscent to those in his real world. (This reminded me of “The Wizard of Oz” only on a much darker level.) I loved the way in which the writer subtly introduces each new character in the dark world. They are portrayed in such a way that through subtle traits, the reader can associate them with the original characters in David´s other real life dimension.
David must complete certain tasks in order to restore the dark island back to its original glory. Can he complete his mission without falling under the spell of the wicked High Priestess Jaycina? Will his actions affect his real life? I´m not going to tell you! Read the book and find out.
A journey through time begins when David wants to save his father’s job. David’s aunt Dorothy gave him special crystals. David doesn’t know just how special until the day he is transported from the world he knows to another land. This is a great adventure and a heartwarming tale. I have read a couple of books by this author and have found heart-touching reads in the stories.
