Mysterious Events Plague a Greenhouse in Pennsylvania’s Amish Country When Vernon King, his son, and son-in-law are involved in a terrible accident, three women are left to cope with their deaths, as they become the sole providers of the family they have left. The women’s only income must come from the family greenhouse, but someone seems to be trying to force them out of business. Amy King … business.
Amy King has just lost her father and brother, and her mother needs her to help run the family’s greenhouse. It doesn’t seem fair to ask her to leave a job she loves, when there is still a sister and brother to help. But Sylvia is also grieving for her husband while left to raise three children, and Henry, just out of school, is saddled with all the jobs his father and older brother used to do. As Amy assumes her new role, she also asks Jared Riehl to put their courtship on hold. When things become even more stressful at the greenhouse, will Amy crumble under the pressure?

This was a hard but therapeutic read for me since I just recently lost my mom. The Crow’s Call centers around a family who lost three members in one night to a tragic accident. I could not fathom as I am having a hard time with just one.
It is very different from Brunstetter’s usual romantic fiction in that we have a mystery that runs throughout and will continue in the second book, The Mockingbird’s Song. Even after a few days of finishing the novel I am still trying to figure the mystery. I like that as it keeps me thinking about the book until the next release.
While reading I saw some of the grieving processes I am experiencing and it made me realize it is ok. Grief is different for all. You grieve on your time and no one else’s.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher, Barbour Publishing, Inc/Shiloh Run Press, through NetGalley. Any and all opinions expressed in the above review are entirely my own.
I love how New York Times Best Selling Author Wanda Brunstetter can take every day routine occurrences in the life of the Amish and write about it in such a way that readers find it hard to put her books down. In The Crows Call Wanda adds mysterious events to spice up the story and keeps her readers guessing who it could be that is causing all this chaos in the King family’s lives lately. Who is so much against them that they would deliberately vandalize their business and property . Why would they do this to a widow and what’s left of her family, after the terrible accident that killed her husband, Son and Son in law? While they are left vulnerable and in shock with hearts that are raw with grief.
Life must go on so Widow Belinda King reopens the greenhouse after the funerals. Amy, her daughter is a big help and encouragement to her mother but her youngest son Henry is filled with bitterness and anger because of losing his Dad, brother and brother in law. He has a lot of responsibility now since he must fill in and try to do the work his father and older brother did. Belinda’s oldest daughter has lost her husband and is left with two young children. Sylvia is so filled with grief for the loss of her young husband and her other family members that she can barely function to take care of the children much less help out in the greenhouse. Then mysterious things begin to happen first to their property and then to their greenhouse. Why and who would do these things to them? Could someone deliberately be trying to put them out of business?
All readers of Amish fiction or fans of Wanda Brunstetter will want to read this book. The Crows Call is the first book of the Amish Greenhouse series. The next book will be The Mocking Birds Song. Readers will be pleased by the fact that some of the characters from the Pray Jar Series will show up in this new series too.
I received a paperback copy of The Crows Call from the Author and Barbour Publishing. Thank you! A favorable review was not requested.
All opinions expressed here in this review are my own
Great story with an intriguing mystery that will keep readers wanting more. Fans of Amish fiction will love this novel and look forward to more books in the series.
The Crow’s Call by Wanda E. Brunstetter is the first novel in the Amish Greenhouse Mystery series. Michelle and Ezekiel from The Prayer Jar trilogy are in this series. I thought The Crow’s Call was well-written with steady pacing and developed, realistic characters. You could feel the character’s emotions pouring from the pages. I felt so bad for this family who suffered such a devastating loss. To lose three family members in one day is unthinkable. Each one of them is grieving and each one handles it differently. They struggle to get through each day. Their workload has increased, but they must soldier on. Unfortunately, Sylvia, the eldest daughter, is too grief stricken to do more than mind her children. Henry, the youngest child, is full of anger and bitterness which he takes out on the family. Amy is our main protagonist. Before the deaths, she was looking forward to her beau proposing. With all the added responsibilities, Amy has little time to see Jared Riehl. Ezekiel and Michelle are settled in Clymer, New York where their bee business is doing well, and Ezekiel just drew the lot for a minister. He feels he should move back home, but his mother does not want him to disrupt his new life. I enjoyed getting to know the various characters and their stories. It makes for an interesting book. As if the King family does not have enough to handle, someone starts sabotaging the greenhouse. They do not know if it is Henry acting out, the new English neighbors, the homeless woman, the owners of the new greenhouse in town or an unknown entity. The crow was an interesting addition. Amy has feared crows since a child and believes its caw foretells doom. Is the crow warning them of danger or just a coincidence? Faith plays an important part of the King family’s lives. A terrible tragedy can either draw you closer to God or pull you away. We see a combination of both in The Crow’s Call. The Crow’s Call allows us to follow the King family as they struggle with their grief and attempt to move forward with their lives. It is not an easy process. You move forward a step and then go two steps backward. This realistic novel will tug at your heartstrings. The Crow’s Call has family, friendship, community, faith and mystery. I am eager to read The Mockingbird’s Song when it is released.
This is a great book but I was disappointed that the book ended without solving the mystery of whom is vandalizing the Kings property after the father, a son, and a son-in-law where killed when a car ran into their buggy. I recommend this book as a good Amish book even with the cliffhanger. The characters are interesting.
The Crow’s Call: Amish Greenhouse Mystery by Wanda E. Brunstetter – So I won an advanced copy of this thinking that I might like it more because it was a mystery. I’ve come to the conclusion that my grandmother’s love of all things Amish did not make it to me. Well written, nice pacing, and if you like the Amish lifestyle troupe it was great! I’ll save this for grandma though! Happy Reading!
The King family has been through she much loss. Watching this family try to run a business and support each other will have you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens next. Jared is a wonderful man who is always there to help others. I couldn’t stop reading this book.
This is a wonderful Amish novel!
My emotions were completely caught up in this story before the end of the first chapter. I connected with all of the King family as soon as I met them. Anyone who has had a loved one die will relate with the deep grief they are dealing with. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing how the author had the various family members deal with it.
I liked seeing how the mystery developed. It wasn’t resolved by the end of this book so I guess this is going to be an ongoing storyline through the series.
There were a number of community characters that came into the story in a way that I believe this series is set in the same location as The Prayer Jars series, by the same author. I will definitely be reading those books as soon as possible.

Very good book! Couldn’t put it down. Can’t wait to read the next book in this series. Wanda is a wonderful author. If you haven’t read any of her books yet you definitely should.
” Crow, ” Crow, ” Crow ” the crow,’s foreboding call continued. Amy shuddered and moved on.`
The Crow’s Call is from Wanda Brunstetter’s new mystery series Amish Greenhouse Mystery and it is book you don’t want to miss. Vernon King, one of his sons and his son-in-law are killed in a horrific accident. Left to grieve their loss and to take over the family’s greenhouse business is his widow, Belinda, his daughters, Amy and Sylvia, who also lost her husband, in the accident and his son, Henry. All are grieving in their own way and trying to keep the family greenhouse business running. Suddenly random acts of vandalism occurs and a black crow makes it,s appearance.
I personally like the way that Wanda Brunstetter shows how each of the family members deal with their grief and also the story itself.
I m looking forward to reading the next book in this series The Mocking Bird’s Song.
When I think Wanda Brunstetter, I think clean, Amish romances. I think carefree, happy characters with inspirational messages woven within. So, imagine my surprise when I see that she is writing a mystery series! Yes, it’s still Amish, but it’s a mystery series! I love suspenseful mysteries so I was super excited to check this one out!
The characters that Brunstetter chiseled for this novel quickly stole my heart! My heart went out to them as a devestating tragedy envelopes them. I felt all their emotions as if they were my own. Following them as they try to piece the puzzle together on the vandalizing and the who’s and why’s of it all, was truely interesting and not something I would expect from Brunstetter. But she did it perfectly, just like she always does!
If you want an engrossing, inspirational, roller coaster ride of a story, then grab this first book up in her new Amish Greenhouse Mysteries. You’ll fall in love with her writing all over again and you won’t want the story to end! I am highly anticipating what will happen in book 2! I can’t wait. Well done, Brunstetter! Well done!

Readers who are fond of stories of Amish life will enjoy this book.
This Amish novel centers around the deaths of several family members—a tough topic and one that provides plenty of tension. The King family must not only deal with their loss but also struggle to run their greenhouse business. Will Amy have to give up her courtship since she has no time for outside activities? Will her younger brother, Henry, continue to act out? The various relationships and conflicts show authentic situations and seem realistic, even if some of their conversations don’t. The title refers to the birds Amy dislikes but Henry tries to tame. Reading about all their problems will take your mind off your own. And this first of a new series doesn’t solve the mystery about who is trying to harm their business so I look forward to the next one to learn more. I received a copy from Netgalley. All opinions are my own.
I have to start by saying I got a complimentary copy from Wanda. But I would have bought this book! I could not put it down! This is Wanda’s first branching out to mystery and it kept me guessing right up to the end! The story is about a daughter willing to give up everything to be with her mother after her father and 2 brothers are killed. Mysterious happenings on their farm and the daughter learning to let go kept me reading late into the night! I really think this is one of Wanda’s best books! I encourage everyone to read it!
I enjoyed this book By Wanda. The details of their day-to-day life were intriguing. I can’t wait to read the 2nd book in this series and find out a little more about what happens!
Riddle me this: what do you get when your favorite Amish author adds a mystery to her most recent release? Why, Wanda Brunstetter’s The Crow’s Call, the first in the series, Amish Greenhouse Mystery!
It can’t be real, it just can’t be possible that all three of them are gone, but they are. Following a tragic accident that killed Vernon King, his son and son in law, Amy King, along with her mother and sister in law Sylvia struggle to maintain the family farm. Running a large greenhouse and the farm isn’t easy, leaving the women beyond exhaustion, yet determined.
The problem is somebody seems to be trying to put them out of business, who could it be? Could it be young Henry who has had to take over all his father and brother’s farm chores, including the beehive which he particularly dislikes?
How about the homeless woman who randomly showed up at the greenhouse, often taking something with her when she left, unpaid? Or maybe it is the grumpy new neighbor across the road? Whoever it is something strange is definitely happening in the greenhouse.

Can bad things happen when you hear a Crow call? Well this is what seems to happen every time Amy King hears one……..If you enjoy good, clean, uplifting stories, then this is the book for you. It is a story about the deep faith of an Amish family who lost a husband, son and son-in-law to a terrible traffic accident while just leaving their home to go for ice cream for the Mother’s birthday celebration. We can never take life lightly, for all could change in a moment of time. One cannot imagine the horror and pain that brought to the ones left behind. A story of how they faced life without their loved ones and tried to pick up the pieces and go on while holding on to their faith in God…….I received a complimentary copy of The Crow’s Call from the publisher and Netgalley.
The Crow’s Call by Wanda Brunstetter, was a very enjoyable read! I just loved the little bit of mystery added to the story! Can’t wait to read the next book in this series!
I received a copy of this book from the author, but was not required to give a positive review. This is my honest opinion of this book.
What happens when a tragic accident takes the lives of three members of one family? How do the survivors carry on? The answers to these questions are the basis of this new book by Wanda E. Brunstetter and it powerfully illustrates why she has become one of the best-selling authors of our time. She completely captures the varying emotions of these family members after their tragedy. We witness the strength and deep faith of a woman who has lost a husband, son, and son-in-law; the faltering faith of a young widow who wonders how God allowed this to happen; and the outright rebellion of a teenage boy who has lost his father, brother, and brother-in-law. Several mysterious occurrences involving their Amish greenhouse, a romance that seems doomed, and a crow named Charlie all contribute even more interest to this story.
The Crow’s Call has everything that I’ve come to expect in a Brunstetter book and it offers readers a reunion with characters from The Prayer Jars series. An inspiring faith message and a mystery that is left unsolved certainly makes it a book to recommend and I am eagerly waiting to read The Mockingbird’s Song, book two of the Amish Greenhouse Mystery.
I received a copy of this book from the author but there was no obligation to post a favorable review. These are my own thoughts.
The first book in Wanda’s new Amish Greenhouse Mystery series. A terrible tragic in an Amish family puts a lot of stress on continuing to run the family business and puts a hold on others personal relationships. Besides all the grieving a Crow’s call adds to other situations that happen to bring more worry. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series to see what happens next.
