–A serial killer is littering the south shore beach of Long Island with the bones of his female victims stuffed into burlap bags. Nick Mannino, The Good Lawyer and former South Bronx Legal Aid Attorney born into a mobster dominated family, is a complex and compelling character–his constant court battles nothing more than a futile effort to hide and deny a haunting truth about himself and worse–a sinewy bloodline marred by unspeakable crimes.
Then this brutal serial killer turns on him, and worse, his family.
As much a thriller as it is a mystery, with an ending as riveting as that in Silence of the Lambs, The Criminal Lawyer is also a love story, a novel of family secrets, and crimes beyond forgiveness.

The Second book in Thomas Benigno’s The Good Lawyer series, it’s based in part on real events involving a serial killer. The story is well written, hard boiled and more than a little disturbing. There an awful lot of twists and turns following former legal aid attorney with a crime family background, Nick Mannino. Mannino and his two, now adult, children have become the target of a serial killer who places women’s bodies in burlap bags and leaves them on a beach. There are well-developed characters and a plot with twists and turns too numerous to mention. An excellent read.
Having read the first book in this two book series, The Good Lawyer, I looked forward to reading this one. It was as well written as the first. After his son’s girlfriend was presumably kidnapped, and four bodies of prostitures are found, this lawyer sets out with a PI to locate the serial killer. With many twists and turns, I could not put this book down. Though not much of a triller/mystery reader, I enjoy this newer author.
Looking for a Grisham-like book? This is not it! Now, that is not to say that this book is not as good; it is! But the genre here is crime fiction– think private investigator and killers. I loved the characterization. At one point the plot makes your heart beat pound, just as it does to the protagonist. I will not spoil it for you; you will know when. Another surprise that made the book special was a very clear conclusion. The killer was not just “found”; the author takes the time to fill out what happened to our “hero” after the climax of the story. This is not one of those cuz crime stories where a million unanswered questions lead the reader to desire to PURCHASE next book in the series. Lol. Enjoy this book;you will end up purchasing another by Mr. Beningo, but because you admired the depth of his writing ability, not because the first book left you unfulfilled and questioning.
I truly enjoy this author and his legally-based stories. I wish he had more books available.
Mr. Benigno is a wonderful writer. I love his style. It’s just that this sequel to The Good Lawyer made me very depressed. I was left at the end of the first book imagining the main character going on the have a wonderful career and living happily ever after with his lady love. Should have stopped there. The reality was much too depressing. If you want to know what happened, read it. It’s well written. If you are looking for the happily ever after, forget it.
Great read.
Should have ended when killer was killed. After that it dragged on and on and on giving updates on every character in book. Got very boring then
Well written with a fair amount of court activity
I enjoyed the first book so I read this one. It wasn’t quite as good as the first but still very entertaining.
Excellent book.
A good read which I enjoyed….Thanks Joy
Excellent writing!
Good and easy to read. Wish I was one
Twas a good read that could actually have been non fiction. Could be a good movie material.
