Heroes aren’t supposed to drive beat-up old trucks, and they don’t go around breaking a girl’s heart. But Garrett Grayson, Macy Joyce’s particular hero, does both of those things. Well, Macy doesn’t need a hero, just a little bit of help around her ranch. Someone to figure out who’s been cutting fences and throwing rocks through her windows. Garrett, who’s on leave from the Army, can certainly … handle the job. But can Macy handle the way her pulse quickens every time she sees him? Can she handle the way her six-year-old son is starting to look at this man who’s lived in her heart since high school? Can she handle it when Garrett leaves—which she knows he will?
As far as Garrett is concerned, the only good thing he’s ever done for Macy is leave her behind. He never did deserve a girl like her. But when Macy’s brother—and Garrett’s former best friend—calls and asks him to help protect her, Garrett agrees, knowing it’s only for a short time. Surely he can work on the ranch without getting involved with her. Ever since his misspent youth, Garrett’s been trying to redeem himself, to show everyone in the little town of Heartstring that he’s not the troublemaker he once was. Breaking Macy’s heart again will just prove he hasn’t changed a bit. So he’s going to stay away from her. He’ll just ignore the way his heart feels too big in his chest whenever he sees her, or how she’s grown into a gorgeous, sexy woman. He won’t let his feelings show. No matter what.
Problem is, he hadn’t counted on how tough it would be to walk away—again—from the only girl he’d ever loved.

more
Garrett Grayson, on leave from the Army, agrees to protect his friend’s sister, Macy Joyce, single mother and ranch owner when unexpected things occurred at her ranch, such as cutting fences, throwing rocks, and other prank-like happenings. Macy was the one Garrett had always loved back in their younger days, but he walked away from her, thinking he had done the right thing. Now that he was back, even for a short time, he wanted to make amends and show everyone he had changed. So the best thing was not to get close to Macy when he had to return to the Army and leave her again.
This time, Macy’s 6-year-old son also seems to be crazy about Garrett. Has he changed? Does Macy want to open her heart once more and risk the pain if he leaves her?
There are many good things in this book. The story line is well-paced, the characters are appealing and believable, and the feelings are real. Garrett and Macy are strong and likable characters who both continued to care for each other despite the years apart. They deserve a HEA – will they trust their hearts and follow their feelings?
Love reconnected with a twist
When Garrett returns home from the Army he reconnects with Macy. He is intent upon making up for the errors of his youth and has completed as many projects around town as he could find. When his old friend Duncan calls him from Dallas asking him if he can help his sister, he jumps at the chance. She has been having some strange and potentially dangerous incidents on her property, and as a single mother her brother is concerned both of them. Obviously he signs on for the “duty”, and so the story goes. As always the characters are so realistic that you can imagine yourself living next door to them and even being their friend.

This is a wonderful well-written second chance romance, it’s filled with plenty of drama and emotion, there is bit of intrigue in a whodunnit kind of way. I really liked the characters, both Garrett and Macy are strong characters. They have wonderful chemistry that didn’t fade over the years. Little Trey was adorable. Highly entertaining story.
This is a very enjoyable read. Garret and Macy get their second chance at a HEA in this entertaining read. I felt that the story was easy to get into and it held my interest easily with a blend of powerful emotions, drama, suspense, secrets and romance. I found it easy to root for this couple and to feel for each of them as they struggle overcome their painful baggage and let go of past hurts.
I really enjoyed this book. Wonderful characters – especially 6 year old Trey – and good themes. A mystery thread running through and overcoming both the past and our notions of ourselves.

This is a well written book with strong , well developed characters in Macy and Garrett. The author does a fantastic job bringing drama, mystery and intrigue as well as the hot chemistry and romance. The supporting characters play a huge role in bringing the story around as well as the vividly painted scenes. I especially loved Macy’s adorable six year old son,Trey who brings every scene he’s in to life. I loved reading their story and would highly recommend this book.

Single mom, Macy Joyce, and her young son, Trey, are having a hard time on the farm, Pride & Joyce. Cut fence lines, cut power lines, and firecrackers exploding on a farm should not keep happening. Macy is at her wit’s end. If she cannot find out who is sabotaging her farm, she will lose it.
Macy’s brother, Duncan, asks his old school chum, Garret Grayson, to keep an eye on things and help Macy out on the farm. Garret says he will help until his army leave is finished; then, he will be gone again. It will be tough working for the girl he left behind.
What will happen when the guy who broke Macy’s heart, breaks it again. You know he will. Leopards do not change their spots, or do they?

Protecting His Cowgirl by Mary Sue Jackson. How do you walk away from anything you love, especially that someone special? UGH-as Macy and Garrett have discovered, live is so complicated at times. I found this to be a very enduring second chance romance with a lot of patience, love, loss, forgiveness, and drama. Main characters had an undeniable chemistry and I thought this story was good. I love second chances and that’s exactly what you get here. Macy and Garrett had a hard road ahead of them but mostly because Garrett didn’t think he deserved her. She needs better. I hate when men think don’t think they’re enough. But the story wouldn’t have been so good if it wasn’t for their struggles and miscommunication. You can’t help but feel their connection and attraction as much as they try and fight it.

Well-written with strong emotions.
This team of writers has again given the reader another great read. I love when the characters are realistic with human flaws it is so easy then to get lost in the story. This second chance has so much incorporated into it there are misunderstandings, lies and secrets, anger, grief and the sense of betrayal and then you mix in the love too and you have one truly good piece. Garrett and Macy’s story is one that you will want to read over and over again. I am so pleased to have this one in my collection of books. A fastpaced pageturner with a great plot and wonderful characters. Loved the bond between Garret and Macy.

A great second chance romance. I loved Garrett and Macy’s story. These two never stopped loving each other but had to overcome there past to move forward.
So with limited time available while on military leave to help out a childhood friend’s sister, Garrett was not prepared for the feelings that returned for Macy and the rough road ahead of them to their HEA!

This is a cowgirl story that takes you more or less all over the feelings spectrum. It makes you feel bad for the leading character of the story, how troubled youth and non acceptance can make you believe for the unforseeable future. It makes you feel for the other leading charactre for living in a lie without knowing it and as the story evolves it takes you all the way and back again. Overall the storyline and the characters and – well the story itself are quite good and deserves the four stars I am giving it here.

I thought Garrett and Macy’s book was a super read these two were good likable characters, these two were together ten years before but he broke her heart but he is a different guy now when her brother asks him to help her she is not happy to see him and want to leave the past in the past can he convince her he has changed and would never hurt her again?
Protecting His Cowgirl by Mary Sue Jackson is Jackson’s newest Cowboy romance. Garret Grayson was the town’s bad boy when he was in high school. Ever since then he has spent his leave time helping people around town, trying to make up. Macy Joyce is living on her parents’ ranch with her mother and her small son. Things have been going wrong, none of them big things, but all together they are making life tough. Macy’s brother knows Garrett is in town so he calls and asks Garrett to go out to the ranch and see if he can help, despite knowing Garrett and Macy’s past. They both know this is short term, that is has to leave. How can this work out well, for either of them? Only in Heartstring, Wyoming…
Jackson is the master of modern cowboy romances. Once again she has taken a broken man and made him into a hero. And a girl who has loved him since she was a teen, giving him another chance. Her little boy adores him. Once again, the kid steals the show with his antics and responses to Garrett. Even Macy’s mom comes around as she sees the kind of man he has grown into. Protecting His Cowgirl was a powerful read, full of good characters, well-written, and a powerful plot. Characters make or break the book, especially a romance, and Jackson has written characters that the reader will identify with and maybe even pray for. It is a terrific book and I recommend it without reservation.

Duncan knew his sister needed help with the ranch because strange things started happening he asked Garrett to watch out for her. Macy knew the people of Heartsprings talked about her being a single mother. Garrett knew he would take the job of protecting her and her son. Macy was not happy about seeing Garrett and her brother was the reason he was there. She decided she needed to put the past behind them. This is an amazing book, and a great second chance romance. It shows how people can change and how not everything was how it seemed. It was just an all around great book that i have already reread!

A Great Ranch-themed Second Chance Love Story.
A well-written, very entertaining storyline. The characters, Garrett and Macy-May were fun to follow along as they reconnected after ten years. Macy’s six year old son, Trey was written in age appropriate which means reading is character believable. I throughly enjoyed my time spent with this book.
Therefore I’m wholeheartedly recommending this book for your reading enjoyment and satisfaction. Peace.
