JENNY STARLING
In her late twenties, Jenny Starling is an impressive woman. Physically, she stands at 6ft 1inch, and has shoulder-length black hair and blue eyes. Curvaceous and sexy, she’s a modern single woman, living the lifestyle that suits her – that of a travelling cook. Her famous (and now very rich) father, is a ‘celebrity’ cook, divorced from Jenny’s mother. Jenny drives a disreputable cherry-red van, and is happy travelling the country catering events and cooking great food. She is on a one-woman crusade to bring back ‘real’ food. And definitely doesn’t like having to divert her attention from achieving the perfect Dundee cake or creating a new sauce recipe by having to solve a murder. She finds crime very distracting, especially when there is chocolate to temper or pike to poach. Nevertheless, she is very good at reading people, and with a quick and agile brain, becomes very good at unmasking killers. And her always-undaunted sense of humour goes a long way in keeping her sane when all around her people are dropping like flies.

The Country Inn Mystery by Faith Martin is the seventh in the Jenny Starling series. This was the first time I read a book in the Jenny Starling series, but I was able to follow along easily, so it can be read as a stand alone.
I found it to have that old fashioned mystery feeling that reminded me of Agatha christie.

The Protagonist Jenny is clever, well developed and down to earth. There were likeable side characters too.
There are plenty of twists and turns to keep me wanting to find out what will happen next. The book is engaging from start to finish..
I cant wait to read some other books in the series. Highly recommend to mystery fans.
I requested and received an Advanced Reader Copy from Joffe Books and NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Love a Faith Martin cosy mystery and this one was perfect with a cup of tea and a slice of cake. Cracking little whodunnit and highly recommend to mystery lovers.
I’m not a big fan of the traditional cosy mystery set in a small rural village, but the writing and character of Jenny Starling captured my imagination from the first page and took me along on an interesting and enjoyable ride.
Relief chef, Jenny, is working at the Spindlewood Inn in the village of Caulcott Deeping in the Cotswolds. The village is putting on a Regency extravaganza, which includes performances of a local historical event by the amateur dramatic society. And while they may be amateurs, the battle of egos is just as sharp.
The story ambles along with Jenny observing the varied characters who are there for the weekend. It soon becomes apparent that some of these people have other agendas, especially where the main actor, Rachel Norman, is concerned. It’s only a matter of time before she winds up dead, but how she was killed is a baffling mystery in the Agatha Christie tradition.
While the police try to piece it all together, Jenny’s observational skills and ability to connect the sometimes obscure clues ensures she solves the murder with skill and aplomb.
The author’s produced an entertaining and enjoyable read, filled with suspects, motives and red herrings and a liberal sprinkling of humour and wry observation, which lift it above the average cosy mystery.
This is a charming cozy mystery set in an idyllic English village. It stars a travelling cook, Jenny Starling who is a very remarkable woman in looks and her culinary talent. But where ever Jenny goes murder seems to follow! She is always annoyed by this and tries hard to not get involved but she has an uncanny way of being able to read people and a mind for solving mysteries. The synopsis promised a “gripping whodunit full of twists ” and I must say I was surprised by the ending , and never would have guessed the murderer! This is #7 in the series and the first I have read of Faith Martin’s mysteries. It will not be my last!
The Country Inn Mystery is the 7th book in the Jenny Starling series from Faith Martin. Jenny Starling is a statuesque travelling chef who typically upsets the local constabulary with her quick wit and even quicker ability to solve their most recent murder mystery. It’s a fun read. Cheers Lynda L. Lock (Isla Mujeres Mystery series).
Ingenious plot
Traveling cook Jenny Starling fills in for her friend and fellow chef at the Spindlewood Inn featured in Author Faith Martin’s latest whodunit, The Country Inn Mystery. It’s the inn’s ‘Regency Extravaganza’ weekend–filled with actors, fans and fabulous food! As the guests arrive, Chef Jenny soon realizes that the peaceful country-side setting is brimming with scandalous undertones.
Local drama and historical group, The Caulcott Deeping Players, are at the inn to perform a re-enactment of a scandalous nobility affair from years ago that ends in despair and death. Lead actress Rachel Norman is a thespian on a mission to land her break-out role, leaving a trail of broken hearts (and pocket-books). Will a jilted lover bring her down? Or is there something more sinister being planned for this wannabe actress diva?
Colorful characters, a charming setting, and menus filled with delectable treats make this a great summertime whodunit read to sit back and enjoy. This reader is very happy–there are more stories and adventures to be read featuring the delightful Ms. Starling. I can’t wait to see what she’s up to next!
England, murder-investigation, law-enforcement, amateur-sleuth
Impossible for me to do an unbiased review on a Jenny Starling book! Each is excellent and easily stands alone.
Traveling cook Jenny Starling agreed to take over for her friend who is going on a two week vacation. The job is at a lovely Inn in the Cotswolds which is hosting a production by a troupe of amateur thespians. Easy to figure out who the victim will be, but the plot takes some interesting twists and tosses in not a few red herrings. Another fun read!
