The Coppersmith Farmhouse, by Devney Perry, is the first book of her Jamison Valley series set in Prescott, Montana. Gigi (Georgia) Ellers was a young single mother of Rowan (4). She had been all on her own since her Mom passed. Before coming to Prescott, she had been an ER nurse in Spokane. Some years earlier she had met the elderly Ben Coppersmith in the hospital. When she learned that no one was coming for Ben, that the only clothes he had was the hospital gown, and he, like herself, was alone, she made it her business to change all of that. Over the next few years, Gigi and her baby daughter became very close to Ben and when one morning he didn’t wake up he left his love behind for his girls as well as leaving them most of his worldly goods.
Gigi and Rowan relocate to Prescott and a new job for Gigi on the small nursing staff of the local hospital. When they arrive at the farmhouse they had inherited it is far nicer that she had imagined, mainly due to the upkeep and renovation done by Jess Cleary through the last 19 years.
Jess had expected to inherit from Ben and upon meeting Gigi he was a self described ass. Once he realized she wasn’t a money grubbing gold digger he feared it was too late to make things right. Just like Gigi had made it her business to befriend and care for Ben, Jess made it his business to rectify his actions and make up for the things he had said.
Jess is the county sheriff with a great reputation for keeping the peace and solving what crimes occur, which are usually few. But not this spring. This spring there have been break ins and thefts, a mysterious incident where a calf was struck and killed in the middle of a field, there is a meth lab somewhere in the hills, and someone is peddling prescription drugs to teenagers. And Jess is frustrated. These bad guys are good at being bad and even though he is sure his childhood friend Wes Drummond is very much involved he has no proof.
As the months go by, Jess is able to work his way into Gigi’s heart as well as little Rowan’s. He continually calls them the same thing Ben had, my girls. When things happen to put Jess’s girls in the crosshairs of the bad guys there is no stopping Jess or his deputies from bringing them safely home.
This is an excellent book, well written with a convoluted plot that will take the reader on quite a ride. The characters are well defined and the reader will cheer on the good guys and boo the bad ones. I had not heard of this author before this book but I will be looking for her now! I very much enjoyed this book and I do recommend it!
I grabbed this on audio when the book was free for a limited time and I LOVED IT! I loved it so much I’ve grabbed the rest of the series on audio too. This book has it all, angst, feels, drama, humour, suspense, mystery and most important of all a dreamy hot AF police chief!
Right from the start we have an instant enemies situation… I laughed hard when GiGi was booked for running on the wrong side of the road! Once this pair got over their animosity towards each other the attraction was instant. I did sometimes think that GiGi was just too good to be true.. Is anybody actually THAT nice.
Great storyline and development of both plot and characters. Jess and GiGi’s story is one dreams are made of. A great small town romance with an awesome community spirit!
Nice story! Nice characters! Too much sex and bad language!
Good Premise, Disappointing Plot
I liked the idea of Gigi starting a new life in a beautiful rural setting. Dealing with an inhospitable, though decidedly handsome sheriff was a plus. As it turned out, Jess was too moody and overbearing for my tastes. He kept treating Gigi like a doormat. Also, the plot was disappointing. Gigi and Jess resolved their conflict quickly, and then the town mystery took center stage. Jess and Gigi’s relationship became an accessory to an uninteresting investigation that had a predictable solution. Still, I think there was enough in this first book to try the next in the series.
I liked the story-line in general and the characters were likeable, but I found the repeated use of the “F” bomb to be offensive. Just call me old fashioned, I guess, but I don’t think vulgarity is necessary to get a point across.
Sometimes the characters annoyed me, but they both grew through the course of the story
Good storyline
Loved, LOVED, LOVED this book. Can’t wait to read more of her books.
ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS BOOK! Will definitely re-read it!!!
Sweet story. The characters were sometimes a little difficult to like but he story was very well written and enjoyable.
Fantastic story! I give it 5+ stars!
I’ve actually thought quite a bit about how I would review this book. I got a deal on it and was looking to read something a little different than I normally do, so I tried to limit that influence on my reivew.
Pros: Great characters
Even with cons, I couldn’t quit reading and flew through the book quickly.
Use of 1st person storytelling
Sex scenes were appropriate, R rated not XXX which I appreicated
Cons: overuse of F*@%, effing and hot/hotness Not a big fan of expletives in my
books but I understand can be used correctly depending on the character or
situation. There are NO other cuss words. Maybe for Jess but for Georgia, a
nurse and mother of a 4 yr old, the only word choice for her is effing.
The hospital. I’m from a rural area and we only have one hospital in our county.
There is no way…none…in modern healthcare that a hospital works on a staff
of 3 docs & 4 nurses. I don’t understand the need to emphasize how few people
worked there. I think the general concepts that the staff covered multiple job
functions would have been sufficient. The level of “trauma” they handled there
was not accurate. I understand that it is somewhat critical to the story line, but
if the author would not have had clearly stated the small staff, this would have
been somewhat more believable.
Overall, I liked the characters and adjusting for the annoyances, enjoyed the book. Three days after finishing, I’m not sure if I will continue the series.
Found couldn’t wait to turn pages.
Love! Love! Love
Romance novels often require the reader to suspend disbelief when characters fall in love at first sight. In this case it was beyond belief. She sheriff was a complete jerk insisting that the could tell Gigi what to do because he was ” taking care of his girls ” as instructed. The sex scenes were overdone and added nothing to the story. I won’t be reading more books in the series.
I enjoyed this book but it was drawn out.
Jesse was an verbally abusive bully, Gigi was a smart mouth doormat. No thanks.
The H is a bit bossy, but it works in this story. Ended up loving both characters and enjoyed their romance tinged with a bit of suspense and mystery.
LOVED this story!
I have read other series by this author and really enjoyed them, but the male lead in this book is an asshat, and the female lead just keeps taking it, and him back. No thanks!
