A standalone second chance romance by #1 New York Times Bestselling Author Rachel Van Dyken. You know the universe is trying to tell you something when you get struck by lightning, but only after getting hit on by the elderly, almost getting run over by a semi, and running into the one who got away. Why do they say it like that anyway?Like I accidentally lost her when she was the one that got in … the one that got in the car with my best friend and left me.
The day after I proposed.
We were eighteen.
I wanted forever.
She didn’t.
It’s been ten years.
I tried to move on, tried to get married, had that same wedding crashed by my now best friend who says the only way for me to stop pissing off the universe, is to gain closure with the one woman I can’t forget.
So I do it.
I embark on a journey down memory lane that not only lands me in prison but on the receiving end of a fist fight in front of the entire town, this naturally happens after drunken pool sex, climbing the same girl’s window, and getting threatened at gunpoint by her father.
To say the universe is trying to tell me something anything, is a giant understatement.
I just hope I survive the message.
And then, I hope I survive her—again.

Yet another cute and fun book in the Consequence series by Rachel Van Dyken. This is a series I go to when I want something light and fun. Rachel’s writing is always clean but full of spunk. Jason and Maddy’s story had a good little bit of drama that I enjoyed. This second chance romance feels like it is rooted in the type of real-life decision an eighteen-year-old cold make instead of them being dragged apart by some outside force. I liked that it felt based on reality.
‘Everything was the same. And yet. Everything had changed.’
If you are a big fan of the over the top humor that Max has brought to the series then you will be delighted this book is much like the rest of the series full of his hilarity and antics. Overall this was a quick easy read heavy on the humor, romance and even a good bit of heat. Grab it today for a great spring read.
Ahhh, Jason!!! I have been waiting for you! In true Consequence fashion, The Consequence of Rejection is a book that will have you laughing out loud. I feel like it is a must to laugh whenever this gang gets together! I wish I could spend a day with them – can you even imagine what that would be like?!
This book was hilarious and built on the rest of the series I’m so happy poor Jason found his HEA! I want more of these characters! I love Milo, Colt, Max, Becca, Reid, Jordan, Jason, and now Maddy, there had to be more this can’t be the end, right? Please!?

We return to another instalment of The Consequence series by Rachel Van Dyken and yes it’s another one that’s going to have you rolling about the floor in gut wrenching laughter.
This book is Jason’s story and it’s a second chance love story that’s a rollercoaster of emotions with a dash of turbulence thrown in. Jason had his heart broken once before by Maddy and so when she quietly returns to town, he just wants to retreat into himself again. Max, Colton, Reid and the rest of the gang however don’t think this is a good idea and need to get him back on track, so they decide to roll forward with a plan of action. Jason’s not so sure it’s in his best interests but there’s no denying that the chemistry between him and Maddy still sizzles to burning point.
I really can’t get enough of the humorous banter that Rachel Van Dyken has put into this series and it’s no wonder she is one of my go to authors for a guaranteed fabulous read. It doesn’t come without all the other emotions though and some of the situations these characters have endured would bring a tear to a glass eye. Congratulations on yet another entertaining and extremely pleasing read.
Please note that even though the books in this series are all standalone, I would advise reading in order so you have a feel for all the characters who appear in each other’s books.

Lee’Anne –
This is the first book in this series I’ve read, though I’ve read plenty of Rachel Van Dyken’s other books and this one was definitely the funniest – it’s hilarious. It is able to be read as a standalone but with all the other characters from the first books talked about so much, I’m excited to go back and check those out too.
Jason is pretty much cursed with bad luck – from being struck with lightning to literally having the door ripped off his truck. When it comes to his life, if it weren’t for bad luck he’d have none at all. His train of bad luck really began when he proposed to the love of his life, Maddy, their senior year of high school and she rejected him and left town. Now, ten years later she’s returned, and Jason’s friends are determined to get him closure. His group of hilarious friends set out to recreate the fun Maddy and he used to have in high school so that they could figure out they weren’t compatible and move on – only the exact opposite begins to happen and things just get steamy.
I was pretty salty at Maddy in the beginning of this book with the way she left Jason, but I have to give props to the writing and the way the story rounds out with you loving all the characters. Jason and Maddy are adorable together and though full of hardships, their love story is so cute! My absolute favorite part of this book was the entertainment – it had me cracking up from start to finish. Highly recommend!

I’ve been waiting for Jason’s book ever since readers were introduced to him in Milo and Colton’s story; this is where readers were privy to Jason’s endless trail of bad luck, leaving him emasculated, violated, and turned off by the female crazies who seem to always veer in his direction. And, as each of his friends has found his other half, Jason’s been side-lined, watching from the bench as love finds them while all he feels is rejection and heartache.
Maddy Summers was Jason’s high school sweetheart; he wanted to give her everything, but all she gave him was a broken heart, so when she returns to their hometown, there are unresolved feelings and questions that force them to go back 10 years ago when Maddy left town and took Jason’s heart with her. There are consequences to both of their actions – the ones in the present as well as the ones from when they were a couple, and now that it looks like they will be in each other’s space for the foreseeable future, they need to at least come to a truce and learn how to be around one another, especially when it’s clear that their feelings never dissipated regardless of the decade they’ve been apart.
I love second chance romances; the fact that the hero and heroine already have history together definitely makes their reunion more intriguing, and then when you add in Max’s disastrous plan and Jason’s last ditch effort to stop ticking off the universe, it’s one heck of a hilarious, chaotic romantic comedy that finally gives Jason his shot at forever.
There are so many laugh out loud moments in The Consequence of Rejection that I couldn’t stop giggling, which makes sense because Jason’s new bff, Max, is hell bent on helping Jason by any means necessary, and of course, Max calls in Colt and Reid as reinforcement, even though Jason will probably need saving from them more so than from Maddy.
I do have to admit, though, that I feel like Max’s hijinks and big personality, at times, overshadowed Jason and Maddy’s story. Max is definitely an in-your-face kind of guy and he just so happens to be Jason’s self-proclaimed best friend; Max’s role in reuniting his bestie with his lost love is a huge part of the story line, but as much as I adore Max at the center of everything, I really wanted Jason and Maddy to be the focus throughout the entire story, and there were parts that put them in the background, reveling more so in Max’s over-the-top antics than anything else.
Overall, I loved being back in Rachel Van Dyken’s quirky and unique world; it’s good to know that even though Max, Colt, and Reid have found the one for them that they still know how to raise a little hell and cause quite a bit of mayhem regardless of the fact that they are in love. The comedic shtick is strong with these boys, so there’s never a dull moment when they’re all together, which is both a blessing and a curse for the women who put up with them!
4 Poison Apples (The Fairest of All Book Reviews)
I haven’t read the other books in this series, but I plan to now that I have read the consequence of rejection. I was in stitches laughing my butt of with everything that would happen to Jason. Granted, it shouldn’t have been that funny with the stuff that was happening to him. I mean, I felt bad for him that he had nothing but bad luck on his side.
But due to him having so much bad luck, it was just a funny book. The characters were definitely lovable, all of them. I love books that interconnect all their characters because even though you might have already read their story, they still pop up in the other series of books. It’s always fun to read more of them even if they’re just tiny snippets.
I loved how Max went out of his way to help Jason get the girl back. He was such a fun person to read in this book, his quotes were cute too.
I am definitely coming back and starting this series because these characters are definitely a bunch you don’t want to miss out on. If I was engrossed with Jason and Maddy’s story then I’m sure I’ll be just as attached to the rest of the crew once I get my hands on the rest of the books.
Definitely one heck of a book to read. It will keep you in happy spirits and laughing throughout the chapters.

The Consequence of Rejection by Rachel Van Dyken is the fourth book in her Consequence series. A second-chance romance story that is a funny and romantic read and is also perfectly angst-ridden. Told in dual POV with the appearance of characters from previous books in this series.
Jason never got over the fact that his high school sweetheart, one-and-only, woman he wanted forever with left him the day after he asked her to marry him. NOT ONLY LEFT HIM, but ran out of town with his supposed best friend… Now that Maddie is back he has to somehow reign in all the emotions that are ticking over and figure out how to stop the Universe being so mad at him. Between old lady Ethel, the door of his truck being ripped off, and being struck by lightning it’s only a matter of time before the Universe puts an end to him. Unfortunately for Jason, his NOT best-friend Max is determined as only Max can be to set things right with the Universe.
Maddie hated having to move back home but the situation necessitated it. Working as a waitress and having to wait on her ex-fiancé and love of her life while he is out to dinner with a much older woman, weird and depressing. Finding out how badly she hurt him, sad and yet hopeful. Her fear caused her to run all those years ago but she isn’t going to be afraid anymore. Unless it is lightning because with Jason’s luck, it could strike twice.
Hilarious and emotional at just the right balance. Well-paced and well-written (as always) I absolutely adored this story. Told in dual POV, complete story with HEA. Enjoy!
I swear I have been living under a rock! How have I not read this series? You can bet your ass I will be putting the rest of this series on the top of my TBR list!
Oh my gawd! This book is the bomb! It’s funny, it’s smexy it’s all things good in the world!
This is the story of Jason and Maddy, but it’s really a huge reunion of all the characters! This story can be read as a stand alone, I mean I have never read the other books so I can honestly say I loved this story. However, and this is a tiny however, I think it would be in the readers best interest to start at the beginning of the series to get the full potential of this book.
The dialogue is hysterically funny, smart and fast paced! I would love to live in Rachel’s mind as she is writing! (But in a healthy, educational way! I swear!)
The angst is just the right amount and you can feel it in your heart and your bones!
The chemistry between Maddy and Jason is off the charts and it hasn’t faded even though years had passed between them. I mean who doesn’t love a second chance story? I know I do!
Do yourself a favor! Read this book, and if you really to be a smart cookie, read the whole Consequences series!
Thank you for your words and letting us into your world of stories Rachel! I bow down to your wicked sense of humor, your brilliance and your overall awesomeness!
I’m slightly (and by slightly I mean slightly fangirl crazy) addicted to Rachel Van Dyken’s books and The Consequence of Rejection was exactly what I needed.
Firstly, we get more Max Emory shenanigans. And comparing Max to Barney Stintson (ironically I’ve been rewatching HIMYM) and Smit but even worse, is so freaking accurate I can’t even. I’m not sure there’s a RVD fan that can not love Max, anything he does or says is HILARIOUS. And I really really needed the giggles that this book gave me.
Then there’s Jason, for one hello who doesn’t love a romance book with a sexy cop? But mostly, those that have been reading this series will agree that we’re incredibly invested in these guys all getting their HEA. Following this beautiful second chance love story with Jason and Maggie, was stunning and magical.
For a fun, sexy, hilarious, light romantic comedy, snap up The Consequence of Revenge and prepare to laugh up a six pack! Though I would majorly recommend reading the others in the series first, trust me you won’t regret it. The banter, the mischief Max and Milo cause, the sass of the heroines and of course accident prone Jason, makes this a thoroughly enjoyable book and series that will hook you from the first page and keep you both swooning and giggling until the end.
This is the first story in this series that I have read. It was enjoyable and really funny, I just found it a bit too over the top silly. The humor and the childish ways of some of the secondary characters (Max I am looking at you) became annoying at about 50%. It was just too much for me. I loved the second chance story and the main characters. I also loved the way the story was written and flowed. I have just discovered this author and will continue to read more from her, I am just not so sure with this series.
A wacky and wonderful romantic comedy that’ll have you laughing so hard you won’t be able to breathe…
My brain in is fried. In a good way. Much like a sunny side up egg…make that a whole box of sunny side up eggs. Much like all other RVD books I automatically said yeas to the review option. As always it was a no brainer. In fact, when it comes to her books I one-click with my eyes closed. It’s an instinct for me. She’s one of those authors I can count on to make me laugh out loud like a freaking crazy hyena and yet still manages to make my heart hurt. break and swoon itself back whole. I’m sorry if most of this doesn’t make sense, it’s a side effect of spending a most of my day with my head buried in between the gorgeous pages of this book. In this case it was actually my face buried in my kindle.
Anyway… The plot for The Consequence of Rejection (TCOR) is so wild and freaking crazy that it’s just naturally unpredictable. As the saying goes, there is logic behind Ms. Van Dyken’s extraordinary madness and there is also a deep and rather heart-wrenching story. The whole reason for the story is actually really heart-breaking and sad. Saying that it is wilder than an Adam Sandler, Jonah Hill and Will Ferrell co-lab. It is still sweet and there are moments that just make your heart skip a beat, and not because you’re laughing so much that you can’t breathe, but because the moment is filled with so much sweetness and so romantic that your hand is left quite literally holding your heart in it’s place. I say romance because…well, it is romance, just RVD kind of romance. Where you feel it touching you but at the same time there’s a humour to it that doesn’t quite allow you to see just how much the moment affects to you until somewhere down the line it all creeps up on you and slaps you upside the head. I love that. For me it makes the story fell fresh and gives it a real buoyant pep that carries you through every single step in the characters journey.
Part of the magic of this book is most definitely without the shadow of the doubt the characters. If you loved the Wingmen Inc. series, you will die for the cast in TCOR. In my opinion the banter and the craziness are amped up to a whole new brilliant level. Staring with leading duo,Jason and Maddy, and going all the way to the secondary characters or what I like to call Jason’s troop of mad monkeys—Max, Colt and Reid. Yes, they are at times too much to get your head around and you almost feel like you need to cage them because they are just too freaking wild. BUT, they bring something so fresh to the story. It’s not just their shenanigans that make you love them, but it’s also their bond with Jason. Their friendship is so deep and completely without boundaries that despite all the funny business they have this emotional pull over the story. There are times where you just know that they’re landing Jason in the poop. Actually most of the time. But, it’s that that endears him to not just the reader but also to Maddy. I felt that although Jason did follow a lot of their misfortunate advice, that actually he needed all those bumps and divots on his road to closure. It made him see things somewhat differently and from a different perspective. Even if at times I wanted to lob him one for doing the wrong thing at the wrong time, just like I wanted to backhand Maddy for not seeing that all his little (big) faux pas came from a good place…straight from his heart.
All in all, I just adored The Consequence of Rejection. It wast brilliantly fast paced and it did exactly what a rm-com should do—make you forget about all the crap going on around you. It made me laugh and it made me smile like a lunatic. I could not stop smiling the whole way through. It just does everything that this series has done from the off. It transports you completely away from reality with its grand gestures and wacky personalities and plot twists. It’s unpredictable and it is guaranteed to make you want to completely let go and just lose yourself to good, crazy and completely beautiful romance.

ARC kindly received in exchange for an honest review.
Holy wow. What an intense ride that was. This was my first in the Consequences series, but I definitely want to go back and read all the others.
Right from the start I was hooked. I literally read this in a couple of hours. The level of intensity in this book was so high. I just had to know what was going to happen. Even though there were tiny little parts where I think I would’ve picked up on which characters belonged where, had I read the previous books first, I had no trouble understanding the storyline of this one.
I’m not entirely sure that I really liked either Maddy or Jason, and Max just plain drove me nuts half the time, but this story was so unputdownable it isn’t funny. I was determined to see what happened and ride the highs and lows. It was like a constant state of angst.
I felt the ending was a little rushed, I would’ve liked a bit more closure, but it was all rounded out quite well otherwise.
I did enjoy this and would recommend.
This is the fourth book in the Consequence series. You can read this as a stand alone. But, you will be missing out on three other hilarious reads. Plus you would miss all the other “Maxisms” and all the shenanigans! Trust me, you don’t want to miss those.
This si a great second chance with the one that ran away.
I’ve loved Jason from the start. He wasn’t the brightest in the first book with the whole Jayne situation. I really felt for him because of the trickery that witch pulled. Plus all his injuries.
Thank God for Max! *looks around for lighting to strike* (It does, so be very careful). Okay, I’m good.
You gotta love Max’s meddling ways.
You will get a ton of laughs out of this series.
Maddy is great too. Even if she did run. I understand her reasons. They were young and didn’t have a plan.
Is it bad that I want a copy of “Max Emory’s Guide to Dating and Other Important Life Lessons”?
I want to see the chart! You’ll understand when you read this!
I love this series!

Poor Jason. The world is against him some way or another; his best friends don’t help matters; and his first love/ former fiancee shows back up 10 years after running away with their friend. This is a stand alone, but to truly enjoy the MAXisms you should read the first 3 books. Don’t leave poor Jason behind
The Consequence of Rejection is the fourth book in the Consequence series by the ever-talented, Rachel Van Dyken. I have been following the series from the beginning and have love for all the characters but I still have my favorite man. That man is Max Emory. He kills me. It just wants his best friend Jason to be happy. To move on from the rejection that broke him.
Ten years. Ten years since Maddy ran away from him. Them. She was his forever until she left town with one of his best friends they day after he proposed. He was crushed. In the years they were together, he never pictured a life without her. Sure, years later he would almost marry someone else but he dodged that bullet on his wedding day. Thank God. Now…Maddy was back living across the street from him. He hated what she had done to him. He also hated that he still loved her.
Max might be crazy but he is brilliant. He had a plan. Operation Closure. That is what Jason and Maddy needed to move on. To do this they would have to spend time together. Get it all out on the table. The good. The bad. And the ugly. No matter what so they could move on from their past. It was the only way to get Jason to his happy. And that is what Max wants for him. If Jason continued the way he was, he would be a lonely cop with twenty cats and no pussy.
Will Operation Closure bring Jason and Maddy back together or a friendship? Or will it make Maddy run again?
I have been waiting for Jason’s story since the day of his wedding and the wait was so fucking worth it. I just love his accident prone ass. A sexy cop with a romantic side? Gimme, gimme. Plus, he has the best of friends. I loved seeing them all together again. And Maddy…I feel for her. She is a strong character who made her mistakes but doesn’t have regrets. Together, they are fire. She is the flame that he needs.
Overall…I loved it all. The story. The laughs. The friendships. The love. The past. The present. I laughed hard. Cried a little. Felt the chemistry. Oh yeah…you do not need to read the previous books but I highly recommend it. You will won’t to know the rest of the gang better.
P.S. Rachel, if you put out a 365-day calendar of Max’s Guide for Dating and Other Life Lessons I would be the first one to buy it.
Quotes:
“Ah, come here, little one. Let Uncle Max tell you a story.”
“Say ‘Uncle Max’ again, and I’m shanking you,” Jason threatened from the ground.
“Come on, where’s your sense of adventure?”
“Live dangerously, Jason.”
Oh my goodness! I had read this book before and didn’t know it was the last in a series. It was still just as hilarious and amazing the second time around and even better when I knew all the other characters.
This story was a good blend of heartache and hilarity. 10 years after he proposed at their high school graduation, Jason is in the same town but now a police officer. Maddy comes back and hilarity as well as 10 years worth of life come spiraling down at these two characters.
Jason is the most accident prone person I’ve ever met and pairing him with Max and then sending the wives away seems like cruel and hilarious punishment. This book was great on it’s own, but even better having read the other characters’ stories
Love this series I literally laugh out loud
An unlucky guy with a heart of gold. The typical good boy, handsome, educated and passionate, who even after ten years could not forget his first and only love. Jason is a passionate character and the whole soul of the book. Although Max’s one-liners added a comedic tone very well inserted in the work.
Fourth book of the series Consequence, here as already mentioned above, we have the story of Jason, the only bachelor of a group of four friends. It is a situation that these same solicitous friends want to change. Finding the right woman and making him carry on with his life becomes the mission of these friends, led by Max and his lack of notion and tact.
But such a task will not be easy. Jason’s heart belongs to Maddy, his teenage girlfriend and the woman he has never been able to overcome. He never left the town where he always lived, and now an adult and a cop, he lives one day at a time. What he did not count on was Maddy’s return after so many years. Staying face-to-face with the woman who left after a marriage proposal and many love promises will not be easy. Jason will again experience all the pain that he has suffocated.
Maddy broke the heart of the man she loved and still loves. Her sudden departure was due to several reasons, but the dreams she had for herself did not come true as she would have liked. Back in the city, she has to balance the fact that she resents not having conquered a better future and being close to the man who she hurt in the past.
Taking advantage of an idea of Max, who thinks that both need a closure to move on, Marcus and Maddy embark on a journey redoing important moments of their lives, moments that will arouse more uncertainty and bring up dormant feelings. Jason still loves Maddy. But will he be able to forgive everything that has happened? Maddy fled without explanation. What secrets does she hide, and will these secrets be understood by Jason?
I never laughed so hard reading a book. Each chapter begins with an excerpt from the book written by Max, taking Jason as a very present character. I laughed with some of this advice. Poor Jason’s unfortunate fame is no exaggeration. In one scene he knocks down coffee in his uniform, his car door is ripped off by a bus, he falls from his chair, burns his hand in a new coffee cup, a torrential rain falls on him, breaks his toe kicking the tire of the car and is struck by lightning. If there is a person with more misfortune I do not know.
Jason is sweet. The typical romances good guy. The reader suffers with him. Maddy was written to be the contradiction in all this tenderness. But I do not accept the motives that made her leave. I thought she should chase after Jason for a change, and she would learn to appreciate his love. Once again, after everything he has gone through, he still has to go after her. The male protagonists being better developed and more passionate is becoming a routine. Few girls have been captivating me lately.
Max is that annoying friend you almost always want to squeal. The best tirades and pranks, the voice of wisdom in important moments comes precisely from him.
I liked the book, I liked the plot, second chances in love are always guarantees of good reading. For those who like novels with a touch of comedy this is the ideal book.
Poor Jason, I could have cried for Jason.
The woman he loved and wanted to start a family with rejected him after his proposal and left town with his best friend.
10 years later they meet up when she returns to town, I have to say I did not like her actions towards Jason. She acted like he did something wrong and not herself. You do find out why she did what she did and it’s understandable but still hurt him nonetheless.
His friends are a hilarious great bunch of guys, it did annoy me they try to get him back to Maddy because I felt with what she did to him she didn’t deserve him but I felt it was done out of love. They wanted to help him find closure and move on.
I now have to go and read the other boy’s stories especially Max because it was adorable.
