Hmm… Where to start? Maybe with The Companion probably being my favorite book in Chelsea Hale’s sweet Sundaes For Breakfast Romance series. I absolutely loved the cruise ship setting! Aboard cruise ship stories used to be pretty common in the era of black & white movies but it’s not seen quite as often in fiction books so I enjoy it immensely when I run across it.
But, yeah, there’s a but. As much as I liked the story the characters made me so mad. For more than half the book Derek is a total jerk. In defending herself Mandy tells him way more personal details than a girl should tell a stranger. And then, it was like they both were deliberately making stupidly false assumptions and intentionally sabotaging their romance. And here comes the second but. But, I really liked them and was totally rooting for them to get together in the end. And, I totally adored Alice, who made the perfect grandma.
The audiobook of The Companion was a fun listen and did justice to Chelsea Hale’s Hallmark-esque tale. The production was fine and the narrator was very good. If audiobooks and sweet Christian romance are your thing you should check out all of the books in the Sundaes For Breakfast series.
(I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)
This delightful story surprised me. I was skeptical about the premise, the romance was dreamy and uplifting. It wasn’t too cheesy or too obsessed with the idea of a high life romance. Mandy and Derek Were fun and a believable complement for one another.
The narrator did an excellent job of bringing these characters to life!
“The Companion” by Chelsea Hale
This is Book 3 in the Sundaes for Breakfast romance Series and my first story in this series. I now need to read the other stories. I was gifted the audio copy of this story via Audibles. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time within this clean sweet contemporary romance. I honestly loved the story, and the narration, too. The story moved right along and I never did get antsy while I spent time with this offering. I hope you will like it as much as I did. Happy Reading !!
A clean, sweet read. I loved the storyline, lady hires out as a companion to elderly people who want to cruise but not by themselves. She finds out what excursions they want to do and then sets everything up for them and then esxorts them to the events, etc. She does this partly because her Grandma passed away before they could go on their trip together. She gets especially close to one companion and her grandson who only came along because he was sure his grandmother was getting swindled. She gets home to see the importance of spending time with his grandmother while he can. So much more to this story, it was just a feel good read.
I received a free copy of this book and this is my honest, unbiased review.
A wonderful well written and beautifully narrated sweet romance story. This engaging storyline had me interested with a smooth flowing storyline that is fun, magical, has some distrust, suspicion, conflict and romance. The characters are realistic, and have great chemistry in a good clean story. The narrator really enhanced the story with a wonderful fun telling.
Overall Rating: 4.5 stars
Story Rating: 4 stars
Narrator-Staci Glemboski: 5 stars
What I liked or observed:
• Derek was sure Mandy had nefarious purposes towards his grandmother, Alice. He viewed everything Mandi did on the ship through this filter.
• Mandy was very kind and loved other people. A very likeable character.
• Derek was such a sad, misguided person. His life revolved around his work. He was a very difficult person to get along with. He had such a stilted view of life.
• This was a miscommunication/assumptions type of romance. I liked the story, but this type of conflict between characters was not my favorite type, because it was very predictable.
• There was a smooth, coherent flow to this book. This author was a great writer and I will be reading more books by her.
• This was a clean read and I appreciated that.
• The narrator, Staci Glemboski, did an excellent job in differentiating the various characters’ voices and made the story come to life. She had a pleasant voice to listen to and I will be looking forward to listening to more books narrated by her.
At my request, I was given a free copy of this audiobook from the author. I have voluntarily left my review and my opinions were my own.
When busy Grandson doesn’t have time for Grandma, she decides to hire a female companion to cruise with her. Grandson freaks out and decides Grandma is being taken advantage of – and he decides he has to go, too. Of course Grandma is delighted that he is finally going to take some time off – sort of. It is a very engaging story and all of the people involved find that this is just what they needed!
