P. T. Deutermann’s previous novels of the US Navy in World War II – Pacific Glory, Ghosts of Bungo Suido, and Sentinels of Fire – have been acclaimed by reviewers and readers for their powerful drama and authentic detail. In The Commodore, the Navy in 1942-1943 is fighting a losing battle against Japan for control of the Solomon Islands. Vice Admiral William “Bull” Halsey is tasked to change the … Halsey is tasked to change the course of the war. Halsey, a maverick, goes on the offensive and appoints a host of new destroyer commanders, including a wild-card named Harmon Wolf. An American Indian from a Minnesota reservation, Wolf has never fit in with the traditional Navy officer corps. But under Halsey, Wolf’s aggressive tactics and gambling nature bring immediate results, and he is swiftly promoted to Commodore of an entire destroyer squadron.
What happens next will change Wolf’s life, career, and the fate of his ships forever. An epic story of courage, disaster, survival, and triumph that culminates in the pivotal battle of Vela Gulf, The Commodore is a masterful novel of an unlikely military hero.

What WEB Griffin did for the Marines, Deutermann does for the Navy. My father participated in the war in the Pacific on board a battleship and a cruiser. This book covers a dark period in the war, when we were on the defensive. Good characters and lots of action. Recommended.
Great story of a true hero of the Greatest Generation
wow
Great for the Tincan swabbies. Great read
I am a Navy veteran. This is realistic about fog of war.
Great Read
I’ve known Pete Deutermann since we were both Naval officers (I was the engineer overseeing the overhaul of his DDG command). His books, Navy and others, are realistic, with well developed characters and are a joy to read. My favorite is Trainman but you can’t miss with any of his novels.
If you want to feel what it is like to be on a Destroyer this is a good start!
Very good action adventure.
Good action novel of surface sea action during WW II.
This is a great book. More please!!
very realistic, some history knowledge Tin can sailor myself
Moves very well and holds your interest
Very good WWII Storyline. Very accurate description of destroyers.
The story of a destroyer captain in 1942-43 Solomon Islands. Harmon Wolf is a very aggressive Minnesotan who is swiftly promoted to Commodore. It is a realistic view of the campaign.
This is a good fast read. It gives a realistic, intense picture of the life/death of navy destroyers in the pacific during the early stages of the naval war. Iron bound sound was aptly named. But, it is clear the marines on Guadalcanal would have been much worse off, if that was possible, without the navy’s bravery and losses.
Great book, and highly recommend his other WWII books.
One of the greats regarding World War II naval action, focusing on destroyer operations in the Pacific. Great characters and thrilling action for anyone interested in realistic military fiction from highly credible authors. Deutermann is a master at this specialized genre. Recommended!
I really enjoyed this book. The author gets into the difficulties of being a Native American navy officer in WW 2, without this fact overwhelming the story. Good book!!
Rare descriptions of ww2 destroyer combat
