Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, this novel about a resilient and courageous woman has become a Broadway show and a cultural phenomenon. A PBS Great American Read Top 100 Pick Celie has grown up poor in rural Georgia, despised by the society around her and abused by her own family. She strives to protect her sister, Nettie, from a similar fate, and while Nettie escapes to … and while Nettie escapes to a new life as a missionary in Africa, Celie is left behind without her best friend and confidante, married off to an older suitor, and sentenced to a life alone with a harsh and brutal husband.
In an attempt to transcend a life that often seems too much to bear, Celie begins writing letters directly to God. The letters, spanning twenty years, record a journey of self-discovery and empowerment guided by the light of a few strong women. She meets Shug Avery, her husband’s mistress and a jazz singer with a zest for life, and her stepson’s wife, Sophia, who challenges her to fight for independence. And though the many letters from Celie’s sister are hidden by her husband, Nettie’s unwavering support will prove to be the most breathtaking of all.

Great read and the characters are truly amazing.
Amazing story of a woman who was beaten and abused who comes out stronger for all she went through. Highly recommend.
Great book
I loved the audio book of this. Alice Walker did an amazing job pulling us back in time. My heart hurt for these women. The sh*t they were forced to go through. I can’t even imagine. Celie was so strong willed. It might now seem like it to some but she would not be broken! She rises above everything she grew up thinking she knew. So much pride for …
Epistolary novel from the point of view of a abused girl into womanhood.
One of the best books I’ve ever read.
Read this over 25 years ago. Still remember it . Loved It!!!
True classic, great read!
This is the only novel that I have ever read cover to cover in a single day. Years ago, I was travelling from Colorado to Maine, via Massachusetts, for a vacation. I started to read as my plane took off from Denver and I didn’t put it down the entire trip, even eschewing the gorgeous scenery outside the window of my train from Boston up the coast. …
I enjoyed it showed how selfish and self righteous some of the characters were and they didnt enjoy a good life because of their choices.
Love the book as well as the movie. I come from an era where some parts were true.
A heavy read, but a beautiful story.
