Introducing Wyoming’s Sheriff Walt Longmire in this riveting first Longmire novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Land of WolvesFans of Ace Atkins, Nevada Barr and Robert B. Parker will love this outstanding first novel, in which New York Times bestselling author Craig Johnson introduces Sheriff Walt Longmire of Wyoming’s Absaroka County. Johnson draws on his deep attachment to the … Johnson draws on his deep attachment to the American West to produce a literary mystery of stunning authenticity, and full of memorable characters. After twenty-five years as sheriff of Absaroka County, Walt Longmire’s hopes of finishing out his tenure in peace are dashed when Cody Pritchard is found dead near the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. Two years earlier, Cody has been one of four high school boys given suspended sentences for raping a local Cheyenne girl. Somebody, it would seem, is seeking vengeance, and Longmire might be the only thing standing between the three remaining boys and a Sharps .45-70 rifle.
With lifelong friend Henry Standing Bear, Deputy Victoria Moretti, and a cast of characters both tragic and humorous enough to fill in the vast emptiness of the high plains, Walt Longmire attempts to see that revenge, a dish best served cold, is never served at all.

I love Robert Parker and Spenser, but I think Longmire tops them. This is a gritty, realistic book, and you can’t help but read late into the night once you get started.
Great book, great writer, love all of his books!
Great story except for a couple of things. The Cheyenne ghosts and the rescue in the snow are a bit of a stretch too far. And the ending is horrible. Otherwise it was a great book. I hope the rest of the series is more believable.
Craig Johnson develops his characters well and leaves guessing while following the plot until the end. A good read.
I watched the Netflix series and found this book brought the characters alive and very funny
Wonderful character development! I am new to the series (reading book 5 now)… In love with all the characters! Like coming home to family.
I love Longmire! and enjoyed this book as much as the TV series.
Wow! Very unpredictable and definitely an unexpected ending !
Watch the series on Netflix
loved the tv show and loved the book
I love the Walt Longmire mysteries. They are just good writing. Stories are rich, detailed, and nuanced. Mysteries unfold with a slow burn, offering just enough information at each turn of the page that allows the reader to work the case, the same time Walt does. Walt is everything the modern Western should epitomize. Tough without being cliche or macho, intelligent without being inaccessible, and beholden to the old codes, honor, and justice.
Craig Johnson always writes a fascinating narrative. One of my favorite authors.
Surely many would like this genre – the modern cowboy. I found the dinile. Jus
This is a tremendous book which was only the beginning of a wonderful series. I highly recommend it to anyone especially anyone who believes in values.
Gritty and authentic
makes you want more
Boring! Not even close to the TV series…
Great read for fans of the TV show. Plodding at times, but worth working through.
Even better than the TV series
So well written.
