Introducing Wyoming’s Sheriff Walt Longmire in this riveting first Longmire novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Land of WolvesFans of Ace Atkins, Nevada Barr and Robert B. Parker will love this outstanding first novel, in which New York Times bestselling author Craig Johnson introduces Sheriff Walt Longmire of Wyoming’s Absaroka County. Johnson draws on his deep attachment to the … Johnson draws on his deep attachment to the American West to produce a literary mystery of stunning authenticity, and full of memorable characters. After twenty-five years as sheriff of Absaroka County, Walt Longmire’s hopes of finishing out his tenure in peace are dashed when Cody Pritchard is found dead near the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. Two years earlier, Cody has been one of four high school boys given suspended sentences for raping a local Cheyenne girl. Somebody, it would seem, is seeking vengeance, and Longmire might be the only thing standing between the three remaining boys and a Sharps .45-70 rifle.
With lifelong friend Henry Standing Bear, Deputy Victoria Moretti, and a cast of characters both tragic and humorous enough to fill in the vast emptiness of the high plains, Walt Longmire attempts to see that revenge, a dish best served cold, is never served at all.

Craig Johnson writes awesome books! Walt Longmire rules. And watch out for the two best characters: Henry Standing Bear and Vic Morelli. This is only the first book. The whole series rocks, And, there’s a TV show on Netflix, not as good as the books but the actors run to hunky,
I enjoyed the Longmire movies on TV and because of them I have read all of Craig Johnson’s; Walt Longmire books. I enjoy the character interaction and the old west Wyoming mentality.
Another engrossing mystery solved by Sheriff Walt Longmire, with help from his friend Henry and his deputy Vic. Never a dull moment.
I am a big fan of CJ Box and now have another great writer in that genre of western iconoclasts, Craig Johnson’s Walt Longmire. I am now on my 4th book in the series and enjoy them all. Oddly he was obviously discovered some time ago since there is a Netflix series with him – which I just started watching. It’s good too but the books are better because you get a much better definition of Walt in the books and his terrific sense of humor that is sadly lacking in the series. (I equate him to a western version of “John Corey” of Nelson DeMille fame.) I strongly recommend giving it a try even if you don’t think you’d like the western theme, I think you’ll like it a lot!
I started out as a fan of the Netlfix show, Longmire. From there I discovered the stories stemmed from books, which weren’t easily found. It was during a visit to a used bookstore that I was able to purchase the first three in the series.
Since I have watched the episodes first, I read the chapters in Walt’s, Cady’s, Henry’s voices, along with the other characters. It has brought a new dimension into reading, one that has probably helped to hold my interest.
For those who haven’t watched the series, it’s worth the time if you enjoy mysteries or crime solving. The books are just as amazing as the show, if not more so. I think we are given more information through the pages, because there is more time allowed than within a 40 minute time constraint.
Wonderfully written and the characters bring you right into the story. Great storyline with attention to detail of Wyoming life. I’ll be reading the entire series.
The Longmyer series by Calvin Johnson is spell binding. His ability to describe the plains and mountains is out standing, like you are standing there with him. I’m on the 9th book in the series and it has become somewhat addictive. Great character development.
Quick moving, good plot. On a par with the Longmire series on Netflix
One of the best police mystery books I have ever read. No wonder it has been turned into a TV series. Now set to read the series of books and want to follow up with the TV series afterwards.
What can I say about Craig Johnson? He’s the real deal.
I loved this book! Can’t wait to read the next one.
The Longmire books are wonderfully addictive. You cannot read just one and I have read them all twice. You may have met Walt Longmire in the Netflix series, but the Walt of the books has a better sense of humor and does not take himself too seriously. I usually avoid serialized books, but these are my all-time favorites!
I loved this book. Liked the friendship between Walt Longmire and Henry Standing Bear. Excellent.
Longmire is a great character. I think he must be alive somewhere.
Good book must read.
excellent will introduce you to a string of great tales about Sheriff Walt Longmire
A great mystery. I liked the Wyoming setting. A modern day western.
Fell in love with the characters through the TV series. The books are no less entertaining. A combination of Western and mystery genres with characters with whom you can relate.
You start here. This is book one. This is where you fall in love with Walt Longmire and Henry Standing Bear. This is where you learn about Wyoming winters and Walt’s interesting relationship with Cheyenne spiritualism. Read this. You’ll want to read them all.
I have read every Craig Johnson book and live them! Wonderful writing and family stories. Always keeps me on the edge of my seat. Many mysteries I guess the plot early on but never his.
