Introducing Wyoming’s Sheriff Walt Longmire in this riveting first Longmire novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Land of WolvesFans of Ace Atkins, Nevada Barr and Robert B. Parker will love this outstanding first novel, in which New York Times bestselling author Craig Johnson introduces Sheriff Walt Longmire of Wyoming’s Absaroka County. Johnson draws on his deep attachment to the … Johnson draws on his deep attachment to the American West to produce a literary mystery of stunning authenticity, and full of memorable characters. After twenty-five years as sheriff of Absaroka County, Walt Longmire’s hopes of finishing out his tenure in peace are dashed when Cody Pritchard is found dead near the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. Two years earlier, Cody has been one of four high school boys given suspended sentences for raping a local Cheyenne girl. Somebody, it would seem, is seeking vengeance, and Longmire might be the only thing standing between the three remaining boys and a Sharps .45-70 rifle.
With lifelong friend Henry Standing Bear, Deputy Victoria Moretti, and a cast of characters both tragic and humorous enough to fill in the vast emptiness of the high plains, Walt Longmire attempts to see that revenge, a dish best served cold, is never served at all.

Great book looking forward to the next book
I stopped reading after 5-10 pages because of the profanity
I did not even finish reading this book. I couldn’t stay interested.
I thoroughly enjoy all the Longmire series. I admire the word craft of Mr. Johnson’s description of the landscape, weather, characters, and terrain. He is very good at fleshing out many of his characters and bringing them to life. Probably my favorite fiction author!
Fantastic read! Never disappointed with this author!
Good story. Enjoyed the characters.
didn’t really care for it
He’s amazing. Great writing and great characters!
Another great book in this series
If you like the Longmire TV series you’ll love this!
The strength of the book is the location. Wyoming becomes a part of the story. If you are a fan of the tv series you will like the book.
I went to a talk by Craig Johnson recently, after reading this, his first book, and he was as personable as his protagonist. Forget the Longmire series on TV, read the books — this guy can really write.
Loved the television series, and I just moved those actors into my brain as I made the transition to the printed page. I will be reading many more of these Walt Longmire mysteries. It’s like reuniting with some of my old friends.
Love the descriptive and thoughtful approach to both key story elements and side excursions.
Love the character and am planning to read more of the series.
One of the best series I’v ever read!
Although we enjoyed the Longmire series on Netflix, the characters are so much better in the books. Craig Johnson is a very erudite and intelligent man and it comes across in every one of his novels.
Well written, excellent story, likable, quirky characters.
I loved this book. Thank you.
I enjoy reading books about areas I know.
