Introducing Wyoming’s Sheriff Walt Longmire in this riveting first Longmire novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Land of WolvesFans of Ace Atkins, Nevada Barr and Robert B. Parker will love this outstanding first novel, in which New York Times bestselling author Craig Johnson introduces Sheriff Walt Longmire of Wyoming’s Absaroka County. Johnson draws on his deep attachment to the … Johnson draws on his deep attachment to the American West to produce a literary mystery of stunning authenticity, and full of memorable characters. After twenty-five years as sheriff of Absaroka County, Walt Longmire’s hopes of finishing out his tenure in peace are dashed when Cody Pritchard is found dead near the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. Two years earlier, Cody has been one of four high school boys given suspended sentences for raping a local Cheyenne girl. Somebody, it would seem, is seeking vengeance, and Longmire might be the only thing standing between the three remaining boys and a Sharps .45-70 rifle.
With lifelong friend Henry Standing Bear, Deputy Victoria Moretti, and a cast of characters both tragic and humorous enough to fill in the vast emptiness of the high plains, Walt Longmire attempts to see that revenge, a dish best served cold, is never served at all.

The entire series is excellent. All start with seemingly minor incidents and grow into full blown major crimes.
I enjoyed this book quite thoroughly; down to earth, great characters, interesting story, and a great ending.
I really liked the characters and their interaction. Such a great story with a big time mystery which ends in a very unexpected, shocking way.
I loved the series. However in the book the lady cop could not say a sentence that did not have not (f***) in it. I do not enjoy that. Was a great book other than that. I believe that that stays somewhere in your mind.
Great story of life in a modern Western town.
I’veread the whole series and think they are great!
I believe this is the first book in Craig Johnson’s Walt Longmire series. I first read the book a few years ago and recently listened to the audio version. I love this series! It is well writtened with great character development. I love the Native. American and Western themes through out the book. The dialogue is funny. It is a great read and I highly recommend alll the books in the Longmire series
I completely enjoyed the complexity of the relationships between the characters. This is much more than a “who done it” book.
Love all his books and the tv series!
I love the author
I originally saw these stories as the cable series Longmire, which I loved. The stories and the characters can be slightly different, but that makes reading this series feel fresh and new. Craig is a terrific writer, and the books add a depth and breadth to the TV version that was a delight.
I’ve watched some of the shows on Netflix but the book is better. Great character development and prose bordering on poetic. I will be reading more.
I read a lot but seldom recommend but this deserves a reading.
I cannot believe I am Not giving this book 5 stars! I was looking forward to reading it after watching all the Longmire seasons on Netflix.
I found the book very hard to follow. I was not sure when Longmire was is the present and when it was a flashback. Also couldnt follow conversations and know who was speaking when.
I realize Longmire is not politically correct, but in the book, he came across as crass. Vic is unlikeable as well! Her language as demeanor is very disrespectul. I did like Henry Standing Bear.
In this case, I would have to say, “The show is better than the book.”
Can’t get enough.
it was okay.
