This novel of awesome beauty and power is a moving saga about people, relationships, and the boundaries of love. Through Jean M. Auel’s magnificent storytelling we are taken back to the dawn of modern humans, and with a girl named Ayla we are swept up in the harsh and beautiful Ice Age world they shared with the ones who called themselves The Clan of the Cave Bear. A natural disaster … natural disaster leaves the young girl wandering alone in an unfamiliar and dangerous land until she is found by a woman of the Clan, people very different from her own kind. To them, blond, blue-eyed Ayla looks peculiar and ugly–she is one of the Others, those who have moved into their ancient homeland; but Iza cannot leave the girl to die and takes her with them. Iza and Creb, the old Mog-ur, grow to love her, and as Ayla learns the ways of the Clan and Iza’s way of healing, most come to accept her. But the brutal and proud youth who is destined to become their next leader sees her differences as a threat to his authority. He develops a deep and abiding hatred for the strange girl of the Others who lives in their midst, and is determined to get his revenge.

I read this book in my teens and then the movie came out. This is such a great book and to re-read at any time in your life to see the strength and beauty of how strong of character anyone can rise to be. I love this book so much and recommend it to anyone who needs the adventure/reality of what it took to survive and overcome the dawn of man as a woman.
Very different. Unusual but probably realistic in the time of caveman! Found it a great read but not my usual clean romance!
I have read this series and thoroughly enjoyed every book they are so well written and keep your interest totally and you can’t wait to get into the next book in line her characters are people you can relate to loved them
I fell in love with this book and couldn’t wait for each sequel to come out. I read all of them and was sorry when they were over.
First of a great series of books providing a story of the beginning of homosapiens.
I just loved the whole series
Her research is unbelievable, she recreates the world of pre-historice time as if it were yesterday. The way she tells how these people lived and created their tools and clothing and how the hunted and foraged is amazing. I love this series and I have read it at least 4 of 5 times and still enjoy every word of all six books.
I read this book many, many years ago and it is still one of my favorites of all time. I still recommend it to younger readers that are looking for a good book to read and have never heard of it. I get many a thank you!
This is the first book in the series Earth’s Children. Great read enjoyed envisioning the way our long ago relatives lived way back when. Very informative with excellent descriptions of life in the early days of man. All the books are great in this series.
I have read all the series of the Clan of the Cave Bear 3 times already. There are 6 books altogether, love them all.
I had read Clan of the Cave Bear at least twice before buying it for my Kindle! It’s that good!!
Alya is a Cro Magnum child, orphaned because of an earthquake, who is adopted by a group of Neanderthals. These people call themselves clan and talk in an elaborate sign language that also involves their who bodies as well as facial expressions. The author’s explanation of their society may not be scientific, but neither is it complete fantasy. Author Jean Auel writes that the Clan people live through memories stored in the occipital area of their brains and can no longer innovate. Each person in a clan has a well defined place and cannot act outside of it.
Ayla, being homo sapiens, neither has the memories or the genetic inhibitions of her new family and community. In order to survive, she does her best to fit into the clan, but does and learns things the others cannot. She is considered ‘lucky’ by most of these people, but almost always causes anger in the son of the clan’s mate (as they define family). This leads to many problems not only for her, but also for the entire clan.
The entire Clan of the Cave Bear series is one of my favorites. I have read it through twice and offers and interesting glimpse into the life of early humans as they travel across eastern Asia. Also quite educational as the character learns how to use local plant and animals as medicine, as well has learning how they made tools to survive every day life.
Excellent book.I read it years ago and it only seems like I read it this week.I’ve read all but the last one in the series.again excellent book
Read this many years ago. Really unique story. Difficult to read. Long. But worth the effort. Jean sets up a story that doesn’t require you to have a crazy imagination. That’s what makes it so amazing. You feel like you’re in the middle of this world that existed many eons ago. I’ve read the whole series up to the last one. It’s sitting by my bed, a GIANT of a book. I hope to get to it someday.
I felt as if I was there!
This book is filled with historical research and believable characters. The story is well written and easy to follow, but thought provoking.
A wonderful and original theme!
