This novel of awesome beauty and power is a moving saga about people, relationships, and the boundaries of love. Through Jean M. Auel’s magnificent storytelling we are taken back to the dawn of modern humans, and with a girl named Ayla we are swept up in the harsh and beautiful Ice Age world they shared with the ones who called themselves The Clan of the Cave Bear. A natural disaster … natural disaster leaves the young girl wandering alone in an unfamiliar and dangerous land until she is found by a woman of the Clan, people very different from her own kind. To them, blond, blue-eyed Ayla looks peculiar and ugly–she is one of the Others, those who have moved into their ancient homeland; but Iza cannot leave the girl to die and takes her with them. Iza and Creb, the old Mog-ur, grow to love her, and as Ayla learns the ways of the Clan and Iza’s way of healing, most come to accept her. But the brutal and proud youth who is destined to become their next leader sees her differences as a threat to his authority. He develops a deep and abiding hatred for the strange girl of the Others who lives in their midst, and is determined to get his revenge.

Truly a wonderful series.
I read this book every 2 years to immerse my mind in adventure and reignite my love of a lost girl in the harshest wilderness. She renews my can-do spirit. Bonus points for teaching survival skills and respect for nature.
What an incredible book! After reading this I bought, then read the whole series!
This is a wonderful and exciting historical fiction! All the way through the series.Ms. Aurel’s research is extensive and can be a little too much, but I love learning the small details.
Great re-creation of life 35,000 years ago.
Educational. One of my all time favorite books
I was surprised by how drawn into this book I was. It had been out for years, but when I got into the story, I was amazed by the incredible society that came through the mind of the author. So realistic, basic human or almost human actions in early man. Wow! Great read!
I was on a date and he recommended this book to me. The writing is mesmerizing and intricate. I loved the different characters and how the main character faced different challenges. A lot of wisdom without any preachy writing.
I loved this book. I’ve read it twice. Very well researched and the characters seem so real.
Excellent read. Well written. Couldn’t put it down
Favorite book of the series
Perhaps the first and best novel I ever read about a primitive person from her point of view.
Love all her books. Her incorporation of researched life style of the era into her writing is unparalleled.
Read it years ago and enjoyed it thoroughly. The research that was done to make this book believable was amazing.
I absolutely loved this series!
This series is one of my all time favorites.
This started it all, my journey with the Clan and what came after.
If I could only have two books for the rest of my life, Clan of the Cave Bear would be one. Jean Auel is a master of description and detail. I have learned so much about the terrain, plants and animals, and more, all within a great story. In a book of this size you would expect way too much repetition. Not in this book. Only enough to make sure the reader understands and remembers when it’s important to the story. Oh, and my other book would be the Bible.
