An American classic first published in 1985 by William Morrow and adapted into an Academy Award-winning film, The Cider House Rules is among John Irving’s most beloved novels. Set in rural Maine in the first half of the twentieth century, it tells the story of Dr. Wilbur Larch—saint and obstetrician, founder and director of the orphanage in the town of St. Cloud’s, ether addict and abortionist. … abortionist. It is also the story of Dr. Larch’s favorite orphan, Homer Wells, who is never adopted.
“A novel as good as one could hope to find from any author, anywhere, anytime. Engrossing, moving, thoroughly satisfying.” —Joseph Heller, author of Catch-22

The Cider House Rules is a novel that has since become a major motion picture.
However, I read this novel before watching the movie and fell in love with the authors writing, his detailed background into the research to develop a storyline of morals constructed around an orphanage and the main character Homer Wells.
The heartwarming tale of …
An Oldie But Goodie!
“Goodnight you princes of Maine, you kings of New England.”
With all the changes swirling around Planned Parenthood, Roe vs. Wade, and tyranny by old conservative white guys, now might be a great time to refresh our collective memory on just what happens to women who don’t have access to safe, legal, affordable abortions.

The movie, The cider house rules with Michael Caine and Tobey McGuire was good, but the book was even better. It tells the tale of an orphanage back in the 1930’s and how difficult it was for the orphans to get adopted once they reached a certain age. Very good!
The book covered many different points of view on the topic of abortion which I found to be interesting. A unique book.
Always great
This is a classic
This is my favorite John Irving book( I have read many). This is a great story with wonderful, fleshed out characters. I highly recommend it to everyone.
A CLASSIC
It as been so long since I read this book I can not rationally classify it for review. Sorry! I know I enjoyed it, but it has been quite a while since I read it.
not what I expected at all. I still don’t know what I think about this one
What started off a little slowly turned into a page turner
One of my favorite John Irving novels. He has such wonderful way of weaving humor, pathos, and even tragedy through a world full of weird and wonderful people. And like on of my other favorite authors, John MacDonald, he is able to present a world view with real moral fiber without the slightest hint of didacticism.
FAR< FAR better than the movie! A must read.
Ostensibly, THE CIDER HOUSE RULES is the story of Dr. Wilbur Larch, who founds an orphanage at St. Cloud Maine, and of his favorite orphan Homer Wells, who follows in his footsteps and eventually becomes a doctor.
But the novel is so much more than that. During the time period of this novel, set between the 1920s and the 1950s, abortion was …
Great story, quirky characters, relevant.
One of his best — and that’s saying a lot!
This is John Irving’s best book, in my opinion.
Wonderful. I’ll re-read it.
Great book
One of my favorite books ever make sure to read
