‘Wow, wow, wow. What a cracker of a book … had me hooked from start to finish … I was absolutely gripped … finding myself flicking the kindle pages over as fast as you like.’ Jen Med’s Book ReviewsOn a hot summer’s morning, a young father is found murdered in a cornfield, outside the quiet town of Colton. Tied to a post, arms spread wide; Detective Robyn Carter is reminded of the … Carter is reminded of the crucifixion, and she knows she’s looking for a killer with a twisted sense of right and wrong.
The victim’s girlfriend is devastated, unable to fathom how she will tell her sick little boy. Still reeling from her own loss, Robyn vows she will find the killer – no matter what.
But then a local doctor – a popular woman with a young family of her own – is found dead outside her surgery. There are similarities between her and the first body and Robyn must take another look at the picture-postcard town, where no one has any enemies.
Can Robyn untangle the hidden web of secrets, lies, and smouldering grudges, at the heart of this close-knit community, before another life is lost?

A new case for DI Carter and this time she might not be able to figure out what’s going on in time. When the killings don’t stop Robyn Carter gets under pressure and her job is on the line. The man she thinks might be the number one suspect is “untouchable” and that infuriates her. She can’t make the pieces fit and then she get’s a message from her frenemy Amy, the reporter – HELP.
Great new story, with twist and turns and a lot more information about Robyn Carters personal life and a shocking end. Can’t wait to read more!
I loved this book!! I love Det. Carter and can’t wait for more from this author.
Set in a small English area away from the big cities, a killer is on the loose. But a detective by the name of Robyn is on the hunt and vety good at her job.
Robyn is a likeable cop with no one waiting at home for except her cat. The first victim is strung up like a scarecrow in a field and I have to say that scene pulls you right into the book.
Jirdon seems a nice young man, with a girlfirend Rebecca and her son Dylan. You feel for Jordon as Robyn looks into his past and his relationship with his father.
Then a friend of Jordan’s is found dead and it seems there is a serial killet in town. Smart police procedural with the frustrating reality of trying to fit the pieces of the puzzle. You meet the other cops, all painstakingly working the case.
Never take a person at face value is one lesson Robyn learns in this case….and it is an eye opener! The thurd murder majes you really wonder what is going on as you search through the clues. The problem I had was the case went on too long with vital clues not being shown until too near the end. And ince those clues cane out, the case was basically over. Also, Robyn’s mixed feelings for another cop seened thrown in and not believable as she was so involved in the case.
The author does a good job of building the local towns, sports, and community activities. The sense of frustration that one feels when the puzzle won’t work was very real as was the
amount of work that goes into an investigation.
But unlike some reviewers, I was not scared or on the edge of my seat….well written solid writing but the ot needed to be tightened up and late clues gave too much away after spending si much time trying to solve it. So I give it 3.8 stars
The Chosen Ones ( DI Robyn Carter #5) by author Carol Wyer is a suspenseful mystery with gruesome murders and lots of secrets. DI Robyn is still working through her life after the death of Davies her fiancee. I really like how Robyn is so bonded to Schrodinger, the rescued cat and calms herself at times by watching it with her phone app through the use of a nanny cam.
Now that there have been three odd murders she has a hard time finding the answers she needs to solve these crimes. Her boss, DCI Flint is on her case as always to solve the murders, but he has also warned her against further questioning of Nathaniel Jones-Kilby, the father of the first victim, Jordan Kilby.
As the story progresses we begin to wonder how the possibilities of a planned High Speed 2 (HS2) railway line, a religious ink to the way the murders were staged, and Pharmacals Healthcare company could be links to the clues for solving the crimes. Is there one killer or two? A very good story with several characters who seem to be guilty.
I enjoy the Robyn Carter mystery series. Each one leaves you with a question or two about the future of Robyn’s personal life.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book.
I’ve just started reading British authors and absolutely love all of Carol Wyer’s books. I’ve read the first 5 of the Detective Robyn Carter series and can’t put them down.
4 stars
Detective Inspector Robyn Carter gets called out to the scene of a man crucified in a farmer’s field. He was twenty-three year old Jordan Kilby. He was the son of a very famous businessman who was not well liked. After interviewing his mates with whom he visited a pub the evening of his death, they find out that they didn’t care much for Jordan. They thought him odd with his Marvel heroes and his cycling. He played footie with them and that was mostly the reason he was tolerated. His girlfriend Rebecca was not liked, either. Rebecca’s recollections about Jordan don’t seem to tally with everyone else’s either.
Robyn’s team interviews the villagers, Jordan’s father and those who even knew him as an acquaintance. When Jordan’s only visible friend Owen is murdered, the police begin to speculate. Motive? What is going on? AS the forensic evidence begins to become available, the investigation widens.
Dr. Lucy Harding is run down with her own car outside of her surgery one evening. She was the single mother of a five-year old son. Is this murder related to the other two? Robyn thinks it is. Robyn also has a pesky reporter named Amy who is constantly harassing her for information. It only adds another dimension of stress to the investigation. Slowly, very slowly, Robyn and her team are making progress.
At the 80% mark on my Kindle, it all becomes clear. Now the reader must wait for the police to catch up. The killer’s identity comes as little surprise, but the fun was getting there. And there is a very interesting subplot about drugs and bad boys doing bad things.
When the police figure out who the killer is, the story picks up at a breakneck speed. Suddenly they are rushing not only to catch a killer, but unknown to them to save the pesky reporter Amy.
This book is well written and plotted, even if the story did seem to move slowly at times. The few minor typos are not too bad. The suspense begins right away with the murder of Jordan. The tension continues throughout the story as the police become very frustrated at not being able to solve the crimes and are inundated with seemingly inconsequential clues and side trips. The book tells the story of a painstaking police investigation with all its inherent details: the weapons, the crime scene, the forensics and all of the various personalities involved. Robyn’s team gets along pretty well, but Robyn herself seems a little high maintenance. I understand about her personal loss and am very glad that she got a cat for company. The killer is a very interesting character; well-drawn and played. The description of the book listed is not all that accurate. I wouldn’t describe Jordan as a doting father or much loved and His body wasn’t left in the cornfield for his family to see. Oh, I could go on. It stayed in the back of my mind as I read the book, and then I decided that it irritated me.
I would like to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for forwarding to me a copy of this good book to read, enjoy and review.
