NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A scorching forbidden love threatens to tear a rift through the Black Dagger Brotherhood in J. R. Ward’s newest novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling series. Xcor, leader of the Band of Bastards, convicted of treason against the Blind King, is facing a brutal interrogation and torturous death at the hands of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Yet after a life marked by … Brotherhood. Yet after a life marked by cruelty and evil deeds, he accepts his soldier’s fate, his sole regret the loss of a sacred female who was never his: the Chosen Layla.
Layla alone knows the truth that will save Xcor’s life. But revealing his sacrifice and his hidden heritage will expose them both and destroy everything Layla holds dear—even her role of mother to her precious young. Torn between love and loyalty, she must summon the courage to stand up against the only family she has for the only man she will ever love. Yet even if Xcor is somehow granted a reprieve, he and Layla would have to confront a graver challenge: bridging the chasm that divides their worlds without paving the way for a future of even greater war, desolation, and death.
As a dangerous old enemy returns to Caldwell, and the identity of a new deity is revealed, nothing is certain or safe in the world of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, not even true love . . . or destinies that have long seemed set in stone.

best of the series so far and that is saying a lot.
Of all the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, which I have loved, this is the one I’ve been waiting for. I love the main characters. J.R. Ward is by far my favorite author. I have reread this series more than once. Very entertaining. Read the first one and you’ll be hooked.

J.R. Ward’s writhing is pure magic where the Black Dagger Brotherhood is concerned.

J.R. Ward and the Black Dagger Brotherhood is one of my all time favorite series, I highly recommend reading her books. They will make you laugh, cry and make you hate waiting on the next one she comes out with.
Love J R Ward books. Especially BDB books.
A great instalment to the world that JR Ward has built. If you’ve enjoyed the other books in the series than you’ll enjoy this one too.
What can I say? It’s J.R. Ward! Anything she writes should be on your auto-buy pile. You can’t go wrong with her!!
This is a very easy critique to write for J. R. Ward never disappoints. One thing I do love about this series is how she touches on the lives of the other brothers or even those that are close yet concentrates upon one specific area. In this case Layla. She has had to face a lot personally and I believe she found her own voice in this book. It took a while but she finally realized it was time to put the robes away no matter how much hurt she was going to face. For that I loved the backbone she found within.
I don’t want to say too much more because I do not like to tell spoilers it would ruin it for you. I will only say that this was a great book and I cannot wait to read her next book.
No Spoilers, but I do mention supporting characters that are in this book.
I am a huge J.R. Ward fan, but I got stuck on pause about 60% of the way into this Novel and I was bent on giving it three stars because of this. There are some exciting scenes between Quinn, Layla, & Blay in the first half that are excellent, but the lull in the plot afterward was longer than I expected.
HOWEVER, once I trudged through another 10% this book really picked up speed and gave ALOT of action. Maybe my struggles were because Ward is setting up future novels by giving us snippets of other stories. Trez, Viscious, Assail, Lassiter, and Throe all make appearances that seem to be readying us for future black dagger brotherhood goodness.
So if you get stuck like me, give it some more time and you won’t be disappointed in how things wrap at the end. Oh! and my favorite line in the book is when Quinn becomes “ambi-daggerous.” Ward is a genius with her quips and pop culture references. LOVE IT! Hope you love it too!
