Matt Westbrook leaves his 3 small children in the car for a few minutes while he stops in a shop. They are ages 3, 5, and 7. With a virus that’s rampant, he does not want to possibly expose the children to the virus in the store. Matt’s wife, Annabelle, has asked him to pick up a few things for dinner. On his way out of the store, he sees that the car is gone. Then he gets a text telling him not to call call the police and that instructions will follow. Matt is a partner in a law firm and Annabelle is a writer.
Matt runs home and tells Annabelle what has happened. They call a couple siblings and a friend to come and help advise them what to do. The next text says this person doesn’t want money. Instead, they can have their children back and Annabelle will take their place. What does this person want with Annabelle?
This is one of the best edge-of-the-seat thrillers I have read in quite awhile. What an incredible imagination this author has. Without giving out any spoilers, suffice to say that you do not want to miss this book. Fabulously well done, Alex Lake.

Wow! This was a totally gripping psychological thriller! With a twist you will never see coming! Matt Westbrook’s children are kidnapped. The kidnapper wants a ransom, but it does not involve money. The kidnapper will give the children back in place of Matt’s wife, Annabelle. Annabelle is the ransom. They are instructed not to contact the police and will have to make a decision quickly. There is unlimited suspense that will leave you on the edge of your seat as you spin through the pages. Alex Lake is a master storyteller. Prepare to sit down and read once you start!
Wow! What a great, suspenseful story. You won’t be bored, and if you think you’ve got it figured out … don’t be so sure.
A thrilling story filled with intense intrigue focused around a father whose children were kidnapped while in his care. As the story continued to unfold the complications kept me turning pages hoping for answers and with all the intrigue wanting answers to what happened to the children and how would this story play out……..definitely a great story!!!
The fact that the children were kidnapped and the mom was the ransom was a different take. I enjoyed it, especially the ending.
I enjoyed this book, it had me glued to the pages for sure. I can not say too much as I don’t want to give away the ending but it had me guessing until the last chapter for sure. A must read if you love suspense that is well written!
I couldn’t put it down
Definitely a “can’t put down” book!

REVIEW
This book was quite the read. It bounces back and forth between past and present, building the story slowly. I was drawn into the premise immediately and the story did not disappoint. I loved the quick chapters and multiple perspectives. It definitely build depth to the story and provided ease to read in between running errands and other appointments. I would say this is a slow burn mystery/suspense. I really liked it and will be looking into other books by Alex Lake!
This was my very first Alex Lake book but surely not the last! It starts off like a racehorse out of the gate and the tension never lets up. Tense, tight and oh so good!
Could. Not. Put. Down.
First I’ve read by the author; won’t be the last. Hint: Don’t start at bedtime or you’ll be up all night reading.
Thank you #netgalley and #harpercollins #harper360 for this eARC.
The Choice starts out on a quick pace with the kidnapping of Matt’s three children and it never lets up.
Who would do this and who would ask instead of ransom they would exchange his wife for his kids.
Fast paced and lots of twist turns come your way.
Great entertaining read.
