Kathleen Y’Barbo writes wonderful books. This one is set in Texas, New Orleans, and on the Chisholm Trail. There’s a lot of suspense and drama as well as secrets in this one. Secrets hide around almost every corner. The characters are strong, both the heroes and the villains. Don’t miss this amazing story.
The Chisholm Trail Bride by Kathleen Y’Barbo is a seriously fun read. I started it Saturday night and by 1:00 AM Sunday morning I had 80% of the book completed. I just could not put this book down! I enjoyed the historical details and learned quite a bit, but I LOVED the fictional details the most! This story is more an experience than a simple good read. Simply put, I was transported to Texas and New Orleans of 1889. When the characters were on the Chisholm Trail, I could feel the dust in the air, smell the cattle moving across the range, and hear the cowboys at night as they relaxed around the campfire while Eliza laid out under the stars dreaming of one day becoming an astronomer. And, when Eliza was in New Orleans, I was right there with her at the masquerade ball. I could hear the swish of the elegant ballgowns as women danced the night away with handsome masked men, and feel the claustrophobia as bodies upon bodies pressed into the glamorous dance hall. It was fun to feel like part of the story!
The characters in this story are the best. Eliza is a hoot! She is feisty and sassy, and when she verbally spars with someone — watch out! I very much enjoyed the fact that Eliza doesn’t let anyone control her, but she isn’t above listening to reason. She sticks to her guns when she is in the right, but isn’t afraid to concede when someone else has the better/safer/smarter idea. Eliza’s cousin, Justine, is one of the cutest fictional little girls ever, and she is hilarious. The chapters she is in are some of the best. And, Wyatt Creed is awesome. He’s loyal, noble, and self-sacrificing. He’s also incredibly smart and strong. And, he’s definitely swoon-worthy! I recommend reading this novel for Wyatt alone. LOL!
The Chisholm Trail Bride is a highly engaging, fast-paced Western Romance. I highly recommend this novel. If you are a fan of well-written, well-researched Westerns with sweet romance, adventure, and timely themes then The Chisholm Trail Bride by Kathleen Y’Barbo is the book for you!
I received a review copy of this novel in eBook form from the publisher, Barbour Books, via NetGalley. In no way has this influenced my review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.
This series of stand alones has been really good; each one unique. While I’ve enjoyed each of them I think The Chisholm Trail Bride is my favorite. Full of drama, intrigue, and yet heartwarming, I seriously couldn’t put it down. I desperately needed to see how things would be resolved.
Well developed characters that you will enjoy, or not enjoy, depending on who it is, the author did a very good job of giving them distinct, interesting personalities. I will say that Eliza irritated me at times. Sometimes she was a strong, independent woman. Other times she caved and gave in. But oh Wyatt. What a hero!!
With mystery, suspense, and romance this is a book that is sure to please lovers of historical fiction.
I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.
Book twelve in the Daughters of the Mayflower was another winner! ive read them all and was not disappointed by any of them. It is April 1880 and Eliza is allowed to go on a cattle drive with her father. She is preteen and goes to help the cook against her mother’s wishes. this particular drive changes her life forever. Gun shots were fired and secrets were kept. Travel ahead to May 1889 and Eliza is in her early twenties. She is in New Orleans visiting relatives and her father has hired a security guard company to keep her safe. one of the guards is very mysterious and keeps his hat down low and dresses in all black. and when they go back to their ranch home he comes as well. i couldnt help but like Eliza. she had been through a lot in her young life. all the characters were fun to get to know as i read along. This series is wonderful with different authors taking us on a journey from the beginning on the Mayflower to time periods in chronological order. i cant wait for the next one!

The cow trail comes alive in this mystery/romance. Kathleen Y’Barbo did her homework, the details of historic events brought this story to life. It all starts with a girl on the edge of childhood, wanting to join her father and brothers one last time on a cattle drive. That cattle drive changes the path of multiple lives. Eliza wants to ride horses and drive cattle. But her mother wants to her attend finishing school in New Orleans, where she grew up. But her father will give into anything his little girl wants. That is until she makes a choice for a husband. Now Eliza’s parents are united in keeping her away from her own terrible choice. But the groom’s desire for the marriage is stronger than anyone else realizes. Wyatt was Eliza’s best friend during childhood. But God had different plans for the future and they must both walk a different path. Now that he is in charge of his own business and is called to protect Eliza, their paths must meet again. But the fallout could be catastrophic, driving them even farther apart for good.
The characters come to life, pulling the reader into the story. Why is he hiding who he really is? Does she see the danger hunting her down? How will the right answer present itself with so many hurdles to clear? Kathleen Y’Barbo weaves just enough questions and misdirections into the story to keep the pages flying by. This story definitely ended too fast, but perfectly. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
The Chisholm Trail Bride by Kathleen Y’Barbo sits as the twelfth installment in the Daughters of the Mayflower series, but can be read as a stand-alone. I almost didn’t read this novel as I wasn’t familiar with the author. But to my surprise, I loved The Chisholm Trail Bride! The story held my attention from the beginning. It swirled mystery, suspense, and romance into a lovely combination. This mixture had me wondering how things would work out and kept me turning the pages. Although the ending came on really quick and felt almost too tidy, I loved that the author redeemed the events of the first trail ride with a beautiful ending.
I recommend The Chisholm Trail Bride by Kathleen Y’Barbo to readers of inspirational historical romance. I found this to be an entertaining and light read, perfect for a little escapism.

What a fantastic story to dive into! At a time when I had been struggling to concentrate enough to loose myself in a story, this was just the book that I needed to pick up. In no time I found myself fully pulled into the dynamics of this story and carried away, back in time for a cattle drive that I won’t soon forget. I enjoyed the witty banter between the characters, and the lush scenery along the way.
Wyatt Creed had a rough upbringing, yet he managed to surround himself with positive role models and though he may have made mistakes, he admitted it, and made recompense where he could. He stuck to his word and was a loyal friend.
Eliza Gentry may seem like she has stars in her eyes, but her feet are firmly planted on the ground. She struggles at times to find her own identity, as we all have done at one time or another. When the chips are down, she shows that she’s not afraid to fight for what she truly knows is right.
With a perfect balance of mystery and romance you are sure to fall in love with these characters! This is the perfect book to pick up and get lost in!
Each of the books in this collection stand on their own. Each story takes place during different event in American History. I have enjoyed each and every book, and I really hope there are a few more to come!
(I receive complimentary books for review from publishers, publicists, and/or authors, including Netgalley. I am not required to write positive reviews. The opinions I have expressed are my own.)
Y’all I can’t even begin to describe how sad I am to close the cover on this book. I have been with this series right from the beginning and loved every single one of them. I sincerely hope that Barbour decides to continue it further, as there’s still plenty of time in history left to cover.
I loved how the romance was developed in this one. I get that romance is often rushed in order to fit within the allotted number of pages for a book, but that can also make it seem more unrealistic to me. I am a big fan of there being a past friendship or connection prior to the story so that their relationship will feel more genuine from the start. This one gets bonus points for how well this was all worked out and woven in.
And Wyatt Creed? Oh, is he wonderful. You’ll love him, but I won’t spoil him for you. You’ll have to discover him for yourself.
With likable characters and intense energy, the author did a fantastic job of maintaining just the right balance of mystery and action to keep the pages turning. It didn’t take me long to devour this one at all despite my desire to make it last longer. This one met all the right criteria for being another solid installment into what has become one of my favorite series of all time.

The Chisholm Trail Bride is an easy-to-read tale of love and deception set in Texas and Louisiana in the late 1800s. The characters are engaging and believable. The plot revolves around a life-changing incident along the Chisholm Trail which is still having repercussions nine years later. A statement from Mrs. Gentry to Eliza sums it up: “…you may never know the things that happened to you to make your life what it is…and you many never know how difficult those choices were for your father.” Elements of faith are scattered throughout the narrative, and humorous moments enhance the story and lighten the mood. This is an interesting, enjoyable read, and I highly recommend it.

I love the cover of this book! I don’t usually read western type books but this one was really good. I like strong female characters and Eliza was that. It had romance and a bit of a situation for Eliza to get out of. I enjoyed the story
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the early copy
This was a delightful historical novel that included all the wonderful elements of a good read. The author crafted a well-researched account of life and adventure on the Chisholm trail. I have read her work before and always enjoy her character development and relationships. She has a talent for creating characters I care about. The pace of the book was great, moving towards a final resolution which was expected but super romantic.
I received a copy of the book from the publisher through NetGalley. This review is my honest opinion
I loved this wonderful historical romance novel!
The three main characters Eliza, Wyatt/John, and Ben are very well developed. I was able to connect with Eliza especially, very quickly. I thoroughly enjoyed the tidbits of star gazing and astronomy that were a thread throughout the book.
The information about how the members of a cattle drive would work together were wonderful. I enjoyed seeing what both Eliza and Wyatt were assigned to help with. I liked seeing Cookie’s attitude toward proper manners and requiring them of all of the men.
The plot of the story was great. I was definitely caught up in it and pushing to see a happy ending for Eliza. She went through some very difficult challenges along the way. I was glad to see each and every person who stepped up to help her get through them.

The Chisholm Trail Bride by Kathleen Y’Barbo. I enjoyed seeing how this played out with the young man who was supposed to be dead.. but was not! I enjoyed riding along the Chisholm trail and enjoyed the trip full of surprises, danger and hard work.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley and Barbour Publishers my review is voluntary.
If you enjoy a tale that has romance, mystery, intrigue and adventure, look no further as this novel has all that and more! There are 12 books in the series with different authors contributing their talents to tell wonderful stories based in history. The series books in order are: The Mayflower Bride, The Pirate Bride, The Captured Bride, The Patriot Bride, The Cumberland Bride, The Liberty Bride, The Alamo Bride, The Golden Bride, The Express Bride, The Rebel Bride, and The Blizzard Bride. While you can read each book individually, it has been a joy to me to read them in order as they were published.
In the latest installment of the series, a budding friendship grows as Wyatt Creed and Eliza Gentry look at the stars while on the Chisholm Trail. When readers open the pages, these two main characters are counting falling stars and naming constellations when most of the riders are asleep. During the last ride on the trail, a tragedy occurs that sets these two friends’ lives in opposite directions.
Now, nine years later, they are going to meet. The antagonist in the tale is named Ben Barnhart. Ben and Eliza were at one time engaged, and Ben is determined to make it a reality again. Ben is an odious character whose plans and schemes are bound to make his future less than what he envisions. All three characters’ lives are intertwined from start to finish in the book. The ending was out of this world!
Travel with Eliza Gentry and her family from the trail dust to the halls where balls are legendary in Louisiana! See how danger is avenged or averted, romance and dreams could come true in the latest tale of The Daughters of the Mayflower series!
This is book twelve from the Daughters of the Mayflower series. However I feel it is a stand alone book. I have read some but not all in this series, so I may have missed some history but I was not lost.
If you enjoy reading historical romance with mystery and lots of sparks you will love this one. Eliza Gentry is full of spunk. She is strong willed and loyal. When tragedy happens on the Chisholm trail life changes for Eliza. As she grows up she must live with consequences of decisions she has made and try to make right a wrong.
This was an action packed and intriguing historical romance! It truly kept me engaged!
I have to say I had a little struggle to relate to the heroine during the first part of the story, but she did some maturing along the way, and the hero just made up for her shortcomings with his heart of gold, honor and total devotion to her, that I kept rooting for this couple to find their Happily Ever After until the end! And it was quite satisfying!
Eliza Gentry and Wyatt Creed had been best friends during childhood in her father’s ranch in Texas until a tragedy at an unfortunate cattle drive sends Wyatt away. Now, ten years later, Eliza is very heard strong, and rebels against her family and wants to elope with Ben, the son of her father’s enemy. That’s how it ends in her father sending her off with the cattle drive heading to Forth Worth and the Barnhart ranch, under the protection of Wyatt, now a Pinkerton Agent.
This cattle drive seems the least convenient place to fall in love, with danger and death lurking at every turn at the hands of cattle thieves, but Wyatt can’t help his heart that has always belonged to Eliza. Can Eliza forgive his mistakes in the past? Can Wyatt protect her and, more important, will they both survive their adventure to have a chance at true love?
I was totally engaged with the story, that was fast paced and full of action. The villain, Ben, was truly awful and that made it more exciting and dangerous.
Wyatt was a true hero and I loved how he melts Eliza’s defenses with his actions, more than his words. The romance was really sweet and tender in spite of the action and danger amidst.
I enjoyed this story and recommend it to all historical romance lovers! It has a mix of everything: adventure, drama, a bit of humor, intrigue, and the sweetest romance!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing via NetGalley and this is my honest and unbiased review
This was my first book by Kathleen Y’Barbo but it definitely won’t be my last! Once I started this book, I truly could not put it down. Breath-taking, toe-curling, squeal out loud! This book has it all and with twists and turns that hold the reader from the first page!
I recommend this book for lovers of historical fiction!
Just a Glimpse of the Trail….. The book starts with one night on the beginning of the trail and ends nine years later on the same spot on the trail. It also starts with two fourteen year old boys interested in the same spoiled girl and picks up nine years later with the same rivalry. What I have enjoyed about the series is the history interspersed, but this book only gives us a glimpse of the trail. It wasn’t believable for me that one boy would be so obsessed with the girl that he was still insisting that they would marry for nine years. I have enjoyed other books in this series, including ones by this author, but this book is not as good.
A 3.5 stars read for me. Overall I was able to stay engaged in the story. I became invested in the story of the h & H and so was hoping for happily ever after. I did find I liked the characters with the villian being easy to dislike. I’ve watched a lot of westerns with my husband and the book read to me like a good western movie. This is part of a series but this is my 1st title with the series and that didn’t diminsh enjoying the story. A few things that did drop it from solid 4 star for me was there were a few times in the story that I went back to reread because a detail or plot point was put in the story in a way that didn’t seem to flow or not given context. I would have liked to know more of the H’s past years. The h was an intelligent woman with spirit and that was nice. A couple of times she acted counter to her character. For example, she has a long past with the villian yet didn’t recognize the persons voice through a door. Also, the H swears to stay away from the h & the switch in thinking did seem a bit quick for me. I think these points are a “your mileage may vary” type of thing as this has gotten several higher ratings. I would try this author again. I think this is very nice for a quick, relaxing, fun read. I appreciate the history lesson of the trail and life in those times. That was not boring.
TEXAS! The stars…big and bright! Oh, my. Be still my heart. Kathleen Y’Barbo writes about Texas in a way that makes me feel like I am back in my adopted home state.
The Chisholm Trail Bride introduces us to the main characters, who are all in their early teen years. There is Eliza Gentry, daughter of a prosperous cattleman; Wyatt Creed, son of a retired Texas Ranger, who is also an alcoholic; and Ben “Benjy” Barnhart, son of a Texas judge. The narrative begins as they are about to set out on the Chisholm Trail to deliver cattle to buyers in Kansas.
The trail ride brings joy and deep heartbreak along the way, and this ride becomes the three’s last trail ride. Ben, unlike Eliza and Wyatt, creates his own problems due to his selfish and wantonly cruel ways.
Years later, we find Eliza living in Louisiana with her mother. Life has not been the same for her since the trail ride, and it looks like it never will be.
Y’Barbo writes a mesmerizing and captivating tale, melding mystery, murder and kidnapping, along with love and forgiveness. Her portrayal of the trail leaves you wishing you were under the stars, too, etching the story in your memory. She draws such wonderful pictures of Texas, Louisiana and all the happenings between the two states that I was often left breathless. (I also never guessed the ending, which is something that almost never happens to me. It is stunning and surprising!)
The Author’s Note at the end is a do not miss portion of the novel, as there is a plethora of fascinating information about the Chisholm Trail.
I received this book from NetGalley. However, I was under no obligation to write a review.
