The Chieftain
A Highlander’s Heart and Soul Novel
by Maeve Greyson
Alexander MacCoinnich is a man who has principles and honour, even though he’s a mercenary he’s honest! Though he’s been labeled a traitor he chooses his fights. After a job gone wrong he’s injured and barely makes it to safety alive. His brothers find help with the Clan Neal. And his life is forever changed!
Catriona Neal has been taking care of her family and clan ever since her father got ill, which was a blessing for he was an evil man who thrived on fear and torture for his people. Unfortunately for Catriona her twin brother is just like their father!
Things change for Catriona and Alexander a journey of hope and love begin. But before their life together begins there’s plenty of intrigue and mystery. A vilain asking for retribution, plenty of heart pounding action and lots of sizzling chemistry!
This was an exceptional story, Maeve Greyson has a magical gift of pulling the reader in to the story, a very enjoyable read!
Highly recommend to lovers of Highlander Romance.

Book one in the A Highlander’s Heart and Soul Novel series a well-written story. This is mercenary Alexander MacCoinnich and Catriona Neal’s story there is suspense, drama, danger, a traitor, a very evil man, and romance. A story I enjoyed reading .
This story caught my interest from the first page to the last,Alexander MacCoinnich and his brothers and cousin are mercenaries for hire ,but they choose clans that they believe in the cause.Catriona Neal is the lady of clan Neal and has been protecting the clan from her twin brother and fathers cruelty.Alex and his men were injured very bad during the last battle. They hid in a cave and almost freeze because it is so cold. They are found by warriors of the Neal clan,They are brought to the castle,Catriona nurses Alex till he is well. This story has a sense of humor, drama danger.Alex’s family brought a lot to story.Would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good Scottish romance story.
I must say this story is very worthy of a solid 5 star rating! I loved this story from start to finish and there was definitely not a dull moment.
Alexander MacCoinnich, whose clan was mostly wiped out due to sickness, is now a hired mercenary, along with his brothers, best friend and 2 cousins. After a skirmish, he and one of his brothers gets badly hurt and while they are all hiding in a cave, they get rescued and brought to the Clan Neal’s keep. Alexander is at death’s door with all his injuries but is saved by the lady of the keep, Catriona Neal.
Catriona is a very strong and stubborn miss but is at the mercy of her evil father and sadistic twin brother. All she wants to do is protect her clan from their evilness, which is not always easy! As she cares for Alexander, a tender connection is made but she fears nothing can come of it because she had made a promise to her mother on her deathbed that she would never abandon the clan. As for Alexander, he has nothing to offer her…..but love always has a way to make things work out:)
What follows is quite the adventure and I thought the whole story was very well written. Catriona and Alexander are so perfect for each other!! Now I look forward to Graham’s story….

An enthralling story with lots of fighting and death as was the norm during that historical time in Scotland when war ravaged that nation. But amidst all that, two people were able to find love and rid their keep of all the evil that had been hurting their people for a long time. The hero, Alexander was a great highlander warrior who totally fell for the headstrong Catriona. Watching their love develop was wonderful, all while trying to stay alive with foiled rescues and defeating the bad guys. It was pretty intense at times. But I’m glad to say it did end with an HEA which is to be expected in a romance. And since this story was a romance there were still some sexy times between Alexander and Catriona in between fighting for their lives. Overall an enjoyable read.

I will first say what a wonderful book, the storyline was different from her other books, and I will say I really loved it. Well written, page turner, I want more. Alexander, is a brawn highlander who is severely wounded and has a angel looking after him. He has not the energy to fight this angel any longer, and knows in his heart he cannot have her. He is a protector of innocents and must be so for her as well. He is torn between what is right, and what he wants.
Catriona, is a strong willed woman, who has been protecting her people as promised to her mother on her deathbed. So when men are brought to her keep, she has no other choice but to help them, heal them, as best as she can.
Love the wit of these two, and the charismatic way he woes her. And how she is stunned on how she feels for the male figure.
But they both will do whatever it takes to bring justice to those she has vowed to protect, even from her deranged father, and brother.
If you like mystery, romance and danger, you will love this.
This books has all the elements of a wonderful read, with lots of mystery, romance, lies, truths and mistrust.
This was given to me by the author and I am giving a honest review, of her new book, “The Chieftain”.
This was a great novel! I loved most of the characters. There were a few that were hard to love because of their actions. There were some tense moments and some surprising moments. It was very absorbing and I am looking forward to more books in the series.
Thoroughly enjoyed reading “The Chieftan” Alexander and Catriona were wonderful together. A terrific love story and action adventure. Who could ask for more. Maeve hit a home run with this book. I really was most reluctant to put it down. Anyone who is into Historical Romance with action thrown in will be entranced with this story. A really terrific read, keep up the good work, cant wait to hear what happens next to Alexander and Catriona. Thank you for the privilage of allowing me to red and review this book. Sue D.
After losing almost their entire clan to illness, Alexander MacCoinnich and his three brothers, his best friend, and two cousins have been forced to become mercenaries. They have honor, however, and only fight for those Alexander deems worthy, even if they sometimes face accusations of “traitor.” When he and his brother are badly injured and the group all face death from exposure following the deadly Glencoe Massacre, they find themselves at Clan Neal’s keep under the care of her mistress, Catriona. She has acted as lady of the keep since her mother’s death, striving to keep her deathbed promise to protect the clan from her cruel father, the chieftain, as well as her equally cruel twin brother, Calum. Her father’s death only makes things worse as Calum proves himself to be even more sadistic and evil than their father was.
With the future of Clan Neal looking very bleak indeed, Alexander could be Catriona’s salvation, but she has to decide it it’s worth leaving her clan to their own fate. Alexander is considering giving up his warring ways to settle down and have something stable to offer Catriona. But when her father’s death unleashes Calum and the clan’s fear of him gives him power, it may be too late for Catriona to escape her own fate, much less save her kin from theirs.
This book gave me an enormous sense of suspense and danger almost from the very beginning. No one is who they seem and you don’t really know who has the power or who can be trusted. Alexander was a fantastic hero, the classic big and strong type. Catriona has always been alone until this point, since her mother’s death. Meeting Alexander gives her the first real hope she’s had in a long time and she proves to be quite the fighter, especially when she learns things about her family that are even more sordid than she had expected. Alexander makes Catriona feel safe and she knows he’s a danger to her heart just as well as she knows he’s a mercenary and she can’t hope to keep him by her side. Catriona also fears the loss of her people to her brother’s evil and her dire situation arouses Alexander’s protectiveness and makes him determined to help her. The danger brings the two together quickly, but in a believable way.
Ms. Greyson has given us a group of great heroes that are truly likable and I look forward to learning more about each and their backstories in future installments of this very promising series.
I received an advanced copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Alexander and his brothers are mercernaries for hire. They get in a pickle when they get in an ambushed encounter with the campbells. They manage to escape but barely. Catronia enters the picture. She is trying to protect her clan. Her father is failing and her brother is just as mean as her father. She’s hoping to keep it all together. Can Alexander and Catronia find true love and save her clan or will the king interfer.
Very well written. Plenty of action and romance. Author has two other complete romances in this series about three Scottish brothers.
AWESOME!!! Love Mrs. Greyson’s writing love all her books!
