A USA Today Bestseller!Welcome to an old-school Le Veque novel…A mighty knight known as The Centurion is the man in control behind a powerful liege with dementia, but when his love for a young woman begins to compromise the stability of the Scottish marches, he must make a choice between love… or peace.Sir Torston de Royans is known on the border as a man of reason, wisdom, and great strength. … reason, wisdom, and great strength. He also happens to serve a greatly respected liege who slips further into dementia with each passing day. Lord Lionel Harringham believes himself to be a Roman Caesar, and Torston is his great Centurion. Unfortunately, Lord Lionel also commands one of the largest castles in the north and Torston finds himself in a position of not only the protector of the castle known as The Lyceum, but the protector of Lord Lionel’s reputation.
Adding to this stressful situation is Lady Alyx de Ameland. A young woman from an allied family, she has loved Torston for as long as she can recall, but he’s never shown much interest in her. At least not publicly, but privately, Torston longs for Alyx a great deal. However, he cannot think of marriage because of Lord Lionel’s madness. It wouldn’t be fair to bring a wife into the mix of madness that plagues The Lyceum.
But Torston isn’t the only one who longs for the lovely Alyx.
A Scottish laird has his eye on her, too. Laird Douglas Kerr is a man who covets the English lass and does everything in his power to convince Alyx’s father that he would make a good husband for her, but his motives are not honorable. He covets Alyx’s land more than Alyx herself, and as Torston realizes that he can no longer wait to declare his intentions for Alyx, something he has been keeping secret for years finally makes itself, or herself, known… his betrothed.
And she brings hell with her.
It’s Medieval mayhem, madness, and matrimony on the borders as Torston and Alyx fight for a love that, once realized, is more powerful than all the armies in England and Scotland.
Will true love prevail in spite of the odds?
Note: This book will be in excess of 350 pages.

Love all her books.
This was so much fun to read! Nice twists bordering on somewhat improbable, but still a good story. I’ll definitely be reading more tales from this author.
I love all her books and wait patiently for each new one.
This author lets me enjoy learning history in a most enjoyable manner.
Wonderful book
I was so hooked from the first page! Alyx has loved Torston de Royans for nine years, she can’t remember a time when she didn’t love him, but as she has become a woman Torston is starting to look at her differently. Torston has begun to see Alyx as a woman and can’t help but love her, but as he battles over what he wants and what his duty is his heart is in turmoil. Alyx has always known that Torston was betrothed but the reality has come to fruition, when his betrothed unexpectedly shows up. Torston has so much on his plate, his liege is is slipping further into his madness, he is realizing how much he loves Alex, border wars are coming and his betrothed shows up. This is such a great story. This is one of my new favorite Kathryn LeVeque story’s. I honestly couldn’t wait to pick it up each day and continue reading. I absolutely fell in love with Torston and Alyx, I laughed and I had tears, definitely an emotional story. Definitely a must read!
Thorston De Royans is the Centurion of the Lyceum but not the one in Rome. His overlord has a fanatical obsession with all things Roman and likes to be called Great Caesar. It takes a lot of tact and gentle persuasion to keep the man on an even keel, and the problems with with the Scottish raiders doesn’t help.
Lady Alyx De Ameland has loved Thorston since she was a child, but he keeps turning away from her. He could surely break his betrothal to some woman he’s only met once if he tried.
This is a wonderful story full of great characters. Our hero has the patience of a saint. So many people to keep happy and safe, and all of them pushing him to his limit. Our heroine is loving and strong but incredibly single-minded.
The characters with special needs and treated with love and respect from all.
There is a conspiracy going on that will cause a lot of trouble for everyone.
A engrossing book that will keep you reading until you finish.
As usual our author has found an original tale to tell us in her masterful way.
I loved it.
When I began this story I knew I would be transported back to medieval times and I could not wait! Especially since it is an earlier novel come forward for us to enjoy and obtain some history of characters! Kathryn Le Veque is truly the Queen of Medieval Romance and her years of research always comes through the creation of her amazing tales. Just imagine a knight who, in addition to his tremendous strength, is kind and reasonable. Thus was Sir Torston De Royans also known as The Centurion by his liege lord, who was dealing with dementia. It was as heartbreaking then as now and Torston was trying to protect his liege’s castle and his name and reputation. A heavy burden!
I was hooked in the first chapter when Torston saved Lady Alyx de Ameland when she was in the woods and some Scots attacked. Alyx had always loved him and had been asking him to marry him since she was eight years old! It just warmed my heart.. But he had been betrothed to another, on paper forever and knew it was futile to have feelings for her although he did.
Of course it is never that simple and as a Scottish laird vies to marry Alyx, things begin to change. He only wants so of her land.
Does our knight come forward and fight for Alyx? Truly I could not put this book down once I started and it brought out all of my emotions. Everything you want in a story by this great author is present and then so. So sit back and take the journey with The Centurion and his Lady!
Sir Torston de Royans is the commander of Lord Lionel Harringham’s great army at Lyveum castle. Harringham believes himself to be a Roman Caesar, and Torston is his great Centurion is great campion. Lady A Alyx de Ameland has been in love with Torston for most of her life and she keeps telling him she marry him or no one else, even though she knows his father betrothed him to another lady. Torston’s feelings for her have been evolving into something else, but it’s a bit of a problem he’s still betrothed. Torston must come to terms with his feeling when another has his eye on her, Laird Douglas Kerr is a man who covets the English lass and will stop at nothing to make her his wife. A great adventure with many twist and turns as Alyx fights for her love and Torston fights for everything he hold dear, his honor, his loyalty and his lady love against betrayal and secrets. I loved this story with great characters and story line. An excellent story I loved and I voluntarily wrote a reviews.
What an incredible creation Kathryn LeVeque has crafted for us to read and savor. Sir Torston de Royans is know on the borders of England and Scotland as a man of reason, wisdom and great strength. The man he serves, Lord Lionel Harringham that is suffering from dementia and believes himself to be the Great Caesar and Sir Torston is his great Centurion. This alone makes for everyday life to be one of make believe and adventure. Then there is Lady Alyx de Ameland, a young lady from an allied family, in love with Sir Torston. But with the Scots raiding the sheep herd, a Scots laird; having an eye on Alyx, nothing goes smoothly. There is more Medieval pandemonium, folly and matrimony on the border and Kathryn knows just how to blend it all together to keep the reader turning the pages; enjoying The Centurion. Thank you for a much-needed Medieval adventure.
This is a fantastic read! Young Lady Alyx has been an ardent admirer of the knight in charge of the castle adjoining her father’s. Sir Torston de Royans is commanding, beautiful, and kind and has doted on Alyx for nine years as she’s grown into womanhood. As of late though, his feelings for her have been evolving into something else, but it’s a bit of a problem. Torston’s father signed a betrothal contract years before to a woman he has only met once. So essentially he’s engaged to another woman.
Alex is aware of this, but persists in her chase of the man she’s loved since her girlhood. Meanwhile, Torston has a bigger issue on his hands. The Lord he is sworn to is a ‘bit off’. Well, this Lord is actually a few sandwiches short of a picnic, and it’s creating a dangerous situation with the constantly warring Scots in the area.
Things become urgent though when Alyx is seen out wandering by a Scottish Laird and suddenly becomes the center of a great conflict.
This story has a terrific plot with twists and intrigue. There is plenty of action and the romance between the two is absolutely lovely. All jests aside, the topic of mental health in a medieval novel was dealt with in an interesting and compassionate manner by the characters as well. I highly recommend this book, as I read it from beginning to end because I just couldn’t put it down.
I like this story, but I wanted more romance between Torston and Alyx. The lack of romance is what had me not so thrilled about this book. However, the twist and turns in the story were exciting, and it was those things that kept me reading. Yes, I wish there was more romance, but I know that the story encompasses so much more than romance; therefore, I think the author did a great job.
