A millennium into the future two advancements have altered the course of human history: the colonization of the galaxy and the creation of the positronic brain. Isaac Asimov’s Robot novels chronicle the unlikely partnership between a New York City detective and a humanoid robot who must learn to work together. Like most people left behind on an over-populated Earth, New York City police … York City police detective Elijah Baley had little love for either the arrogant Spacers or their robotic companions. But when a prominent Spacer is murdered under mysterious circumstances, Baley is ordered to the Outer Worlds to help track down the killer.
The relationship between Life and his Spacer superiors, who distrusted all Earthmen, was strained from the start. Then he learned that they had assigned him a partner: R. Daneel Olivaw. Worst of all was that the “R” stood for robot—and his positronic partner was made in the image and likeness of the murder victim!

Part of Asimov’s Robot reality and worth the read as it also sets up characters for future novels too.
This is the good stuff I have read this at least a dozen times ,a true masterpiece
Asimov classic.
Classic SF and classic Asimov. A futuristic whodunnit that’ll keep you guessing.
A classic marriage of detective story and science fiction. Asimov makes a truly original contribution to the theme of human-robot interaction that has influenced many more books and movies on that theme.
Very out of date with the “future” being the year 2000
A great story by a master author that leaves you wanting more and has your mind exploring the ramifications.
Asimov is the king of robot stories, and this is the best one he ever wrote. And with this novel, he demolished the old chestnut that you can’t write a valid murder mystery in a science fiction setting.
Interesting and a surprise at the end
I thought this and the rest of the Foundation series and the prequels were terrific.
Assmov is one of the greatest science fiction writers ever and this is arguably his most imaginative/realistic book ever. It started a series even better than his Foundation books. I love it.
As always, Asimov is classic sci-fi. I had the pleasure of rereading his robot trilogy 40+ years after first discovering it. After all these years, it’s still as relevant as when it was first written.
Slow, needs to pick up the pace!
Asimov was a great writer…really miss him!
If you love science fiction then you must read this book.
read this book long time ago, but I remember liking it enough that I read the others that where in the series and wishing they would make it into a movie.
It is a Great Classic
Asimov is the best. But in 1952 he thought it would take 1,000 years to get to population 8 billion. Whew,
Loved it. Asimov at his best.
I am a big Asimov fan, and read most of his books (including this one) years ago. I got this for the easier reading on Kindle now that I am (a lot) older 🙂 R Daneel Olivaw (the robot) goes on to visit many of Asimov’s other series as well, and is a marvelous character.
