A millennium into the future two advancements have altered the course of human history: the colonization of the galaxy and the creation of the positronic brain. Isaac Asimov’s Robot novels chronicle the unlikely partnership between a New York City detective and a humanoid robot who must learn to work together. Like most people left behind on an over-populated Earth, New York City police … York City police detective Elijah Baley had little love for either the arrogant Spacers or their robotic companions. But when a prominent Spacer is murdered under mysterious circumstances, Baley is ordered to the Outer Worlds to help track down the killer.
The relationship between Life and his Spacer superiors, who distrusted all Earthmen, was strained from the start. Then he learned that they had assigned him a partner: R. Daneel Olivaw. Worst of all was that the “R” stood for robot—and his positronic partner was made in the image and likeness of the murder victim!

This book is a great classic. A science fiction detective story. Not your typical hero type. Just trying to do his best in an impossible situation. Great fun. Who doesnt want to save the planet?
What can you say about Asimov that hasn’t already been said. I just hope todays AI devices are equipped with the 3 laws of robotics.
Again, twist ending
Am hooked, have to read the entire I Robot series now.
Classical science fiction even more meanginful today as we see many of our jobs being taken away by technology.
Early Asimov. His later ones rock.
One of the GREATS!!!
I read (listen) to this book every few years. It’s great.
great addition to his body of work
Great storytelling. A Sci Fi Classic.
Its been a long time since I’ve read this novel, and it was like re-visiting a cousin or old neighbor. I’ve always thought Caves of Steel was a bit slow – especially at the beginning, but it’s worth the slow build up if you’re going to continue with the rest of the series. And of course I am hooked enough to re-read the other two right away!
Sort of boring. It seemed to drag on
Nobody does science fiction mysteries like Asimov.
Since there were only a few characters the mystery was not too complicated. The most interesting part was a robot as one of the detectives.
If you don’t know Asimov, this is a great intro. If you do, you’ll know how great his robotics (his word) stories are and this is one of two with an unforgettable detective duo
Typical Asimov. Thought provoking ideas, excellent story, but almost juvenile prose style.
A solid mystery, and one of Asimov’s best, this also sets the groundwork for later Robot novels to come.
Old time Sci-Fi by Asimov. Sometimes difficult to catch on to what he is saying. No desire to read the others in the series.
It is Asimov. Not much else needs said!
