When a visiting estate jeweler is found dead, prizewinning reporter Jim Qwilleran and his Siamese cats, Koko and Yum Yum, must do their best to find the purr-petrator in this delightful novel in the New York Times bestselling Cat Who series. As the Highland Games approach, Jim Qwilleran and the citizens of Pickax, Michigan, prepare to celebrate their Scottish heritage with such evens as bagpipe … such evens as bagpipe skirling and tossing the caber. But the traditional revelry is marred by troublesome rumors when a visiting jewelery dealer, renowned for his romantic streak (and his mysterious cash-only policy), is found dead in his hotel room. His assistant is missing—and soon, the winner of the caber-tossing content disappears as well.
Qwilleran and his snooping Siamese are willing to go to any lengths to find the killer and set the town at ease. But first they’ll have to contend with a highjacked bookmobile and an attempted bank robbery. Qwill has a lot of mysteries to sort out—not the least of which is Koko’s sudden interest in photographs, pennies, and paper towels…

This edition of The Cat Who…brings a traveling jeweler to 600 miles north of nowhere and the town is very excited. It seems half the town wants to but what he’s selling and the other half has heirloom jewelry to sell. One thing leads to another and the jeweler is no more. But whodunnit? Enjoy your time reading about the life of Jim Qwilleran, Polly, Arch, Mildred, Chief Brody, Amanda, Lenny and his mother and all the other inhabitants of Pickax as they spend time together and enjoy the Scottish games at the Highlands gathering. Astute Koko and darling Yum Yum are of course key to the story, as they should be.
Meh. The story in this installment was okay (barely okay), but it’s starting to seem too much like Qwill is some sort of king in this community.
Lillian Jackson Braun was a fantastic writer. I own all of her books in this series and highly recommend them for your reading pleasure.
love it
I have read all of Lilian’s Cat Who books. Easy reading. Good plots. Great love of Qwill and his 2 Siamese kitties-Koko and YumYum. Koko seems to always react when there is a murder-then Qwill has to find the murder. scene and solve it-of course with KoKo’s help.
Lillian has passed. She has left us a heart filled treasure. Great reading for a cat lover confined to bed! Very engaging.
Qwill was a crime reporter, so he’s smart and interested in his small rural community. Main interactions are social. Not a romance series.
I learned about Scotland too.
Clever books. Great reads.
I prefer dogs to cats but I did enjoy this series. Story line is relaxing with a cup of your choice. Mine is tea.
Love this book!!! Great read as usual!!
Have read the entire series at least three times. First four in the series were written in the late 1960s. Then the rest from late 1980s, and with a change of location. My only negative is how the author ended the series, but I leave that up to the reader
3 out of 5 stars to The Cat Who Robbed a Bank, the 22nd book in the “Cat Who” cozy mystery series, written in 1999 by Lilian Jackson Braun. In this catscapade (I think I am coining a new word here… probably not), a smooth ladies man or sorts descends on Pickax, taking ladies to tea. It’s not as fun as it sounds… he’s murdered. And his assistant looks guilty. But was it really her? Qwill gets to wear a disguise. The Scottish roots and heritage are in full play, which I love. And the characters all come out for this one. Overall, it wasn’t a favorite in the series. It had a few open plot points and too many disconnects, but it was also strong with the humor, characters and connection. So it evened out. The series was just about starting to wind down around here. I envisioned a true bank robbery, but as always, there is a play on words!
I’ve read all of the “Cat Who” books and really enjoy this series. They are a fun and easy read.
This series of books are just pure fun. The names of the people and the places crack me up. I am so sorry that when I get to the last book there will be no more. This woman knew how to tell a story!
Haven’t finished reading it yet. But I like all The Cat books.
Lillian Jackson Braun is the best of all cozy mystery authors (and one of the first to write in this genre). This latter example of the Cat Who series is a pleasure to read, as are all of her books.
lillian Jackson Braun is the best
I’ve enjoyed all of the books in this series so far!
Very easy reading. This book is part of an entire series and enjoy following the different characters, story lines and of course the cats.
My 100 year old Aunt loved these stories and so do I. Fun, easy reading!
Whole series is fun to read. Love the cats and the characters the author populated her imaginary town with.
Love love love this series!
Great series! Love the entire series.
If you love a good mystery with humor (and cats), read anything in this series!
