Governess-turned-sleuth Miss Silver looks into the case of a Holocaust survivor who may have enemies to elude. William Smith isn’t sure what his name is, but he knows it isn’t William Smith. That was the name the Nazis gave him in 1942, when he was herded, along with so many others, into one of their nightmarish camps. They did their best to kill him, but he survived. Now the war is over and … Now the war is over and he’s back in England, ready to start over. But even a man with no past can’t escape history. William may yet learn his real name–but it could cost him his life in this suspenseful mystery starring an investigator who “has her place in detective fiction as surely as Lord Peter Wimsey or Hercule Poirot” (Manchester Evening News).

Miss Silver never fails and this is one of the author’s better books. The man with amnesia, is been done a million times, but the author keeps it interesting and has you staying up late!
I read all the Miss Silver mysteries (I think), and totally love them. This one was particularly good – about a man who lost his memory in the war …
I love Miss Silver! A very original character and the stories never disappoint.
What is it about Miss Silver that makes her soon endearing?
This is a later book in the series of Miss Silver. Miss Silver is a little vague as a character and not very believable, but the quality of the writing is excellent, good character development, good period history, complex story. I particularly liked the originality of the plot – very nice twists. Has a romantic theme so may be appealing to …
Miss Silver is always good to visit with.
I figured out the mystery, but that wasn’t really the point. The evocation of a certain place and time was worth the read.
Love this author, original mysteries solved by an unlikely heroine.
The Wentworth books are light and cozy but full of atmosphere and sense of place and time. I like that Miss Silver is not the central character in each book but, rather, called in well after the other characters have been introduced and the mystery established. The recurring character of Frank Arnold is also a plus. Very readable.
Kept me wondering! Good book.
Post WW II in England, told with wonderful details of life in that era. Entertaining on any levels. Miss Silver & Miss Marple are sisters under the skin.
I have loved every one of Ms. Patricia Wentworth’s books! Very good read!!
Wonderful cozy romance set in England.
After accepting the premise, it’s a great mystery, taking place after World WarII. I enjoyed the mannerisms remembered from my childhood, and felt that the characters acted appropriately to the times.
I like Miss Silver, but this in not her best.
It is interesting to read books written right after World War II and I always like the Miss Silver mysteries.
For those like me who enjoy old village type mysteries from the early 20th century in England, this is a fun read. Miss Silver and Miss Marple could be sisters.
a little slow, but basically an enjoyable read
Miss Silver books are always a treat, and this one is no exception.
