Would you choose to live forever, if you could? Penny Banks, PI and amateur witch, is feeling a bit overwhelmed. She’s studying magic along with her knitting circle, and the Water Spell proves difficult to master. The spell directions don’t make sense, she’s not sure where to get a chalice, and her cauldron is filled with moldy bananas. On top of that, things with her boyfriend, vampire Max … boyfriend, vampire Max Shire, are not going great. He wants her to become a vampire, but is she ready for that? Living forever seems like a lot of work…
It’s a good thing she has a case to distract her from her personal troubles! A teen in town has gone missing, and his mother is sure he was kidnapped. Penny’s happy to take the case…. Can she solve it?

Penny grows so much!
This installment had a different tone. Where the previous books have all been lighthearted with a little depth added, this one was very deep with a little lightness added. Totally different and totally amazing!
And that ending! Wow. Wow wow wow. It moved me, it really did!
Like I said, this one was more serious: it deals with a very serious problem. But also: Penny has to reach deep within herself. And we all know Penny is NOT good with emotions, normally. But she has to dig deep and find a way. Because emotions are super important when using magic. It’s not smooth sailing, this one. Emotions, mistakes, doubts. And meaningful: Penny grows so much! And very suspenseful at the end. Yet another fantastic book!
WOW! Chris is going to loose his marbles!
Well that was just fantastic! I just turned the last page and l feel like l could pick up penny’s broom and fly myself. The ending left me on a real high, l’m going to be thinking about this book all day.
This series of books are Soooooo good. You have to read them in order, well you don’t have to but it would be perfect if you did. Recommended reading.
This is a wonderful series that just keeps getting better. I suppose it’s because we get to know the characters better in every book. I love following along as they strive to become witches. All of the spells and preparations are such fun while also making you think. Very entertaining with all of the familiars too. Love the relationships between all of them. Can’t wait to read the next in the series.
I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
Penny Banks puts on her big-girl panties & hits her stride — as a witch, as a P.I., and comes to terms with her past and her future!
The Water Spell is another big challenge for the Terra Coven and Knitting Circle. To accomplish it, Penny has to deal with her abandonment issues over the father she’s never met. She’s also investigating her biggest case yet, and even her ex, policemen Chris, compliments her work and adds he’d like to start dating her again. And then there’s handsome vampire, Max, her current boyfriend, who wants her to make a long-term commitment. Like vampire long!
This book really demonstrates the progress that Penny and her friends are making in learning to be witches and in their personal lives. It’s great reading — the best book yet in the series — with well-developed characters and plot. Of course, there are lots of laughs along the way. I enjoy this author and am glad we found Hillcrest together!
A lot happens in this book! It is a wild and crazy ride! I love how impetuous Penny is, how without thought for herself when she knows someone is in danger. I enjoyed the casting of the water spell! I really look forward to further adventures!
I know I’ve said it before but this series just gets better and better. Not only does Penny have another case to solve, but we also learn more about her personal life, and unresolved issues she has. And someone she never met comes back into her life, along with a surprising revelation. I don’t want to give too much away. The book is so good. So many changes happen in this book for Penny, that I can’t wait to see what happens next. A must read!!!!!!!
It’s more like 4 1/2 stars almost 5 but a few things annoyed me. I have to say this is the best book so far out of this series. I think I like the whole witch part more then case in this book. The Water Spell is an emotional spell and Penny really goes through the ringer with emotions in this book. It was finally time for her to learn a lot of things about herself and about some other people too. The case was interesting and Penny is getting better at the PI business too bad the police department can’t say the same.
*I received a free copy of this book via the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.*
Another wonderful book in this series. Penny is a amazing character.
I love reading books by Author Amorette Anderson.
I’m so excited that Penny finally got to meet someone important to her (no spoilers!). I was also relieved about the mention of the house at the end – I wondered throughout the entire book why there was no mention of it since that’s where the last book ended. I liked the fact that Penny stood up for herself with Max, rather than just giving in to what he wanted. As a people-pleaser myself, I know how difficult that was for her. I’m not sure how I feel, however, about the shift in their relationship. I guess time will tell. I enjoyed this book. I think it was funny to see Cora experiencing the often-disconcerting effects of pregnancy, and I can’t wait to meet her babies (puppies?)! I liked the soul searching Penny did in this one – as always, it was a gentle reminder that the healing each of us needs to experience must come from within ourselves, not from others. Thank you for the gentle reminder.
How can you improve on perfection? Silly, I know, but true nonetheless. I just love this series of books! The author’s imagination is wonderful and each book blends in smoothly with the next. The bonding of the main characters is wonderful and they have become a well-balanced team who move together in perfect synchronicity. Great friendships, great world building and good vibes all around! What more could a reader ask for?
Penny Banks is a bright young witch in training. She is also a private investigator. Usually the spell she is training for directly ties into the case she is working on. This book is very interesting in that aspect and we learn many new things about her. I love the whole series, and recommend to anybody that loves cozies.
I received this book as an arc and I’m leaving an honest review
Penny Banks private investigator and witch in training is hired by an upset mother to find her son which she feels has been kidnapped but who the police say is willingly with his father. In addition she is trying to learn a difficult water spell. A drug dealer is killed in an alley and reporter claims to have witnessed the murder. Are these things connected? With the help of her knitting circle coven and her delightful cat familiar Turkey begins an enjoyable story. I have read all of the books in the series and this is my favorite one so far. I received an ARC copy and this is an honest and voluntary review.
The Water Spell has a lot of surprises
Penny and Turkey are a great team. The familiars are getting to know each other and developing their own skills. This is an amazing story. It has lots of twists and turns. Each person is well developed and plays an important part in the story. Marley and Annie demonstrate some of their talents at designing. Cora has been craving sweets. The babies are already affecting her life and she is 5 months pregnant. Penny’s investigative skills are growing. I’d say she is no longer an amateur private investigator. I loved this book.
OH MY GOSH!!! This book had me on the edge of my seat. I love this series, and this book was off the charts 🙂
So many new experiences for Penny in this book, and Turkey really sort of behaved a little and helped Penny.
A little bit of relationship drama went on, a shocking new connection, and holy cadoodles.. so much more.
I lost sleep so I could finish the book in one sitting hahahahaa.
Bravo Amorette!! Best one yet 🙂
This series just keep getting better and better! I love how Penney has grown. The way she is behaving now finally has me seeing her as the adult she is. The growth that she went through for the water spell was intense. The way she was more focused on her case of Benton missing and finding out how it all connected to the murder of Whitey, a drug dealer, was very impressive, too. Usually it was all about ‘Penney’, but not this time. I loved it! It improved her relationship with Max and I think the Coven is stronger now. I loved the surprises at the end, very surprising!
Love this series! Novice witch and PI Penny Banks solves another murder mystery, but the best parts of this book are the insights into Penny’s personal past and her possible future with Max. Interactions with her coven/knitting club and her cat familiar Turkey were fun as always. You won’t be disappointed! I received an ARC Of this book and I’m leaving an honest review. Each book gets better!
Each book is this series is wonderful. Each spell is a life lesson for us all to learn. The water spell is clarity for me. I honestly think that we could do the spell and lean something, won’t gain magick as they do in the book . However, what we will gain is priceless. I have even asked the author of the possibility of putting the ASBW into a book for us.
Congratulations to CORA on her pregnancy. You can do it and Silas will be there too. Congrats to Penny for gaining some clarity too. I miss reading what each character learned from the spell.
At this point , you will need to read some of he previous books to understand what is going and see the character development. Author writing is wonderful.
Now I have looked at the reviews (to help me write mine since I think I suck at them). Every one is loving the book and the growth of the characters. I do not disagree.
However, and remember this is my honest opinion, I felt that Penny should have been able to solve her current case easily. I had what happened early from the start, I just needed the clues for the who did it and they were obvious. Where was Turkey, her familiar in all of this? He usually acts as her balance or opposite of her character. He just kind of disappeared on that. I know he would have made the conclusion I did early on also.
I get the ending of the book. especially with what happened. However, I felt that the ? was not an option but forced. The other surprise, I also figured that was the case there. Surprised at the connection but as Penny says Max had a vision. Does that make the other person her cousin? Remember, these are just my opinions.
This is my honest and freely given review. I did receive an ARC book.
OMG!! I love this series Amorette’s. She never steers is wrong. Her writing is captivating and grabs my attention immediately. Because of all the details and descriptions of everything, I can picture everything clearly in my head. It’s suspenseful, sad, happy and very funny.
Spoiler Alert!!
Especially the part where the women dress up as witches and ones rides off on a broomstick with everything on! Halloween in the truest of forms! I laughed so hard.
The spells keep getting better and better as the Terra Coven strive to become “real” witches. Private investigator Penny Banks is approached by Lauren Phillips to find her son Benton who she feels has been kidnapped. Penny thinks the teenager may have just gone to California to stay with his Dad for awhile.
In the meantime Raj “Whitey” White has been found shot in the alley by Hadley Wilder, a reporter for the Hillcrest Crier. Hadley claims she saw Lighting Strike Lou Kilmore shoot him.
When Penny tries out the newest ice cream flavor from the Hillcrest Market, she learns that Hank Holcomb (brother of Police Chief Holcomb) and his wife Portia have been dealing drugs out of the market. Their main rival in the drug trade was Whitey.
The Terra Coven consisting of Annie Wright, Cora Switchback, Marley Greene and Penny are on the eighth cycle of 13, the Water Spell. Through the Water Spell they must think about what has happened in their past that could cause problems in their present and future. Penny wonders about her Dad abandoning her as a child.
I have grown to love the characters and their familiars in this series.
What has happened to Benton? Did Lou actually kill Whitey or was it someone else?
The surprise endings in The Water Spell will knock you off your feet. A must read!!!!
I received an ARC copy of this book and loved it!! Penny and her knitting group of friends are learning to be witches ‘ They have mastered 7 steps and are now on number 8 the water spell and Penny does not understand what the book is trying to tell her, when she masters it she has alot more power and knows more about herself. A young women hires Penny to find her teenage son who she is sure was kidnapped. Penny solves the case and finds the missing teenager but she didn’t bring any backup. The culprit shoots her. She is dying when Max (her vampire lover) finds her, He tells her the only way to save her life is by turning her into a vampire, Will she do it?The ending answer alot of questions and leaves me waiting to grab the next
