Are you afraid of speaking up? When Penny Banks, amateur PI and witch-in-training, is asked to be on a talk show she gets a serious case of the butterflies. She hopes that the Voice Spell might help, but it calls for naked chanting under a full moon. Yikes! She’s not quite ready for that. As she tries to find a loophole in the spell, a body turns up in the creek that runs through town. Penny has … runs through town. Penny has to put her magical studies on pause while she gets busy investigating the crime.
The Hillcrest Police Department isn’t happy to have Penny, her cat Turkey, and her witchy, knitting friends poking around the crime scene.
Can Penny gather enough clues to solve the case before the police? Will she learn to use her true voice while she’s at it?

Out of this world!
Oh, my witch. Just when I thought this series couldn’t possibly get any better, because it already deserved 10 stars, this installment topped that! Out of this world! I can’t even find the superlatives anymore to describe it. Enough said, I think. Only problem was: it ended! I was trying to read slowly so I wouldn’t get to the end so fast, but that proved to be impossible.
Penny is on her way to becoming a very powerful witch, but she’s not flawless and I love that. She’s blunt at times, socially awkward, uncoordinated, not always willing to study. It makes her all the more real and endearing. And she IS funny, caring, determined, and a good friend. It’s so exciting to follow Penny on her path of change. It’s such a pleasure to see her grow. She does still need her fake glasses to make her feel smart. Or at least she THINKS she needs them. But she is going to have to realize that it comes from within her. She has to find her courage, her voice.
This new case is extra difficult, because Penny has been ordered by the police not to interfere in their investigation. Penny’s hands are now tied, but she wouldn’t be Penny if she wouldn’t try! She does what she can. So, there is a murder case, but there are also pesky goblins trying to enter the Earth Realm. They’re driving Penny and her Coven crazy!
Turkey is so cute. He’s doing crossword puzzles now too. He’s so accomplished! Turkey might even be a better PI than Penny is, although when it comes to action, he wishes he’d be a little braver. He’s so scared of Marley’s owl familiar! Turkey is slowly getting used to Max although he is still not a fan. And yes, I know he doesn’t like being called Turkey! He prefers Thomas, or even Your Highness, but he’ll always be Turkey Werky to Penny.
This book was excellent as was her other books. I found this book funny, witty, easy to read and it was also a page turner. I look forward to reading her next book. I recommend this book very highly. The best thing is anyone can read this book. I suggest you read it it. I loved the fact that the book was entertaining and whimsical too.
““Remember what Theodore Roosevelt said?” Cora says. “Speak softly but carry a big stick.” “I think we have to speak with authority, and align our actions to our words,” Annie says.”
Set in the quirky world of birdwatching, the Earth Coven members, especially Penny Banks land smack in the middle of the death of a famous birder. Was it an accident? Why aren’t those closest mourning his death. Why is the “voice spell”so wordy. And just what is Turkey doing taking classes at Harvard?
Actions mirror concerns, and Penny can’t shake that Patrick Puffin’s widow and his minions aren’t acting like people who just lost their leader. It was obviously a murder. Who might benefit most? Having been requested to NOT investigate by the Hillcrest police, Penny’s puzzler brain can’t help but try to figure it out. It can’t all be about a birder “life list” can it?
Penny and the coven are back in the 6th of the Hillcrest Witch series. I have come to care for each of these women and have happily cheered each time one of them faces down an obstacle and moves forward. Embarrassed by the way the Voice Spell instructions are presented, they miss the knowledge within, until it clicks, and then, like other times, we see just how powerful magic can be. In the meantime, try Annie’s new cinnamon rolls and settle in to a great edition to the series! Highly Recommended 5/5
The ladies are growing into their new selves.
After several months of studying witchcraft, the ladies have learned they cannot take shortcuts. It’s wonderful to watch them grow and mature. To see them taking responsibility for the coming and going of off-world visitors is just heart-warming. I love this series! It’s one of the best series of cozies I’ve ever read! Fantastic author!
This had some seriously funny laugh out loud moments! I really enjoy reading about how Penny and her coven are growing with their powers. I love reading this series!
Another fun story in the Hillcrest Witch series. Glad to see Penny starting to act like an adult. Love the characters, the goblins were a nice twist. Anne, Marley and Cora are wonderful. The pains and trials the 4 women go through and the interactions of their familiars are very entertaining. There is so much humor in this book that I cannot put it down. The knitting that the women do when they are together is a nice twist in the series. It makes it more realistic. I have purchased this book through kindle unlimited because I love the series.
I love this series, and with each book you get some insight into real life and learning.
This book has Penny and the rest of her little coven finding their true voices.
Penny goes through a bit of a rough patch dealing with her self confidence, and it brought tears to my eyes reading.
You know a story is captivating when it can evoke real emotion from the reader.
Bravo Amorette! Another wonderful story
Awesome book!
Received this ARC and am leaving an honest review.
Once again Penelope is into a mystery and this time there is a goblin in it!! The new spell is a of course The Voice Spell. Will she solve the Patrick mystery and the voice spell? How is she to do these? Once again this is a must read book!! Fact is the whole series is a must read! If you like humor with your mystery with loveable characters… You have found your book!
This is the sixth in this series and, in my opinion, the best so far! I love how the author describes characters and their interactions with other characters in the stories. You never know which direction Penny and her friends are going to be forced to go but you know it will be fun and entertaining making you turn the pages to see what they have gotten into this time! These can stand alone but are much better to fill the series in order. You won’t be disappointed! I can hardly wait for the next book in this series!
Penny and Turkey have wormed their way into my heart. They are very endearing characters. Penny matures greatly by the end of the story.. The voice spell had to be done individually. After great thought she understands it and performs magically. Even though these spells are very much life’s lessons to be learned, they are told in an entertaining and bewitching way. I was given a copy of this book and it is an honest review.
Another great book in this wonderful series about Penny and the girls! They must deal with annoying goblins, Penny has to decide if she wants to go on a talk show in another realm, and of course they have to learn a new spell! These girls and their familiars keep you laughing and turning the pages. I received this book as an ARC and this is my honest opinion of it. I can’t wait for the next in the series!!
Mary Brent and Suzie Allen, owners of Dune House Bed and Breakfast, are visited by Hannah, the owner of a new restaurant in Garber, Pelicans on the Pier, they wonder if a restaurant that has guests sit around a table with strangers and all eat the same food, can survive in their small town of Garber. When a stranger in town, Jerome Poole, a private investigator, eats at the restaurant and dies of an apparent poisoning in front of the restaurant, Detective Jason Allen, sets to work on the list of suspects.
Could it be Travis Parker, the owner of a local hardware store, who had an altercation with Jerome at Cheny’s Restaurant the night before? Maybe Chef Cody Shouder at Pelicans who has a past with the law. Or is it Ginger, one of Mary and Suzie’s guests, who has worked with this particular chemical/poison in her job? Maybe it is Marco Cheney, owner of Cheney’s Restaurant, who doesn’t want the competition in town. Or it might be Jerome’s newest case following Freddy Manchester, a suspicious stranger who has been walking the docks that has a link to the Mennossi Crime Family in New York.
The characters are great in this series. There are lots of twists and turns in the book that will keep you reading until you have completed it.
I received an advance copy of this book. This is my honest review.
Great story
I loved the originality of the spells, and the “other realm”. It was also quite amusing and I often smiled or laughed. The original drawings added a lot to the feel of the story for me.
This book was one of the best in the series so far in my opinion as there finally seems to be a major breakthrough with Penny in her understanding of things with the witch thing and life in general (I just hope she maintains the changes as she always seems to lose some of it in the next book…). Things did start out a little slow for me, but there were some pesky goblins that brought in some extra humor, and they turn out to be an important part of the story. The end also had some ironic coincidences, but I could overlook that. We’re getting pretty far in the series now and in the covens’ witch studies, so hoping to continue to see major breakthroughs in future books.
I received a free copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily giving my honest review.
What a great series to add to Penny’s journey. Penny has great powers that will lead her to become the witch she wants to be. A must read
Penny Banks and her knitting circle are trying to understand and master the Vision Spell in the latest chapter of the ASBW to become witches.Patrick Puffin an expert bird watcher comes to town to lecture on the American Dipper and is instead murdered. Penny tries to solve the murder and at the same time stop an invasion of Goblins. As usual she is helped by her familiar cat Turkey who is an enjoyable character is given a bigger part in each book.A very enjoyable book. I was given an ARC copy of the book and is giving an honest and unbiased review of the book.
So, this continues the same fabulous traits that we love in this series: a hilariously skatterbrained heroine, a fabulous stream of consciousness narrative, and brilliant characters. A bird watcher named Dr. Puffin… I mean, come on! But as lighthearted as most of the book is, there are some absolutely exquisite moments near the end that break your heart, when all seems lost and futile. And then, THAT ending. Loved every moment.
I just love this series of books. Each one keeps getting better and better.
Penny and her friends are such wonderful characters.
Wonderful book, I loved it.
I truly loved Voice Spell! One thing that really makes this series wonderful (other than His Majesty Thomas Edison Fullbright, of course), is the insightful observations about human nature. I love how most of the spells can’t be completed without the witch looking inside herself and recognizing something about herself that she needs to work on. I think most of us are plagued by the same fears and insecurities that Penny and the coven are, and that makes it so easy for readers to relate to them. I think, in reading these books, I’m also looking inward and learning something about myself – I’m not sure I’m going to be able to fix the issues, but at least I’m now more aware of them. That’s a win, right? In this book, I really loved the analogy of the shaving man – it was very clever and very true. Well done!
