I read book one and HATED IT. It is listed as a K9 book but accept for her patting Angel’s head, her continued remarks of the bullet he took, Cookies treats, THE DOG IS NOT A DETECTIVE HELPING ANYTHING. he is her PET. Not a all what the book is touted as.
AND YOU CAN NOT LIKE ANY OF THE CHARACTERS. The writing is completely childish. So repetitive chapter to chapter…with stilted, cardboard writing, like a 1st year creative writing student. THERE IS NO DEPTH TO ANY THING IS BOOK 2 – AS NOTHING WAS IN BOOK 1. BUT you can always hope that it gets better…IT DOES NOT.
I am already SICK TO DEATH of the childish way the Countess is described and presented. AND sorry, but she is the most unbelievably written old person I have ever come across AND I AM AN OLD PERSON with friends her age.
The dialogue from her and about her is just again REPETITIVE AND CHILDISH. Takes away from the entire book.
AND WOW…TALK ABOUT INEPT POLICE – FBI – known terrorist poisoners and KNOW THEY ARE GOING TO STRIKE WITH A LETHAL FAST ACTING POISON AND NOTHING IS SHUT DOWN??? NO POLICE OR FBI PRESENCE AT A FESTIVAL SETTING UP BUT THEN THE ONE COPS SAYS WE THINK THEY ARE GOING TO HIT THE ART FAIR – BUT NOT 1 LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENT THERE CHECKING?
A GUY WITH A BASHED IN HEAD IS NOT HARD TO SPOT AND NO ONE IS THERE EVEN LOOKING? AT 2 CREEPY – BY AUTHORS DESCRIPTIONS – GREASY AND SPOOKING GUYS HANGING AROUND????
SO POORLY WRITTEN…
THEN IN 1 PART SLADE MENTIONS THAT DOTTIE WAS SO TIRED SHE IS PROBABLY HOME AND SLEEPING WHEN MIC ASKS ABOUT HER AND THEN THE VERY NEXT SENTENCE HE NOW SAYS – HAVE YOU SPOKEN TO DOTTIE….
DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR YOUR MONEY…because it is a waste of both…total waste of both.
Judith Lucci always manages to engage the reader, and this book is certainly another example of that! Definitely recommend it!
I really get some great hours of reading from Judith Lucci and this just added to it. I loved the interaction between the characters and Ms. Lucci’s writing just brings them to life. The plot is frightening and all so possible in today’s world. If you like strong women and dogs (who doesn’t) you’ll love this book. Add a small touch of humor and you’ve got a winner.
I have found another author to add to my list of authors to keep reading. Always happy when I find a new author.
I love the characters and hope I am as rascally as the Countess when I am her age. Angel can come stay with me anytime.
Even the bad person(s) are well written.
The story is fast moving and easy to read. This is the second in a series and my first book , so it can be read by itself.
Although when I can find time I do plan to catch up by reading the others in the series.
Nicely done Judith Lucci.
Note : This was an ARC and this is my freely and honest review.
Countess Dorothy Borghase, (Dottie), is a hoot! The octogenarian aristocrat is spurred into action when one of her best friends, Camilla, unexpectedly drops dead during lunch at a fashionable Richmond bistro. Suspecting foul play, the Countess badgers her friend, ex-Richmond Homicide detective, Michaela McPherson, into helping her with the investigation. The plot thickens when Camilla’s death is followed by several others, all seemingly unconnected poisonings. Is it a terrorist plot? Or is there something else afoot?
This is a fast-paced, exciting tale of murder and mayhem in the old south that is hard to put down. Lucci’s medical background is apparent in her description of the signs and symptoms exhibited by the victims and in the composition of the poisons themselves. Having worked in the medical field, I enjoy thrillers of this nature (e.g., ‘Coma’ by Robin Cook, etc.) and this is one of the best I’ve read in a while.
‘Dowager’ is the second book in Lucci’s Michaela McPherson Mystery series, but you don’t have to read #1 to enjoy this one! It is a stand-alone mystery.
In summary, if you enjoy a good medical thriller, you don’t want to miss “The Case of the Dead Dowager”. Highly Recommended.
Five big, shiny stars!
