“The dead are restless here…”
Remy is a tour guide for Carrow House, a notoriously haunted building. When she’s asked to host seven guests for a week-long stay to research Carrow’s phenomena, she hopes to finally experience some of the sightings that made the house famous. At first, it’s everything they hoped for. Then a storm moves in, cutting off their contact with the outside world, and … with the outside world, and things quickly become twisted. Doors open on their own. Seances go disastrously wrong. Red liquid seeps from behind the wallpaper. Their spirit medium wanders through the house during the night, seemingly in a trance.
Then one of the guests dies under strange circumstances, and Remy is forced to consider the possibility that the ghost of the house’s original owner, a twisted serial killer, still walks the halls.
But by then it’s too late to escape.

If “cozy horror” is a thing, this is it. Actually, it’s more a supernatural thriller with a touch of mystery. Think Haunting of Hill House or Bly Manor.
The first time reading a book by Darcy Coates and I absolutely adored it. Great page-turner with an unpredictable ending. I cannot wait to read more books by this author.
Whoa!! This was a creepy, atmospheric, chill ride into the ghostly unknown of the Carrow House!
Tour guide, Remy loves taking people through Carrow House explaining things that have happened within its walls as the house is known for being haunted. People from previous tours have literally disappeared through the years or ended up dead. When one of Remy’s tourists (Mark) shows an interest in the house and tells her that he would love to have her host a week long stay for seven guests, Remy thinks nothing of it as she has personally never seen anything happen as long as she has been a tour guide.
The seven guests arrive which includes a psychic medium and a ghost hunter in the mix along with other people that are interested in the ghostly house. Once everyone meets and greets along with picking out the rooms they will be staying in, the house seems to settle down.
There is a storm brewing outside and as it moves toward Carrow House it ends up cutting everyone off from reaching the mainland. The only way across is over a bridge that is constantly being pounded by waves from the ocean.
The house goes into full active mode when the medium decides to conduct a séance and then all hell breaks loose as the paranormal energy increases to the point of slamming doors, breaking glass, footsteps in upper rooms of the house, and apparitions gliding along the hallways. What is haunting Carrow House? Will the guests make it out alive? No spoilers here as you will just have to read the book.
This book was one of the most scariest so far by author, Darcy Coates! The author, captured the ghostly essence of the house and throws the reader right into the haunting. Every emotion of the characters is felt by the reader and the atmosphere of the haunting just stays with you as you read the book! I became so immersed in the book that I felt the dread and trepidation of the characters as they endured the paranormal activity in the house. Chills and thills is the name of the game in this book! This was a classic ghost story and it will be going on my favorites shelf! Awesome job Darcy Coates for scaring the wits out of me! Five stars all the way for this one!
Loved it.
Enjoyable ghost story with a collection of varied characters who were easy to keep straight (unlike some I’ve read in which I’d have stop and ask myself “Okay, which one is this?”), and lots of action.
The Carrow Haunt was a spine-tingling, chilling read that hooked me from the beginning. The more I read, the faster I turned the pages, my heart pounding as I devoured every word. I could feel the chill in the air, the terror permeating the house, and smell the coppery scent of blood as Remy, Mark, Marjorie, Bernard, Taj, Lucille, April, and Piers struggled to not only unravel the mystery of Carrow House but also stay alive.
One of the best horror novels I’ve read in a long time. The Carrow Haunt is a must-read for those who love haunted houses steeped in the darkness of treachery and murder.
Wow, what a fun ghost story!
I’ve been a fan of Coates since reading Craven Manor last October. Being a lover of all things spooky, this book did not disappoint.
Throughout this journey we follow Remy, a tour guide for the Carrow House, a location known for its many years of disappearances and murders. One night on a tour, a man approaches Remy and wants to rent out the entire location for an extended stay for a group of individuals, including her. But when odd things begin to happen, Remy and the others must fight to maintain their sanity and survive.
This book really worked for me, and I enjoyed a great many things about it.
I thoroughly enjoyed the characters. Remy was the perfect choice for a MC. She’s extremely knowledgeable about the property, is intelligent, and has a strong will that’s admirable given the circumstances she finds herself in. While I don’t think she’s the most deep character I’ve ever met, she had just the right amount for the story and it worked.
I can say the same for the other characters as well. They each had distinct personalities that made their interactions and reactions entertaining throughout, and they made the journey fun. My favorite would be Marjorie, because she was something of an enigma and had a lot of mystery built around her and her profession.
If you love ghosts and anything creepy, you’ll love the plot. I love anything supernatural or paranormal, and this satisfied the craving I had for a creepy story. There were plenty of chills and thrills along the way, and a great mystery underneath it all. Was it hardcore horror? No, but it was still ghastly fun in its own way.
Reading this book reinforced my love of Coates’s work, and I’m definitely going to periodically read more of her works. Definitely worth a read!
The Carrie Haunt by Darcy Coates is a good ghost story about a group of people who come together to explore a haunted house, each for their own reasons. There are ghosts, bleeding walls, possession, dead bodies, and evil! A perfect bedtime story!
Fairly predictable, easy to read. The characters are stereotypical (right down to the Poltergeist psychic) but the grammar and editing is good. Often these $0.99 cent finds are a painful struggle to read through: not the case here.
A great ghost story in the spirit of The Haunting of Hell House!
A good plot that keeps you guessing. the characters are all quite individual and you feel you could actually believe they existed. It certainly would be an interesting film .
I went to bed early just so I could get back to reading this book! I’ve always enjoyed the supernatural, but this Darcy Coates has a way of pulling you right into the scene with the characters. Since I tore through this book so quickly, it’s now on to the next!
It was a very entertaining quick read with a good plot.
What a ride! Loved this story from beginning to end. Ok, maybe I did think “deus ex machina” just once, but hey, it’s a haunted house book: unbelievable things are Supposed to happen. If they didn’t, the house wouldn’t be haunted. This absolutely goes on my “favorites/read-it-again” list. Don’t miss it!
Wow…talk about a book to read at night while cuddled up in a chair…you will read this in one sitting as the atmosphere engulfs you. Walk into the old haunted house full of rooms where a serial killer lived and murdered the guests.
Remy loves giving tours here if the weather cooperates, you wouldn’t want to be cut off from civilization.
Mark asks her to host 7 people at Carrow for two weeks, to investigate the home. The author does a terrific job establishing the personalities of each guest. Taj, youtube ghost hunter, April, teen owner of the home and Lucille, her companion, Piers, a retired guy that wants a bit of a thrill, and Marjorie, medium, and her helper Bernard. And then there is Mark, the host, but for some reason, he lets Remy make the decisions.
As doors slam throughout, cold spots, walls leak a red liquid, and odd sounds.
Storm sets in, lights fail, and then the bodies start piling up…..people you like are dead! It felt like Agatha Christie’s book “And Then there were None”…….but the supernatural scares are really vivid as are Marjorie’s seances.
The plot holds together and secrets are ferreted out. Spirits, revenge, closure, ghosts tethered to the home all add to the atmosphere as the waves hit the house and the body count increases. The ending came as a nice surprise as usually they end without resolution for the reader. You can envision yourself walking the halls, feeling the cold dread and fear. Be careful, something is behind you. 5 stars
I was hooked by the very first chapter. The story pulled me right in and I couldn’t put it down.
Darcy Coates is the master of what I call Haunted House “cozies”, like the English village murder mysteries. Good characters and stories, seems predictable but twists that make them fun to read. I never miss a Darcy Coates release!
It was a real page turner for me, I just wanted to know what happened next. Some chapters in the book really unnerved me. I don’t feel like I scare easily but some parts in this book really startled me.
Seriously spooky. I really enjoyed this book. Usually I find Darcy Coates’ ghost stories to be a little superficial. The characters are very well developed. They’re always creepy but I don’t usually get chills while reading them. This one was definitely the best one I’ve read so far. Lots of twists, great atmosphere, characters who have actual lives outside of the haunting.
It has been quite some time since I have read this book, but it seems as though it was fairly interesting.
