This was a great regency book. There were wonderful, strong characters. A good storyline. There was family and love and adventure and peril.
This is my first book in the series, and while it is a good standalone, I think I would’ve benefited from reading the previous Knights League books prior to this one.

Lord Monteforte (“Phillip”) watched two men playing guards, having himself pretended to have drunk too much and playing foolishly so they would let down their guard and ignore him. It just might be paying off for him now, as Lord Thornrake and Lord Stratton attacked each other as one called the other a cheat. That activity gave Phillip a reason for talking to Lord Dayton without a contrived reason, as he had hoped. Feigning a relaxed position, Phillip was delighted when Lord Dayton mentioned a special card game not everyone was aware of that might be of interest to him. Very few are invited to it, he said. After feigning careful consideration, Phillip agreed to join him.
Miss Olivia Spencer was not treated very well by her family relations who took her in after her father died. They definitely made her feel like a burden. Her aunt had made sure her dress was a drab grey and drained all the color from her features. They weren’t openly cruel to her, but they simply didn’t care and made it all too obvious.
At first ball of the Season, a handsome gentleman speaks rudely to Lady Olivia. Phillip, the Earl of Monteforte, is aware of the terrible first impression he made on Olivia, but he has no time to make amends because her uncle, Lord Dayton, has invited him to a card game where more will be going on than just playing cards, and he must stay vigilant as a spy for The King’s League. When secrets do emerge based on the serious nature of what Lord Dayton and Lord Cammish discuss, that the Prince Regent could be in terrible danger, Phillip needs to get the information back to the League and at the same time worries about Lady Olivia’s safety, not realizing he is actually the one in danger! He didn’t want her to think he had drawn close to her just to get to her uncle. Will Olivia stay loyal to her family members, or will she try to protect the man who needs her help?
This is a very intriguing story involving a spy and testing a woman’s loyalty to her uncaring relatives. Would she do what was right? Grab your copy and find out how the plot unravels.
