A strong Captain with devotion for and from his men. A smart woman with a bank to run. The struggle that is in the background that is hard to solve but with help from friends and support the venture is easier to bear.
A great continuation of the series and I love to read them in order but they are also a stand alone book.
This is a fun, quick read. I think the best thing about regencies is the rigid rules of propriety and the fun ways they are observed and broken. Sara did a great job weaving in some historical information while maintaining a light-hearted prose and dialogue.
Lucy is a recent heiress but her fortunes hang in the balance of maintaining her grandfather’s banking patrons. When her biggest client threatens to remove his holdings, Lucy has to find a way to keep his loyalty. She leaves for a house party to find Captain Sharpe and secure her future.
When you read a lot of romance novels like I do it’s hard to find one that is unique and refreshing, with characters that you truly want to see have a happy ending, and that is exactly how I felt when I read The Captain’s Lady. Charm radiates through this book from the first page to the end. Strong and unique leading characters with humble hearts quickly win you over and makes the story breeze by in a delightful haze.
The chemistry between Lucy and Jack is evident from their first humorous chance meeting and throughout every witty conversation, the banter charming. Lucy Brook is a rare gem in this era, being a strong-willed and independent woman in a position of power, with a good head on her shoulders, and Jack does nothing but support her, which goes against the opinions of almost every man in that time period. That fact was just one of the pieces of this story that won me over.
A house party with an uncommon twist, a cast of characters that are easy to become enchanted by, and a sweet tale that was over way too soon, The Captain’s Lady captured my heart and imagination.
Overall, I enjoyed reading this book. It held my attention well and the characters seemed developed enough to feel their emotions. I also liked the gentle development of the romance and how Lucy tried to take the high ground in the relationship.
However, I see a plot hole with Jack and the bank. How could he not be aware of what his secretary was doing? Other than that, the historical elements of the Royal Navy were a bit hard to take, but history can be harsh.
Romance – PG / kissing
Language – PG / clean
Violence – referenced execution, fist fight, referenced knife, referenced flogging
My rating – 4 stars
It’s no secret that I love a good, sweet Regency romance, but I love elements that make the story unique and this one delivers on all counts. Lucy is a competent and successful darling, but she’s not your typical debutante. She owns and runs a bank. She chases down Captain Jack, who isn’t your typical seaman, in an effort to save her business, and the sparks fly when the worlds of these two individuals collide.
House parties are so fascinating to me and I enjoyed the setting for this burgeoning romance immensely. I loved the driven and determined characters and eagerly anticipated any and all interactions, especially the ones of the romantic variety.
This is my first book by this author and it won’t be my last. I love the writing style and the way I was engaged from start to finish.
Content: mild romance

The Captain’s Lady was amazing!! I loved getting to know both Captain Jack Sharpe and Ms. Lucy Brooks. The first two chapters are the perfect setup for the reader to get to know a bit of their background stories (and know that they’re perfect for each other), and the third chapter finally gives us their meet-cute (and it was so great! It certainly left me giddy and wanting to find out more about these two together). I certainly enjoyed getting to know them and seeing them getting to know each other (and appreciate each other qualities, strengths, and weaknesses).
5 stars and completely recommended!!
I love when I find a new author who has a wonderful writing style that can bring the emotions and feelings of the characters off the pages and into your life.
Lucy had inherited the bank from her grandfather at a time when women did not work in that sort of industry. She was fighting an uphill battle to save the bank when Captain Jack Sharpe’s secretary came to inform the bank that he would be moving his substantial fortune to another bank. She was determined to try an convince him to keep his money with them and thereby save the bank. Her brother-in-law managed to secure an invitation for her to a house party that Captain Sharpe would be attending. That was her in. All she needed to do was convince him of her integrity and good business sense.
Captain Sharpe was a regular sailor who had worked his way up to captain. He wasn’t a believer in love. His experience had taught him that women only wanted a man’s money, not the man. When he met Lucy Brook, he saw something different in her. She was kind, trustworthy and beautiful and an heiress in her own right. She didn’t need his money and she seemed to see him for the good man that he was.
Would Lucy’s secrets stay hidden or would they destroy what might have been a love match?
This is the third book I have read in this series and I have enjoyed each one. This was a clean story with no foul language and sexual content. There was plenty of subtle chemistry that kept me intrigued and wanting to know more of their story.
I was given an arc copy of this book and I willingly offer my honest review.
This was a really good book!! I loved the Lucy and Jack’s story, and especially loved that Lucy was doing something not many women had been trusted to do!! I like that she also met someone else doing the same thing, and had added being a wife and mother!! Lucy discovered she, too, could do that, if she’d let herself!! With Jack there, it all fell into place!! I hope to read more of Jack and Lucy’s story in future books! This was the first book in this series that I’ve read, and it was great as a stand alone. I don’t feel like I missed a thing!!
I received an advance copy of this book, and was not required to leave a review. The opinion expressed is strictly my own.
Lucy Brook isn’t your ordinary Regency lady. She’s an heiress and owns a bank, which very few women did at that time, but she’s got a big problem. Lucy’s about to lose the bank’s biggest customer to another bank, and she only has two weeks to get him to change his mind, so she gets an invitation to the Garvey’s house party to do just that.
Captain Jack Sharpe didn’t buy his commission, he worked his way up through the ranks and is well respected. He’s only at the Garvey’s house party to try and convince men of influence to help with a naval matter he feels somewhat responsible for. He didn’t foresee meeting an intriguing woman such as Lucy Brook.
Regency House Party is such a fun series, and this is an interesting story–different than the house party stories so far. I loved that Lucy’s grandfather recognized her talent with numbers while she was young and left her his bank when he died. Besides their awkward meeting which I found hilarious, one of my favorite scenes was when Lucy, her sister and Captain Sharpe went into town to shop and they had Lucy add up the cost of items in her head.
I liked Jack Sharpe. He wasn’t from a privileged background and I feel that helped him relate to the men on his crew. I felt he was too hard on himself and was happy to see him write the letters on behalf of those men himself. I liked that Lucy and Jack got to know each other first before business got in the way and caused problems.
This is my first book by this author and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
While I’m glad I wasn’t a guest at the Garvey’s house party (with my luck Mr. Garvey would have been gone the days I was there) I’m so happy I get to enjoy it through Lucy and Jack. Sara Cardon brings us strong characters and a slightly different story line. I totally enjoyed this book. This is the first book by Ms Cardon I’ve read but I look forward to the next one.
I loved reading a regency era book that had a woman in a position of power. I loved that the people surrounding her were supportive of her in difficult circumstances. Not very often you get to read about regency men with feminist kinds of views. All of this made the book feel very different from other romances. Lucy was a woman in power but not a shrew. In fact she was kind and generous in addition to being intelligent and witty.
Jack experienced some great growth over the course of the book. He lost insecurities and learned that even though he didn’t have a title he could have influence for good.
The romance happens quickly as it must in a short book like this but it didn’t feel rushed to me. It all happened in a matter of days but I totally believed that they had fallen in love that fast.
I think this is my first book by Sara Cardon and I look forward to reading more by her.

I received a complimentary copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
With the title of the book gives you a clue into the direction and ending of the story. However, it wasn’t on the nose and some nice twists had me wondering how the h & H would come about. I thought they had good chemistry. I am enjoying the different author’s perpective of the house party. It’s nice to see reaccuring events in different lights according to the different characters. We get to see a little more of Mr. Garvey’s personality. There’s a little introduction of characters for the next novel. Had good dialogue and the story was written well. This is a new author to me and I would read something from her again.
This was a fun quick read. It had more depth then the last one I read. I liked the heroine in the novel. She is smart and knows her mind and I loved how she stood in her integrity at the end. I also loved our broken hero, he believes he is less and doesn’t believe he has power to change much in his life. I loved that he rose for his negative beliefs about himself and went for want he wanted. I loved that this was so well developed and put together with that bit of history so you got to learn and read a good romance. This is a bit longer then novella length.
A very good entry into this regency house party. I enjoyed the story enough that I finished it in 1 afternoon in between tending 3 rowdy little boys. Captain Sharp is a naval Captain who started as a “Jack-tar” – a commoner who enlisted as a boy. Miss Lucy Brook is a young lady who was raised by her grandfather after her parents died. When he died he left his controlling interest in a bank, which she works in now. She has been labeled as unladylike and some people have questioned the stability of the bank. Capt. Sharp is one of her bank’s larger customers and his new secretary wants to take all the captain’s funds from her bank. So we come to the Brighton house party.
This was a good illustration of how we see or hear things through our own filters and how they can be overcome by combiningu202du202c hearts and minds. The Captain and Miss Brooks had interest and chemistry, with a requisite misunderstanding which is resolved with a happily after. There were a few small editing misses which didn’t distract from the story for this grammar nerd so I can feel
safe giving
The Captain’s Lady by Sara Cardon is a sweet Regency Romance with a deeper message. It’s both witty and gritty. An heiress determined to save her grandfather’s bank and a sea captain desperate to save a few of his fellow naval men from hanging become acquainted at a house party. Will their paths collide and end in demise or will they join forces and find a favorable outcome?
I received an ARC. This is my honest and voluntary review.
I loved this book!! The storyline is unique, and the characters are wonderful. The meet and the second meet were so fun! I loved watching Lucy and Jack grow closer as they saw into each other’s hearts. They are both incredible people, that are even stronger together. I couldn’t put their story down! I can’t wait to see what Sara Cardon writes next!
I received a complimentary copy of the book, which I voluntarily reviewed. I have given my honest opinion.
Loved the story, from the meet cute to the following situations the couple gets into together.
The serious situations they each face are heartbreaking, but interesting.
And the road to their HEA is believable.
