A captain seeking to repair the past and the daughter of a fallen gentleman, searching for a treasure that will change their lives forever. The end of the Napoleonic wars comes as a relief to Caspar Graysmark, but before he can settle into the comfortable life of an English lord he has a duty to the people of France. A treasure lies hidden in the heart of the forest, stolen gold that would save … stolen gold that would save the lives of many who lost everything during the war. In his quest, Caspar stumbles across a hidden cottage in the woods, and a different sort of treasure altogether.
Scarlett, living with her sister and grandmother, belongs nowhere. Her father’s mistakes led to their exile from England and their banishment into the forest. The cold winter months have taken their toll on Scarlett’s spirits and her grandmother’s health. The Englishman who arrives at Scarlett’s door, looking more like a bear than a captain of the British army, reminds her of all she lost to the war.
With winter drawing to a close, Caspar must find the missing gold, but his quest to right the wrongs of war has changed. Can Scarlett let him rescue her, too?
The Captain and Miss Winter is based on the story of Snow White and Rose Red, as recorded by the Brothers Grimm. It is a sweet/clean romance novella, and is Book 2 in a series of Regency retellings. The stories can be read in any order.

Touching story of an English Captain who had returned to France to find valuables that had been hidden during the war. His intention was to distribute the wealth to those who had suffered so much as a result of the war. In his search, he found an elderly English Grandmother and her 2 granddaughters living in the woods with the barest of necessities. Why they are in France, and what had led them to these reduced circumstances is learned in the course of the story. A love story, a spy with uncertain intentions, add interest to the story, making for a surprise at the end. A book that will be enjoyed by all ages.

Love this fun retelling of a rather obscure fairytale!
Based on the Brother’s Grimm tale of Snow White and Rose Red, this is a special treat of a book. I loved how everyone’s name had a special meaning – even the horse! Not only does the story give the original tale a fresh retelling, the characters are fully developed and the scenery is clearly described. I also enjoyed learning a few tidbits of history thrown in for good measure!
Romance – PG / mild kissing
Language – clean
Violence – threats from villain – typical of a fairy tale
My rating – 5 stars
This was a cute but short novella. Caspar had served in France fighting against Napoleon. He is a nice man of good breeding and he comes to a cottage and finds three ladies. They were struggling to survive. He worked around the cottage to help pay for their hospitality. Scarlet Winter is oldest but she is positive in demeanor and smiles a lot. Blanche is a little less positive and then Grandma she just wants to see her girls safe. You can watch the relationship between Caspar and Scarlet grow and flourish.
The writing is smooth, even paced and well thought out. The characters are great and the dialogue fits the story. There are a few twists but it does not take away from the tale. I highly recommend this
book.
I received this ARC from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.
A lovely Retelling! Snow White & Rose Red is probably my favorite of the Grimm Brothers Fairytales. Sally Britton brings the characters to life in this sweet love story. I read it with kindle unlimited & now I’m going to buy it so I have it to read again! Thanks for a wonderful story
I really enjoyed this fairytale retelling! Great characters and love story!
I so enjoyed reading The Captain and Miss Winter. I found it to be clean and well written. I love the way Sally Britton expresses herself, for instance, “Her smile lit up the cottage, but her laugh filled his heart.” I can see, hear, and feel that along with Caspar. Although Scarlett and Caspar were attracted to each other very quickly, their love grew over time. There’s some suspense and a hidden treasure involved in this gentle romance. I received an ARC. I chose to write a review and share my opinion of this sweet romance.
It’s a novella but didn’t feel rushed. Good characters and dialogue. Wonderful writing. I felt immersed in the story and it held my interest well.
I loved the little twists and the hat tips to the fairy tale. My daughter has never liked the Disneyesque princess stories, but has always liked the slightly gritty fairy tales collected by the Grimms brothers and by Andrew Lang.
Snow White and Rose Red is one I remember well.
Probably my very favorite thing is that I’ve never read a retelling of this fairytale. I’m only vaguely familiar with the original. So, for a retelling, it was wonderful.
I do enjoy everything this author writes, and this story was just as good. The descriptions were so wonderful, I really felt like I was there on the dirt floor next to the fire, and looking into a pair of bright blue eyes. And the progression of the relationship was so enjoyable, I’ll be reading this one again.
Clean, with some kissing but nothing more.
This retelling of Grimm’s Rose-red by Sally Britton is a delightful story set in France after the defeat of Napoleon. She has a good plot and characters. You can picture the genteel poverty of the small cabin, Blanche and Scarlett struggle with daily life and Mrs. Michaelson’s quiet acceptance. I totally enjoyed this book.
two lonely people with secrets meet in unusual circumstances. Fairy tale like story of Casper and Scarlett. Good storyline and interesting complex characters. loved the story. Received from the author and this is my honest and unbiased opinion
When I first read the title I thought it would be a story about Snow White. Then when I read the description I thought it was Little Red Riding Hood. I was wrong on all accounts. I haven’t heard of this fairy tale before, but I sure enjoyed this retelling of it. Scarlett and Casper are wonderful people. I loved reading their story and watching their relationship grow. This is a beautiful story.
I have only recently discovered Ms. Britton’s works and have enjoyed reading them. This is a regency era retelling of The Brothers Grimm story of Snow White and Rose Red, a fairy tale I was not familiar with. It is not Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. I had to look this one up to review the story.
I think Ms. Britton did a good job keeping to the original story yet making it different. She gave a believable reason to put three English women in post-war France for an Englishman to find. It was clean, sweet and entertaining. In the brief space of a novella the characters had a convincing insta-attraction that led to falling in love (as opposed to just having insta-love). It was a sweet happily ever after ending.
I enjoyed the first in this series as well so I’m looking forward to reading more.
Sex: a few kisses
Language: no
Violence: threatened with a knife- mild
*I received an advance copy of the book and voluntarily chose to review it.
What a wonderful story! The characters made me smile and drew me into their circle. The story truly captivated me, I couldn’t this book down. I could see the cottage in the forest and even inside the cottage with the fire going. This book appealed to all my senses, I was totally transported. Britton is a excellent story teller!
A delightful story. Miss Winter, her sister and her grandmother live in a remote part of a forest in France. One day an English soldier comes upon their cabin in the middle of winter. He is surprised to find three genteel English ladies living there. Though their clothes are worn and they are struggling he senses some mystery. They allow him to stay but he has a secret of his own. As he helps them out and starts to fall in love with the lovely Miss Winter their secrets can either tear them apart or maybe God put them in the right place at the right time.
