In this charming and poignant debut, one woman’s unconventional journey to finding love means learning to embrace the unexpected.
For Susan Green, messy emotions don’t fit into the equation of her perfectly ordered life. She has a flat that is ideal for one, a job that suits her passion for logic, and an “interpersonal arrangement” that provides cultural and other, more intimate, benefits. But suddenly confronted with the loss of her mother and the news that she is about to become a mother herself, Susan’s greatest fear is realized. She is losing control.
Enter Rob, the dubious but well-meaning friend of her indolent brother. As Susan’s due date draws near and her dismantled world falls further into a tailspin, Susan finds an unlikely ally in Rob. She might have a chance at finding real love and learning to love herself, if only she can figure out how to let go.

The story is interesting, it just took a long time to tell it.
For Susan Green, messy emotions don’t fit into the equation of her perfectly ordered life. She has a flat that is ideal for one, a job that suits her passion for logic, and an “interpersonal arrangement” that provides cultural and other, more intimate, benefits. Susan and her brother have never gotten along but once their mother passes away it gets much worse.
This is a very quirky book. I enjoyed it. It is about the dynamics in family and friendships and love. I had a hard time getting into it but once I did I couldn’t put it down. The last few chapters has many surprises and has a wonderful ending that just makes you smile when you finish it. Thank you Sarah Haywood for sending me a copy of your book. I did enjoy this very much.
Susan is pregnant, unmarried and 45 years old when her mother dies and leaves everything to Susan’s brother. She is a prickly character who lives with lots of rules and expectations. At turns funny and sad, she reminds me of Elinor Oliphant.
Unusual family dynamics and strong personalities made the transformation at the end a surprise
It turned out differently than I thought it would….liked it.
Quirky characters that hook you from the very start. No one is really likable but the main character, Susan, quickly draws you into her world and family struggle over the span of her unexpected pregnancy. Twists and turns you never expect will have you laughing out loud before the end. Yet the book has a deeper lesson that will keep you questioning if our family histories are real or just stories we’ve told ourselves.
Not at all what I expected. The protagonist is a 45 year old pregnant woman who is a bit different. It was a fun read.
I enjoyed this book. Loved the main characters personality and all the quirkiness. Great British humor!
I enjoyed this. Had some unexpected twists and turns, and I love the Brits for their romances that aren’t just about 20-somethings. Entertaining (and not super-reliable) narrator made this stand out.
