Landon Beach’s books are top notch and his third novel, The Cabin, is even more packed with suspense and surprises. I have never been disappointed and again Beach caught my attention from the moment I opened the cover. The reader will be immediately immersed into a tale of intrigue, conspiracy, murder, and espionage. Who can be trusted and who is putting people’s lives and our country at risk? The details about the characters, the setting, and the impending catastrophe were in depth and clear so the audience is in step with every twist and turn. You will be guessing who did it until the end. I urge you to share this book with others because this is one book that shouldn’t be kept a secret!
It was a great book from start to finish. The book reminds me of Tom Clancy’s style with glimpses into the inner workings of the CIA and the counterintelligence world. Although fiction, I feel like I learned something about the vulnerability of our world to the forces of true evil. It was hard not to rush through the book so I plan to read again paying closer attention to the finer details. Nice read.
The Cabin is a great read because you can tell Beach had fun creating it–the crackling action set pieces and sharp characterization that fill his earlier novels are here, but there’s an infectious sense of the veteran writer juggling as many ideas, relationships, fights, and twists as he can hold. The pacing is excellent, and Beach is able to give depth and detail to each character’s experiences while keeping up several suspenseful timelines. The Cabin has Vietnam War anguish, a digest history of Lake Ontario, Joseph Conrad and Samuel P. Huntington, a marriage combusting in the driveway, armed robbery disasters, a kayak showdown, a bowling showdown, born-again/burnt-out cops in trouble, lots of love for Detroit, SEALs pumping hot lead all over a doomsday hangar, “The Christmas Waltz” in Manhattan, and Beefy Leg Billy Karpowski kicking the bucket in front of his cheering fans. I had to read chunks aloud to whoever was around–it’s sharp and hilarious and devastating, and every scene is in focus.
Landon Beach stories are the best and this latest might top the list! The Cabin is a must read. It is an incredible mosaic of intrigue, suspense, and rich human connections. I could not put this book down – the fascinating characters and captivating plot takes you on a remarkable journey from cover to cover. Highly recommend!
Landon Beach has done it again! The Cabin hits all the right notes and is a page turner like his first two books. It’s a great beach read or anytime read! Check it out!
