He hid the old pencil-drawn map for 40 years. The guards never found it.After 40 years in San Quentin, Luke Palmer leaves with a state-issued suit, $100 dollars to buy a bus ticket, and a map that will lead to a promise and into the heart of a dark forest. “The Butterfly Forest is a high-octane thriller that is part mystery, part love story, and full bore great storytelling that you’ll think about … storytelling that you’ll think about days after you’ve left the woods.”
– John Davenport (Orlando, FL)
College graduate student Molly Monroe is about to release rare butterflies not far from where the FBI used 4,000 bullets in a shootout to kill Ma Barker and one of her gangster sons in 1935. Molly snaps a picture that will frame something she never sees coming.
Sean O’Brien does see something — a predator. Between the sea of cars in a Walmart parking lot. Walking quickly. Stalking two women.
As O’Brien tries to prevent the abduction, he opens the door to a new relationship. And he opens a dark door to a horror that is secluded within the forest. He follows veiled tracks that lead him farther into the woods where an evil from the past intersects with a frightening presence to form a volatile trap with only one way out.
“ABSOLUTELY MESMERIZING!!!!!”

This actually gave a great feel for the area it is set in, the forest, wildlife and characters. The story line is original, the characters are original and it moves quickly and pulled me in. The end comes together well to a satisfying conclusion
Like main character
I really enjoyed reading this wonderful book – learned a lot about Florida, thenational forest and its natives, and the characters added to the wonder scenery you could so ealily depict from the descriptions. Thanks for the book
The plot for the story is very interesting and sits in a non-fiction set of facts. It is well-developed from a set of “what-ifs.” Mystery and cunning all wrapped into one.
Enjoyed reading the book. It was a thriller. Easy reading.
I wish I could say maybe to recommending this book. The story plot is good, but the execution is poor. Characters need more depth and spending so much time describing what they are wearing is just bad filler. It’s not just the clothing, but some of the other descriptions were over the top. Like the snail trail. Okay, so the bullet went …
The character development made them believable and got me involved with caring about them. Even Luke Palmer who was released from prison after 40 years made me want him to live out his life enjoying the beauty he found in the forest. It tied up all the loose ends and I liked that because some of the other books I have read get you very involved …
Loved this book, couldn’t put it down.
suspenseful
Set in northern Florida; 1st person thriller. Lots of action; high body count. Love interest resolution is very predictable and therefore a throwaway element. Not very realistic overall.
Good read but somewhat predictable plot.
Hard to put down. Spooky and realistic. Scary to think it might actually happen
Generally enjoyable but often stuck in time and repetious.
This book needed lots of careful editing!
A fun light read for thriller lovers like me.
A good book…you can’t predict the ending.
Every parent’s dread. Has you guessing to the end.
It was one of the best books I have read in a while. It was interesting and informative. I look forward to reading more by the same author.
The premise of the book is interesting and scary – considering that the technology exists, it follows that some warped individual or group could actually do this. Can’t wait for the second book, No spoilers here – you’ll have to read it. If you like mysteries that are original and have a bit of a twist, you will probably like this.
I did not particularly like this book. For me there were too many characters involved that could have been left out for a better story, that did not ramble as much. Sorry
