#1 New York Times, USA Today, and internationally bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout returns to the world of the Lux with The Burning Shadow, the steamy, shocking second installment of the Origin series that will leave readers reeling. When Evelyn Dasher crossed paths with Luc, she was thrown headfirst into the world of the Lux–only to discover that she was already far more involved in … already far more involved in their world than she ever suspected.
Because the Luxen aren’t the only ones with a hidden past. There’s a gap in Evie’s memory, lost months of her life and a lingering sense that something happened, something she can’t remember and nobody is willing to tell her. She needs to find out the truth about who she is–and who she was. But every answer she finds only brings up more questions.
Her search for the truth brings her ever closer to Luc, the Origin at the center of it all. He’s powerful, arrogant, inhumanly beautiful, extremely dangerous…and possibly in love with her. But even as Evie falls for him, she can’t help but wonder if his attraction is to her, or to the memory of a girl who no longer exists.
And all the while, a new threat looms: reports of a flu-like, fatal virus that the government insists is being spread by Luxen. A horrifying illness that changes whoever it touches, spreading panic across a country already at its breaking point.

So much happened!
The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance:
Heat/Steam:
Story/Plot:
World building:
Character development:
The setting: Earth
The Hero: Luc – One of the few “Origins” in existence. Origins are the result of a pregnancy between a Luxen (alien) and a mutated human. Humans become mutated with alien genetics after an alien heals them. Origins are stronger than Luxens.
The heroine: Evie/Nadia – Nadia and Luc were together until right after the Luxen invasion when Nadia was dying of cancer. The Daedalus project (experiments on Luxen, creating Origins, all kinds of bad things) came up with a cure, but along with the cure came a high fever that destroyed her memories. Luc got Nadia the cure but agreed not to see her unless she came to him, which she did in The Darkest Star. Though she was now known as Evie.
The Love Story: Luc has always loved Nadia and loves Evie. Evie has been falling for Luc despite the fact that he is an Origin but is afraid that Luc is in love with Nadia and she is no longer Nadia.
The story sort of started out slow with not much happening in the first 30% or so, but then it got very interesting. There was a lot of action and surprises revealed. There seems to be some kind of group (government or otherwise), that has an evil agenda for our couple and their friends. The world building continued to be great in this book as in the last. I really liked that Evie and Luc and the group of friends that they hang around. Some are Origin, some Luxen and some humans.
Then there is Evie/Nadia, we don’t know exactly what she is, just that her DNA changed when she was given the andromeda serum to cure her cancer and it had made her different. Aside from not having memories of when she was known as Nadia, she also doesn’t get a glow like regular humans after being healed by a Luxen or Origin.
The world is a strange one but is relevant, it is years after the war with the Luxen and there are things happening that are sort of like some of the things we see out in the world today with many of the protests against racism where we hear innuendo that the KKK or white supremacists might be involved in the protests, trying to turn them into riots. In the book, it seems there is some conspiracy involved trying to make the Luxen look responsible for horrible things while really it is some awful government agency trying to turn the humans against the Luxen. Luc and Evie are right in the middle of everything so I can’t wait to find out what happens in the next book.
If you have not read the first book this will contain spoilers, so be aware of that and come back once you read book one.
I certainly liked this book a bit better than the last , Evie ad Luc can still be annoying but I think because I expected it, it was not as bad.
The first half was a lot about Evie and her trying figure out who she is more like who she was and her past. She struggles quite a bit with that and what that does, it also put s a strain on the relationship or what was starting to become a relationship. But of course that is not all , while she trying to figure all that out , there is also some kind of super flu going around that is mutating and killing people what seems super fast . Everyone is trying to figure out what is happening and the public is of course blaming the Luxens and things get really dicey for them as well.
Evie grew quite a bit in this book, and became a little more bearable but she is still not my favorite, sometimes she is still pretty annoying especially when she is with Luc. While their banter is funny and cute most the times, there were a few times I rolled my eyes. Like when they were in the most ridicules life or death situation and start their banter, really it felt off, wrong and forced at those times.
Luc I of course still like him and we even get to see some other sites of him, which made me like him even more, But he also had a few eye roll moments, mostly when with Evie . I also must admit that sometimes I have a hard time seeing Luc all grown up lol.
Of course we see some old faces and it was awesome to see them and what has become of them and made me miss them.
The book is full of action and really, the last half our poor people hardly get a break and are thrown into action nonstop. The end was amazing and while I saw some things coming, other discoveries really blew me away and I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
Overall this was a fun read, with romance, humor and tons of actions, sure it had some ugh moments but overall it was a fun read
I rate it 4
Continuing from the Darkest Star, Evie and Luc race to find the answers while making me swoon with their budding romance. I fell so hard for this couple, and my heart broke more than once while they struggled against so many obstacles. Losing days by inhaling the first two books in this series, I was swept away by it’s originality, it’s swoonworthy heat, the action-packed events, twists around every corner, and the sweetness swirled within. Seeing old friends and becoming attached to new ones was such an added bonus and I was floored at all we discovered as I inhaled this book!! I absolutely cannot wait for more!!

I can’t think of a circumstance under which I wouldn’t love a JLA novel. This one, however, is a continuation of the series that introduced me to her stories and I would read a dozen and not get bored with it.
This is the second of the Origin series, so if you start here you will be LOST. Don’t do that to yourself.
We get to go on adventures with Luc and Evie plus all the other characters we’ve come to love along the way and once again the world has gone effing BANANAS because the aliens we know are not all that meets the eye and the government has their hands in things they have no business messing with.
I was actually really proud of myself for figuring out two major plot points, but heck no I’m not going to spoiler that.
Luc plus Evie. Evie plus Luc. Diesel. Young / New Adult angst and love and lust. Aliens. Mystery around who’s the bad guy, who’s telling the truth and how deep the rabbit hole goes.
READ. THIS. SERIES.
This book is epic. We finally get to see something that is more powerful than Luc and nobody is quite sure what to do about that. The war between Luxen and humanity is about to break out and so much is about to go down. Along with finding out the government is still doing experiments, we also find out a few other things that we didn’t see coming. There are a ton of twists and turns. Luc and Evie are joined by some of our favorites from the series. We also get to see Luc show off some of his badass powers that we didn’t know he had. I can’t wait for the next one.
“It’s only ever been you. Before. Now. Later. There’s been no one else. There…just can’t be.”
We pick up right where The Darkest Star left off. Evie knows that she isn’t actually Evelyn Dasher, her real name is Nadia, but she lost her memories of her previous life when she was given a serum that cured her cancer. Evie is trying to come to terms with the lies her “mom” has told her over the years and she’s also trying to figure out who she really is. This all gets way more complicated when a mysterious virus is killing humans, and the Luxen are being blamed for it. There are also a lot of secrets that are yet to come out and will end up completely rocking Evie’s world.
Evie is one of the strongest characters that I’ve read. She keeps getting things thrown at her, her world continuously gets turned upside down, but she doesn’t let that stop her. She may need to stop and take a breath but she keeps going, so seeing her rise to all of these challenges is very satisfying. And Luc! I just love a male character that is willing to burn down the world for the woman that he loves. I also loved seeing the vulnerable side to him that he usually keeps hidden away.
This book was everything that I wanted it to be. The mystery and intrigue of the virus and what it really ends up being is enough to keep you up at night while the romance between Evie and Luc just makes you want to swoon. Seriously, I love this couple so much! And while I was on the edge of my seat waiting for the relationship to happen and wanting it to happen quickly, Jen knew what she was doing and made sure that it wasn’t rushed, and the payoff was so worth the wait.
I just loved this book so much and I can’t say enough good things about it. But let me just say that the bomb that was dropped at the end of the book makes me anxious to get my hands on the next one. Seriously though, if sci-fi is your thing then make sure that you check this series out, you won’t regret it.
“There is only you and me. Boyfriend. Girlfriend. Mates. Lovers,” he said, and muscles low in my stomach curled tight. “I don’t care what you call me as long as you call me yours.”

: The Burning Shadow
: Origin #2
: Jennifer L. Armentrout
: 5/5
I was really curious about this next book in the series and let me tell you it did NOT DISSAPOINT, at all. I am in love with Luc and Evie. The characters are just awesome (I would like to think Luc approves of this message). The funny T-shirts, the crazy pick up lines, his arrogance, Luc is not your typical guy/alien and I am so here for it. The amount of reveals and plot twists were amazing, it had me gasping out loud so many times, my boyfriend wanted to know if everything was OK with me. Sure honey, everything is peachy (pun intended, people who read the first book will know). This author is not afraid to hurt characters, she gets me every time and I just can’t get mad at her, because the story is so good. And I really loved the pace of this book too, especially from half way till the end it. This book is just everything I loved from the Lux series and more. AND Holy Moly that ending. It wasn’t really an cliffhanger for me, maybe just a little bit. It was mostly a What The **** moment. Thankfully, the next book is already out and, once again, I cannot wait to see/read what happens next.

Here it is.
The latest book from the Luxen universe. I love how Jennifer created this whole Luxen, Arum and Origin world and I highly enjoyed reading and re-reading it (and I did it often)
The Burning Shadow is the second book in the Origin Series and you have to read book one (The Darkest Star) first. The whole series is a sequel of the Lux Series and plays 4 years after the invasion.
I was super excited to read this book and Jennifer L. Armentrout hadn’t disappoint me. TBS outrivaled all my expectations. This book blows my mind away. There were so many moments where I thought, “holy shit”, “I knew it” or “oh my God, this can’t be real” .
I literally ate this book. I really liked Luc in the Lux Series but now I’m in love with him. He’s so bad-ass and funny but at the same time damn overprotective and all kinds of lovely when it comes to Evie.
And Evie is such a brave and lovable person. She has to handle so many shocking things. Everything she believed in looks like a big fat lie. But she’s so damn strong. I’m so happy, that she has Luc. He’d do everything for her. Everything to keep her save. He loves her with his whole heart and soul. And it’s so beautiful. I enjoyed the interaction between them and when it came to the end I thought “No No No, I need to know what’s coming next Jen hurry up with book 3, because I need it now.
I’m also very happy to read about characters from the Lux Series. It’s so amazing to hear what happened to Daemon, Katy, Dee, Archer, Dawson and Bethany. I can’t wait to meet some more characters in the next book.
Lots of action, passion, revelations and a big plot twist. Holy hell! There wasn’t just a burning shadow. I burned, too.
The Burning Shadow is amazing and enthralling just like all of Jennifer’s books.
I can highly recommend every book about Luxen, Arum and Origins.
Read these books. You won’t regret it!
If I could give more than 5 stars, I would!
This book is looooooong and I loved every second of it. A lot happens in this book, a lot of things are revealed, some of which I am not sure how to feel about. I am not sure I am fan of the direction Jennifer has taken this book. Aliens, hybrids, origins and now this… I think this is a step too far but we will see how it will turn out in the upcoming books.
I still love Luc and his ridiculous shirts. I love how he can be so arrogant and cocky one minute and then charming and sweet the next. He is such a funny guy and he really is amazing to Evie, so patient and understanding and supportive. He also says the most amazing things that make you become a puddle of goo. That boy has real way with words. And there is one thing special about Luc that made me love him even more.
Evie has been through a lot in this book. She struggles a bit which is understandable because some of the things that happen would be quite hard to deal with. She still struggles with who she is and who she wants to be. But through it all she still remains strong, sassy and courageous.
I love that Daemon and the rest of the Lux crowd makes an appearance and Daemon didn’t lost the ability to render me speechless. He is still as amazing as ever to the point where I really want to re-read the Lux series just so I can fall in love with Daemon all over again.
And I really love Kent, he made me laugh so hard. He sure is amazing at shining light at every situation.
I really enjoyed this book and I really can’t wait for the next installment to see what surprises Jen will bring our way.
I went back and forth with this book! I wanted to throw it then cuddle it at the same time! Jla put my heart through it with this one! Kinda mad at her but she’ll make it up to me!
I feel like this is my favorite JLA book to date. This book kept me on the edge of my seat and the connection between Evie and Luc is palpable. Luc has come so far from the Lux series, when he was just a young sarcastic boy that knew everything. Now he is pretty much the same, but his layers are so deep and he carries so much on his shoulders you just feel like your heart might explode for him. He is so young and yet the people that look to him for guidance and support are innumerable. The one thing he will never waiver on is his love and loyalty to Evie. She is beginning to remember things from her past and honestly, this book took so many turns I wasn’t expecting that I just can’t figure out what is happening. The people that we lost in this book kind of devastated me, so I’m hoping that tapers off, but somehow I don’t think that will be the case. This series is quickly becoming my favorite and I hope it stays that way! Luc is such a complex character and I love him
JLA does it again. I mean, there has yet to be a book by her I haven’t enjoyed but I always feel like her paranormal books are just at another level. I was introduced to JLA with Obsidian back when it first released and to see how far this series has come is just so crazy. The world has expanded so much and it’s a testament to her writing and world building. This book picks up right where The Darkest Star left off and it doesn’t take long to get going.
I love Evie so much! She is a great character and she has been through so much in such a short time. She is a fighter and she stands up for what she believes in. Her world is basically turned upside down but she handles it and stays strong. And then we have Luc. If you would have told me when I met Luc that this is how he would grow up I would not have believed you. Luc is still the scary dangerous Origin that he always was… probably even more so now… but he is also hysterical. He is so charming and so funny and so witty and his cheesy pick-up lines are THE BEST. And the way he feels about Evie is just so clear and he doesn’t hold back with how he feels. I will never say that he is better than Daemon because Daemon holds a special place in my heart but Luc really does give him a run for his money. And I love these two together so much. JLA is the Queen of romance and this book shows all the reasons why.
This is not a short book but it is so easy to devour. I felt like the pacing was just right; it really builds to a bombshell of an ending. It never drags along the way and has just the right amount of action spread throughout. And the story is rounded out with a great secondary cast. Kent absolutely stole my heart… just STOLE IT. And I adore Zoe and love how she is such a fantastic friend to Evie. I am always here for positive representation of female friendships. On that note, love Heidi and Emery as well. And Grayson… well I just wanna know what his deal is. And catching up with some old friends again was wonderful. If you read and loved the Lux series you’ll be happy to see some familiar faces.
The Burning Shadow really delivered and it is probably one of my favorite reads this year. I always know going into a JLA book that I am going to enjoy it, but somehow she still manages to exceed my expectations. I cannot wait to get my hands on the next book because I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS.
Holy Flippin’ Llama’s and Aliens Everywhere! I have no clue whatsoever how to start this review…Because holy flippin’ llama’s and aliens flying everywhere! This book literally destroyed me! It was fantastic and beautiful but it broke my heart soooo many times. I don’t even know what’s going through my head right now. All I know is that Jennifer…my heart…is breaking.
I literally can’t express how much happens in this book and how one moment things are semi bad and then BOOM epic proportions of bad is going down….and I’m just left messaging my friends particularly Ashley…sending crazy messages as my mind is exploding and accidentally freaked her out (oops soo sorry about that by the way!!)…and I’m just like WHAT IS HAPPENING?!
And then all I wanted was to have my damn pillow! While also wanting to curl into a ball and sob my heart out.
Jennifer is evil in this book, so seriously try and prepare yourself for anything and everything! You’re going to need some armour for this one.
This book although it drags you through the fire and into unknown territory, it is amazingly written. A book that can bring this much emotion has to be given a chance. Your heart might get torn out, but hey we are readers and book nerds are a resilient bunch and always prepared for battle. So have all the essentials ready. Duct tape to hold yourself together, ice-cream to shove into your mouth and a cup of coffee to try and calm your racing emotions.
What can I actually say about the story itself though? Hmmm …well it picks up directly after the ending of Darkest Star you know, like when Sylvia offers to make a toasted cheese sandwich and tomato soup for Luc? Well they’re kinda at the table and Luc isn’t eating his sandwich because well his is Luc and decides that it was too easy making her do that. Trust Luc…He really likes to stir things up a little bit lol.
I don’t know much of what I can say without any spoilers…But basically Evie starts learning more about who she is while there’s also an outbreak of flu’s killing people left right and centre in the city…soo not good. But something happens to Evie and it unlocks a part inside her that is a tad worrisome. One moment she’s Evie and then she’s like this crazy assassin chic only focused on the threat, that can kick some major butt. Kinda cool but its really not the best of news. Thank goodness she has Luc and her friends at her side to help her through it.
I’m struggling here trying not to spoil anything but Daedalus? Yeah that place that we all hate and thought was shut down? It’s soo not…and they’re back at their games and playing with a fire that they can’t control. What’s new right?
They have created beings with extreme powers that are ultimately mindless terminators…and Evie has found herself right in the middle of it all, in a war and position she may not be able to control. For the first time in Luc’s life he does not know what is going on and that in itself is terrifying. #panicattack
And all I’m doing is reading faster and faster, while feeling like I’m running around in circles in my mind, trying to keep up with all the pages. That’s completely normal right?
You know what Luc is like…when Evie is in danger…every protective instinct is on fire. His determination to fix and keep her safe is both touching and a wee bit scary. But I’m seriously in love with Luc. His character and little antics amuse me and can I just mention the little surprises he gives to Evie are hilarious and adorable. Welcome to the family Diesel lol.
You get to see a deeper side of Luc a side that only Evie can bring out in him. You see his devotion and care for her and If anyone can get Luc to do something it is this girl. These two together are seriously perfect. She’s not scared to say how she feels or to just listen to him because he says she has to do something. It does create epic fireworks derh coz Luc is used to everyone doing as he says…are these two reminding you of anyone else lol? It honestly just reminds me of Daemon and Katy but maybe amp that up a notch or two. I’m not kidding. But there is so much emotion behind these two and its truly beautiful.
Speaking of Katy and Daemon…yes, yes you totally get to meet them again eeek!…along with Archer, Dee, Dawson and Beth and others . It’s like a reunion with all my family favourite characters…and you can’t help but get all excited when they pop up on the page. I miss these guys soo much!
I literally can’t say another thing about this story without spilling all the beans…and I can’t do that to you guys. But this is a journey that will take you on a wild ride. I do suggest or warn that you have some comfort food at hand. It kinda made me want to gorge on Tiramisu. Strange and random want lol but I do love coffee so that probably explains it.
I’m totally freaked out with the ending we had because I have no idea where this is going to go right now. I can barely think properly. All I know is that I need that next book and I need it now!
I don’t know if I want to say thank you Jennifer lol, since I have a bone to pick with some of the things that happened in that book. Like you are kinda evil to your characters…its da truth *shrugs*. Like why, why, why did so many bad things happen to the people I love? My poor heart.
Sigh…That was a very well written and amazing story Jennifer. I cannot wait to hear how you fix this war that is brewing. Please, please, please don’t destroy my heart anymore and kill anyone.
Okay, just so everyone is clear I do LOVE this book and Jennifer but well I need a moment to process all the crazy that just went down. Just know you will love this book, even if it hurts right to your core. Jennifer has an amazing ability of bringing a story to life and this book is proof of that…otherwise I wouldn’t be being this crazy and rambling like a fool.
Also for audiobook lovers the narration by Saskia Maarleveld is INCREDIBLE. The way she reads this story only makes the world come more alive in my opinion. I think she has to be one of my favourite narrators.
Also I do have to prepare you…the fall back to reality is a tough one.
You do not want to miss the second book in this series. If you haven’t already purchased…why haven’t you? Grab your copy already!
Okay, that’s enough from me.
Happy Reading
A compelling sequel, The Burning Shadow, has numerous twists and turns that keep the story entertaining.
Once again, the novel deals with complex themes such as immigration and xenophobia through a science fiction lens. People are using circumstances to spread fear and hatred to blind the masses, and it highlights something new about Evie, who was not necessarily indifferent in the previous novel, but she did not pick a side as she has in this novel. Evie has realized that keeping silent; she is not helping those who need help. Finally, Evie picks a side and raising her voice against the injustices, growing as a character and creating tension within the novel.
It is a great way to highlight important issues in society for all ages. It is an excellent read with intense development in the storytelling. It is energetic and moves quickly, telling the story with ease and evolving the mechanism behind the plot effortlessly. Despite the character development, there are times when Evie and Luc seem like Mary Sue caricatures. There are just too many times when they are too perfect, too powerful, too in touch with their power. It comes naturally to them, how they use it without difficulty. Nevertheless, Armentrout highlighted their flaws and explored them and the darkness that hovers at the fringes of their personas.
It is the flaws that make the characters so gravitating. Luc seems so perfect at times, but the dark lengths he is willing to go through make him so flawed, especially with the way Armentrout highlights how they haunt him and scar his soul. Moreover, the way Evie lets her fear and anger sometimes overwhelm her balance out her seemingly perfect output.
Both characters drive the story forward and bring up important issues. They make hard choices with the world changing around them.
By the end, the story has evolved so much and has made quite a fantastic sequel.
Loved!!!!
This was so much more than I anticipated. The second book in a series is usually a letdown but I am really glad this was not. After reading too many Jennifer Armentrout books, I can definitely say that we fit. I want swoon as much as I want action and she never lets me down in both aspects.
I read The Darkest Star before I read the Lux series so it was something new to me. It was one of the reasons why I liked it very much. But since I read the Lux series before reading The Burning Shadow, I didn’t set my expectations too high. I’m just glad to revisit its world and my favorite characters. You would think that after a full five-book series, Jen would run out of ideas. But no, her imagination runs deep.
What did I like about this book? Well, first things first: Luc. Seriously. He is such a complex but irresistible character. I remember being initially pissed at him in The Darkest Star but I understood him after reading the Lux series. So reading The Burning Shadow made me see him a different light. If it was possible to fall in love with him more, it’s exactly what I did. Seriously, who can resist him? Not me (and not Evie), that’s for sure.
Another thing I liked about this book is the plot. To me, it was just the right pace. Things sped up at the right moment and I was seriously holding my breath at one point. I was stressed but in a good way. I honestly loved everything about it and I never felt that it was boring. A scene made me want to scream and shout hallelujah. The ending made me want to say all the curse words I know. Enough said.
I am really excited about what’s in store for this series. I know there will be heartbreak and suffering in the future (if you know Jen, you know enough to expect this). The road won’t be easy but I am ready. I’m just so glad it will be a long road (3 more books, I heard) because I’m really not ready to let go of Luc — I mean, of this series — yet.

My heart wants to explode every time I think of Evie and Luc.
I thought this story had the perfect balance of romance and plot. The book picks up right where book 1 ended. People are still terrified of the Lux and hate is spreading the country. There’s a deadly flu like virus going around, one that seems to be originating from the Lux. People are dying and some people are tired of having the Lux around.
I listened to the audio version, and I thought the narrator did an amazing job. It’s the same narrator from book 1, and I think she handles all the characters and emotions really well.
The chemistry between Evie and Luc jumps from the pages. Every time they’re together I get a stupid grin on my face. The banter between the two is hilarious.
I also like that there’s an ensemble of characters. You see a lot of Evie with her girl friends, as well as the alien groups.
Fans of the Lux Series will be ecstatic, as we see a lot of the old characters we know and love.
Thankfully, the cliffhanger wasn’t that bad. I can deal until the next book comes out next year. I do wish this was about 50 pages less, it did drag a bit on certain conversations and scenes.
Overall, this was a great addition to the ever expanding Lux universe. While not completely original, this was highly entertaining.
4.5 (spoiler alert if you haven’t read previous books)
It was a 3 then it grew into a 4 and bam the last 10% Went 5 stars with it’s twisted wicked ending.
Humans can be such jerks ! Kill Kill Destroy, Kill, Overpower, Manipulate, and Own It All. Mwhahahahaha I’m so anti human right now, even wearing my alien lover badge. They thought the worst of the worst was over, but they were wrong.
Luc, Purrr Purrr he makes my inner cougar very happy. Oh dang it I went there. He’s a dreamy package with purple eyes, PURPLE ! I don’t care if he’s a teen character. Him and Nadia/Evie are such a connected couple, I love a long drawn out courtship. there is no insta hormone loving teenager stuff here, thankfully.
Oh the ending ! Wicked Ms. Armentrout has a twisted soul for leaving me hanging like that. I thank you dear author, you rocked it out !
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and Evie and Luc are really growing on me. That said, I still picture Luc as a 15 year old snotty, but lovable, all-knowing character, so this is a tad harder for me to get into than say, the original Lux series.
Also, Katy and Daemon rocked. Evie and Luc are cute and fun, but they don’t rock the same universe as Katy and Daemon.
Still, I’m bummed there isn’t a third book yet! Can’t wait for more!
