The golden skies, the translucent twilight, the white nights, all hold the promise of youth, of love, of eternal renewal. The war has not yet touched this city of fallen grandeur, or the lives of two sisters, Tatiana and Dasha Metanova, who share a single room in a cramped apartment with their brother and parents. Their world is turned upside down when Hitler’s armies attack Russia and begin … their unstoppable blitz to Leningrad.
Yet there is light in the darkness. Tatiana meets Alexander, a brave young officer in the Red Army. Strong and self-confident, yet guarding a mysterious and troubled past, he is drawn to Tatiana — and she to him. Starvation, desperation, and fear soon grip their city during the terrible winter of the merciless German siege. Tatiana and Alexander’s impossible love threatens to tear the Metanova family apart and expose the dangerous secret Alexander so carefully protects — a secret as devastating as the war itself — as the lovers are swept up in the brutal tides that will change the world and their lives forever.

What an awesome read — the horrible conditions of life in a war zone. I would have given it 5 stars except for a 120 page section in the middle that was agony to get through. At page 500 (of 804), when the couple started fighting, I wanted to reach through the pages and throttle the author. I almost stopped reading, but reasoned that I’d loved it …
This was the first book in the series and the best one. A wonderful story.
in one word Fantastic
One of the best books about the Seige of Leningrad with all of its horrors plus romance. Paullina Simmons has created two unforgettable charcters: Tatiana and Alexander in this first book of her trilogy. Very deatiled and a page-turner!
I have dark circles under my eyes and the world is shaking. Because I don’t even remember which sleepless night it’s already….
I finished this three-volume saga, but my “agony” has no end. I read again. And again. Everything from the very beginning.
I’ve never felt this way before, seriously, not a single time, it’s so ingrained into my every …
I really enjoyed this book. It opens up a world that our generation is so unaware of and needs to understand what living under communist rule would be like. It takes you to highs of even the small triumphs, to the lows of despair and disappointments of this kind of life.
I think in our “book world” we have an idea of how a book should end to …
This is a great favorite of mine. I read it several times and even after years some details stay fresh. I’m glad it was recommended to me.
Love this story. Interesting setting.
I loved this BOOk so much I have read and re-read it several times, I fell in love with the characters Tatiana and Alexander and their family life. Felt so close to them throughout the story feeling so sad and cried with them. I felt anxious at times when Alexander was in trouble and scared for Tatiana. I fell in love with Russia and St Petersburg …
Long book but really worth the time great book
This is one of my favorite books!! The characters have stayed with me over many years, as have the settings and situations around which the story is anchored. The subsequent 2 books were also quite good, but for sheer drama, this first one–The Bronze Horseman–can’t be beat.
Absolutely loved it, couldn’t put it down. Historical Romantic fiction at its best. Cried & enraptured frequently.
Very good except for about 100 pages of 50 Shades of Gray 2/3 way through. Only needed 20 pages for story but otherwise good, good book
I got to about page 800 of this about 1200 page book and everything turned into sex, in great detail…I felt the plot was abandoned so I quit reading it.
I adored this book! I will never forget Alexander and Tatiana as long as I live. It’s absolutely the best love story in the world of WWII fiction. I’ll read it again someday. I love those two people.
I read all 3 books and was sad when I was fnished, the characters are great, story
inspirational, tragic and heartwarming.
Engaging… enthralling… a pull into history of a very difficult time period and place during horrendous events…. I had to take a break before I could finish… So real…. heart rendering.
Oh, how I loved this book when I first read it in 2008! I’m not even sure what I can say about The Bronze Horseman by Paullina Simons to get you to understand it is one of the most beautiful stories you’ll ever read. The best part is, the story continues as this is the first in a series of magnificence. This book will make you cry like no other, …
This is a must read. Up there with dr. Zhavigo and gone with the wind for its range and depth of characters and historical circumstances.
