Danger, loyalty and loving the enemy… Inn – which is where, inevitably, everything changes.
For the Hart is in turmoil once more, captured by a small group of French raiders led by the wildly reckless Captain Armand le Noir – who always succeeds in the end. Dazzled by Isabelle’s beauty, Armand regards her at first much like the task in hand – a distraction from his own pain. But the Hart seems to work its magic and inconvenient attraction gets in the way of both unwise assignation and the search for lost prisoners of war.
With the raiders only partially foiled, the adventure sweeps from the inn to a neighborhood ball and then to France itself.
Amidst the constant danger and the intensity of their growing love, Isabelle and Armand live on the edge of betraying each other or their own loyalties.
But someone is manipulating them, the true enemy is unclear, and in the end they must both risk everything to be together.

Great romantic fun!
Another visit to the Hart Inn where anything can happen and often does! This time with Isabelle and Captain Armand. Isabelle is a French emigre but has lived in England since she was a very small child. But her late husband was a traitor and she has had a hard time getting work and being lonely.
She meets Armand at the Inn, where he has been trying to rescue escaped prisoners of war. Their lives intersect and an attraction blooms, but there is more at stake that will make their journey not very smooth.
Mary Lancaster, who is one of my favorite authors always creates tales of the heart and this one is full of spies, danger and intrigue that kept me enchanted until the end. Another great addition to this series!!
The Broken Heart by Mary Lancaster is an intriguing read, bull of betrayal and angst. Isabelle is the widow of a traitor and everyone knows it, making her life less than enjoyable. She is currently sitting in a private room in an inn waiting for an assignation with a man she doesn’t even like. All of a sudden a group of men takes over the inn, looking for some escaped prisoners whom they hoped to take home. Things get complicated. Isabelle is instantly attracted to their leader, Captain Armand le Noir, and tries to help while saving the innocents they have detained in the inn. Before the night is over, she is fully in love, as is Armand. But it is not meant to be. Without his prisoners, her and his men leave.
If you are looking for an unlikely happily-ever-after, this is the book for you. Through the ins and outs of the story, both Isabelle and Armand have no belief that they will ever see one another again, with praying to be reunited. There is a good plot with plenty of intrigue and even a vindictive woman. It was an entertaining read with plenty of love to go around. I recommend it.
I received a free ARC of the Broken Heart from Dragonblade. All opinions and interpretations contained herein are solely my own.
I love when a book grips me and guides you on an heart sighing journey filled with unexpected twists that holds your full attention to the very end and The Broken Heart does just that! Mary Lancaster has written a story woven from beginning to end with threads of intrigue, espionage, smugglers and love. She’s filled this story with characters that come off the pages and pulled you into their tale, a story that is well-written, strong plot and great dialogue, with setting descriptions and action sequences are wonderfully vivid which brings this read together perfectly. Isabelle arrives at the Hart Inn for a assignation but before she can decide if this is what she wants she meets Armand a devil-may-care French Raider. As they embark on a dangerous adventures their emotions and feelings escalate in this heart-stoping romance filled with drama, deciet, jealousy, uncertainties, deception and with forces in the background trying to manipulate them. It is so enjoyable to read stories that are all truly individual to the characters and revisiting characters from the other novels. Mary has outdone herself with this novel that is a must read!
This is a wonderful story that is mystery and romance wrapped up together. Isabelle de Renarde is a rather notorious widow, not for her own actions, but her deceased husband was a traitor to England. Many of her former “friends” and family have turned their backs on her and her loneliness has lead her to plan a clandestine meeting with a man at an out of town inn simply for the sake of company.
But her plans go awry when french Captain Armand leNoir and his cohorts arrive unexpectedly looking to escort a few french prisoners back to their own shores. It is this conflict that brings Isabelle, once a french emigre as a child whose family settled in England after escaping the revolution in their homeland, and Armand the french captain who seems to have no care for his own safety.
The two have in instant attraction but it is deeper than the physical. They both have pasts that enable them to have empathy for the other’s situations. The two are drawn into a web of intrigue, spying, and danger before the tale ends and it is definitely a page turner!
I loved the story of these two characters and the world they navigated to find true happiness with each other. I highly recommend it.
