I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed this second book a little more than I did the first one. I believe it was Scarlett Coles’ sweet personality that won the day. Sweetness dressed in determination and a clear insight into the people around her.
Her determination and clear vision are what I connected with most, the depth of Scarlett’s thoughts. For instance, her meanderings about Henry were dead on. I appreciated that, unlike the others, she refused to cast the sins of the grandfather onto the young shoulders of the boy. And this was not an easy task to do since her friend and mentor adamantly denied her that friendship. Lauren’s distaste for Henry forced poor Scarlet to keep her secrets, and I believe these secrets are what cost her the success she wanted.
I found this second book flowed better than the first one. The story allowed me to put it down when I needed to do so, but I still cared enough about Scarlett to pick it up again with haste.
I also enjoyed her love for the dogs and the fact that she established a great relationship with them. I found Henry’s double personality and jab at stardom well portrayed. A complex character to write, and I believe Melissa Storm did this well, giving us just enough information on his reasons for his flippancy toward the woman that he said he loved.
All in all, this will lead me to the third book in the series, as I am getting attached to the other characters as well.
Oh, Scarlett! Are you truly judging a man by the sins of his… grandfather?
How disappointing. But then, even your closest friends get a bit of that judgy streak, don’t they?
Meanwhile, I’m learning more about you. You’re determined. Some folks might say stubborn… but as you embark on your next journey, that determination and spark of will is what you’ll need to reach your goal of becoming a musher.
You also love fiercely… How about that?
Well Love and Fate are not finished with you and Henry yet.
Oh, and about that “stubborn” thing… I think you’ll find that Henry has it, too. Measure for measure, pound for pound (And he weighs more than you)!
Besides… maybe you misjudged him? But how can his ambition and yours mesh together?
And when you two get together… Whoo! There’s smoke and fire in the Alaska snow!
This second installment in the Sled Dog series is every bit as good as the first. Scarlett is a character that it took me a little time to warm up to, but by the middle of the book I had thawed considerably! And Henry! Oh, my!
Bottom line: Very good! 5 stars.
Predictable, easy read.
Yes, this story has mystery, love & adventure. Scarlett is convinced to quit her library job & participate in the Iditarod. Henry throws a mickey wrench in her plans when he joins the race for the first time as her rival. Then there is the mystery of why Scarlett’s boss broke her promise to Scarlett. And a mystery of Henry receiving a large inheritance. I enjoyed the story.
I really liked the characters and the story-line. The only reason I didn’t give it a higher rating is because I think it’s highly unlikely that two inexperienced people could find teams and run the Iditarod in a year.
What a great story.
This story is a clean romance with lots of action and dogs.
3.5* I liked this book better than the previous one in the series. It still asked me to suspend my disbelief for a lot of very unbelievable things, but somehow these felt a little bit more like they could actually happen. I loved that Scarlett was willing to chase after a long-held dream. I just wish she’d been nicer to her hero. She spent a lot of time blaming Henry for things that aren’t even his fault. I liked Henry. He’s caught in an unfortunate situation and trying to make the best of it. I wish we’d been able to see the pair of them spend more time together building their romance. I thought the ending was quite adorable.
I received a complimentary copy of this book through Hidden Gems Books.
“Let There Be Light” is the 2nd book in Melissa Storm’s sled dog series.
Melissa out does herself again by writing, yet another, fabulous series that you won’t want to put down.
This story is about Scarlet and Henry … She is a librarian by day and a wannabe musher by night. (Not literally but ….). She loves dogs and would love to race in the Iditarod but the closest she’ll get is by helping her friend Lauren. So she thinks.
She’s at work and her mind isn’t on books like it usually is. Why? She’s thinking about the dreamy guy she met at the ball over the weekend. Her senior librarian thinks she’s dreaming about “those dogs” and suggests that Scarlett take a leave of absence to train and race now. Little does Scarlett know that she is being set up.
Henry is the grandson of Henry Mitchell … The Henry Mitchell that has a very bad reputation when it comes to sled dogs. You’ll just have to read the book to find out why.
Scarlett and Henry have a “fire and ice” relationship. It’s this relationship that keeps the story going and leave you wanting more.
This is a very well written, clean story that you won’t want to put it down. With God, ALL things are possible and He’ll always be right there with you. Even if/when you don’t think He is.
Thank you Melissa for another wonderful story/series. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.
Well written. Enjoyed learning about the passion of the Iditarod race.
So much inaccurate about dog sledding and the Iditarod – probably a disappointment mostly because I was expecting something from a fellow musher, not something that reads like a teenage girls crazy dreams.
Let There Be Light by Melissa Storm
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I honestly loved this book. I was raised in Anchorage Alaska and this book was like home to me. I loved watching the Iditarod and reading about it in this book.
Scarlett Cole has a once in a lifetime chance to race in the Iditarod. She goes on leave and moves in with her best friend to help train with the dogs.
Henry Mitchell III has a bucket list of items he must complete in order to gain his and his family’s inheritance. One of those being racing and placing in the Iditarod.
I enjoyed reading about these two. You could tell there was a connection between them. I’m sure I’ve given away more than I should…. You will have to read the book to see if they complete the race. I highly recommend it.
What a great story. Racing in the Iditarod. Falling in love. Jumping to conclusions. Oh, yes. Fall in love with a man ‘everyone’ says is just like his dad, only said dad was infamous for his mistreatment of sled dogs. Then find out he wants your help racing, gives memorable kisses, but you do not know if he is using you or is sincere. She is not like any librarian I ever knew. The story has captured the dangers and beauty of the vast Alaskan unknown. Wonderful characters, sweet romance, new puppies and the unexpected will captivate and delight.
Let There Be Light by Melissa Storm was a great book. Scarlett loves dog-sledding but also loves books. She has had aspirations to compete. Henry is also a new competitor to dog sledding but is flanked by his families bad name. I loved reading this book.
I was sad to come to the last page of this book! I wanted it to continue but I’m glad there is another book in the series so I can continue with the characters! I am loving everything about these sled dogs and the people who love them! Scarlett had such a tender heart! When she first meets Henry, she has no idea who he is but their eyes meet across a crowded dance floor and it’s as if they are the only 2 people in the room. It’s almost like Cinderella because they dance but both end up not finding out each other’s names. Scarlett finds out later that Henry is actually the grandson of a greedy, mean billionaire who put in his will that Henry has to jump through all these hoops to get his inheritance. Because of some things in the grandfather’s past, Scarlett immediately doesn’t like him, nor does anyone else but she’s still drawn to Henry for some reason.
This story is so magical and is different because most of the story is spent with Henry and Scarlett APART! That’s unusual for a romance! They both have to participate and run in the Iditirod dog sled race but for different reasons. I loved the story as told from Scarlett’s point of view and how hard she works to live her dream of being in the race. The characters from the previous book are in the story too so I enjoyed that!
This book has so much to do with the public persona and the private persona – the person you let the public see and then the REAL you. And, it’s about not judging people and acceptance. I loved it!
I love Melissa Storm’s stories especially since the subjects are so varied.
I learn so much from her plots.
This one was no different.
The plot had many twists that were so likeable and the characters were so believable.
The story had humor, suspence and of course love.
Kudos to the author.
I can hardly wait for the next book
As an avid reader, I loved that Scarlett is a librarian, passionate about saving books and libraries. It was cool to read about the Iditarod in detail, but I can’t imagine putting my life in danger and dealing with such extreme weather conditions to run that race. Good for Henry to overcome his family legacy and want to do good with his potential inheritance. I loved reading about all the dogs especially Fataine and Fred. It was so sad how cruel some people can be to such wonderful animals. Great story with plenty of adventure, suspense, humor, and romance. I can’t wait to read spunky Liz’s story next.
Scarlett is attracted to the “enemy” lol. I felt sorry for Henry because he was being judged by his family name instead of the person he truly is yet he doesn’t let that discourage him, he has a kind heart. Scarlett is as stubborn as a mule, she has so much love to give and she shows that with her compassion for her dogs. Very exciting, adventurous and emotional ride.
I’m loving this series! Scarlett is a librarian who dreams of competing in the Iditarod. An unexpected chance to fulfill that dream and return to working in her beloved library is proposed to her and she jumps at the chance. Scarlett is an intriguing mix of introverted and stubbornness. So many twists and turns in this book! If you enjoy clean, Christian fiction, I highly recommend this book!
Romance On The Ididarod
Wonderful, warm and clean romance with sled dog racing and the Ididarod as prominent plot features. As will all of this author’s work, this is a well written book that features other characters from the series but is a stand-alone novel. I have read many of this author’s works and this novel did not disappoint. It is well written and features a solid plot and well developed, realistic characters. Even the dogs act realistically! I received a free copy of this book (ARC) and voluntarily chose to share my honest review.
Let There Be Light is a great story. The plot and the characters are well developed. It puts you right into the great Alaskan Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race!! It is full of the excitement and the behind the scenes training and care of the dogs. In addition, I enjoyed the interaction between Scarlett & Henry and the competition between them during the race. Henry’s grandfather had a reputation of mistreating sled dogs and this negative legacy has also been given to Henry. When Scarlett first meets Henry, she does not know who he is or anything about his family.
I enjoyed seeing the characters develop and show their true selves. Alaska is one of my favorite places that I have visited. This story was like going back to Alaska and to experiences something that is part of the state that I would not normally be able to witness. Reading about it in this book has given me that virtual experience.
This is a great book to read snuggled in front of a fireplace with a cup of hot chocolate. I highly recommend it.
