Oscar is a sweet but disastrously overweight ghetto nerd who—from the New Jersey home he shares with his old world mother and rebellious sister—dreams of becoming the Dominican J.R.R. Tolkien and, most of all, finding love. But Oscar may never get what he wants. Blame the fukú—a curse that has haunted Oscar’s family for generations, following them on their epic journey from Santo Domingo to the … the USA. Encapsulating Dominican-American history, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao opens our eyes to an astonishing vision of the contemporary American experience and explores the endless human capacity to persevere—and risk it all—in the name of love. One of the best
I’ve everything by Juno Diaz. Love his work.
Didn’t like it
Sad but realistic.
Did not like it
UNUSUAL
Couldn’t get into it, but I tried.
This was an unusual, interesting book. I enjoyed the inclusion of many words in Spanish and the author’s (and characters’) sense of humor. I couldn’t much identify with the main character, though, just because (as a teenage boy) he was _so_ obsessed with getting women to “love” (or really just have sex with) him.
Junot Diaz is brilliant.
This book came highly recommended but I did not like it and could not finish it
There is no beauty in Diaz’ language, just gratuitous use of profanity.
A bit crazy but I enjoyed it.
Wonderful book. I have reread this several times, and learn more at each rereading.
