It was on the winding rural road, in the middle of a downpour, and a woman was sitting inside—the woman who was killed. She’s been trying to put the crime out of her mind; what could she have done, really? It’s a dangerous road to be on in the middle of a storm, and she probably would have been hurt herself if she’d stopped. Not only that, her husband would be furious if he knew she’d broken her promise not to take that shortcut home.
But since then, she’s been forgetting every little thing. Where she left the car; if she took her pills; even the alarm code.
The only thing she can’t forget is that woman, the woman she might have saved, and the terrible nagging guilt.
And the silent calls she’s receiving, or the feeling that someone’s watching her…
You won’t be able to put down B. A. Paris’s The Breakdown, the next chilling, propulsive novel from the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of Behind Closed Doors.

Not as suspenseful as Behind Closed Doors but a great read nonetheless. The characters are believable. The story flows well. And though the ending was a little predictable, I still couldn’t put it down.
Loved this thriller! Some interesting turns.
Thrillers seem to be tough nowadays with constant comparison to runaway hits like Gone Girl but this one does a good job at holding its own. It wasn’t my favorite thriller but I didn’t anticipate the ending, so that’s huge! I’d give this 3.5 stars if I could.
I liked the plot. It was twisty and interesting and even though Cass started to annoy me with her paranoia, I had fun reading it. The ending felt a bit rushed to me, a bit too quick to tie everything up. And I never fully bought into everything that was happening, I didn’t feel that tension that builds with a thriller, so it was a little lacking for me.
I wouldn’t steer people away from this one, but it isn’t my first choice for the genre.
I loved this book. I really liked the characters and how everything played out. I read it in a day because I couldn’t put it down!
It was a dark and stormy night, and Cass drives past a car that appears to be broken down on along the road. Afraid to stop because of fear of being attacked, she vows to call for assistance once she gets home. As she pulls up to her driveway, however, she is distracted by a call from her friend, Rachel, and the broken down car slips from her mind.
The next morning, she learns that the woman in the broken down car was murdered in the night, and the guilt consumes her. If she had called for help, would the woman be alive? As the murder unravels, Cass learns that the woman was a woman named Jane, whom she had only recently met and shared lunch with.
With a murderer on the lose, Cass finds herself becoming filled with guilt, anxiety, and fear. Her anxieties heighten as she begins receiving silent phone calls and unexplained things begin to happen. When her husband, Matthew, insists she sees a doctor, Cass begins to fear that her forgetfulness might be genetic, as her mother had dementia.
Is she losing her mind? Is the murderer after because she saw Jane’s car that night? Or is something more sinister at play?
The Breakdown is B.A. Paris’s follow up to her amazing debut novel, Behind Closed Doors, which is one of my favorite thrillers. With Behind Closed Doors being such a great read, I went into The Breakdown with high expectations that I’ sad to say weren’t met. Cass tended to get on my nerves more than anything and I had no desire to keep reading. I actually didn’t touch my Kindle for 3 days, which is extremely unusual for me. I still plan on reading B.A. Paris’s next book with hopes that I enjoy it more than The Breakdown.
I voluntarily received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is one of the best read of the year. page turner with a perfect ending.
Great story line.
Held my interest from beginning to end.
Pretty good twists and turns will keep you interested.
I actually listened to this on a play-away and could not wait for my n ext opportunity. At times, it seemed to draw things out but then it would pick up speed. I had some of I t figured out but was s still surprised by the ending.
This is one of my favorite books that I have read recently. It was a twisted kind of story that kept you guessing up until the end. I didn’t figure out the ending but was quite pleased the way the story did end. I highly recommend this book if you like thrillers.
Loved it!
Although I lemons of knew who the “bad guy” was from the beginning it was a good British thriller.
I struggled with the first half of this book in that it seemed to just drag and drag as we watch Cass disintegrate mentally. I felt she was totally obsessing about a person she had just met being murdered, and her guilt for not stopping to assist this woman she had passed on the road prior to her being murdered. As the story nears the halfway point, the story gently points reader in the correct direction, assuming you have been paying attention. Cass handled herself brilliantly the last quarter of this book, and I found myself cheering for her and wishing she had done way more than what she did! How’s that for capturing your interest to read this book? I am glad I pushed myself to keep reading!
Liked the characters, story moved along, but very predictable. Behind Closed Doors is still my favorite by this author.
enjoyed this book
Good plot with surprises.
I had high hopes for this book after reading this author’s first book, “Behind Closed Doors.” That book was so good I was like, “Ah, they should make a movie,” and I hear they actually are. This book they should make a movie about too, although her first one was my favorite of the two. But I really did love this one, and I got to read it in like 24 hours, so that was even more of a treat. I took it camping with us. That, and it was a “new” book and I could only have it for so many days, so I was motivated to BE ABLE to MAKE THE TIME since I would have to return is to quickly. I hope she continues writing. I like how she had the mystery and then filled in the blanks for you, even though by then you already knew some of how it probably played out. It was fun to know it, probably, and then really get all the further details and know it for sure.
Excellent book. Sad that she’s only written 2 books so far. On the edge of my seat waiting for her next book.
