It was on the winding rural road, in the middle of a downpour, and a woman was sitting inside—the woman who was killed. She’s been trying to put the crime out of her mind; what could she have done, really? It’s a dangerous road to be on in the middle of a storm, and she probably would have been hurt herself if she’d stopped. Not only that, her husband would be furious if he knew she’d broken her promise not to take that shortcut home.
But since then, she’s been forgetting every little thing. Where she left the car; if she took her pills; even the alarm code.
The only thing she can’t forget is that woman, the woman she might have saved, and the terrible nagging guilt.
And the silent calls she’s receiving, or the feeling that someone’s watching her…
You won’t be able to put down B. A. Paris’s The Breakdown, the next chilling, propulsive novel from the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of Behind Closed Doors.

I was enthralled by this book. It was so well written and it really drew me into this world. I could not turn the pages quick enough to find out what was going to happen. I absolutely recommend this for your next read!
What a good read!! I couldn’t put the book down. Not the ending I was expecting either. A definite must read!!
This was the second book by B. A. Paris. A page turner. Keeps you guessing. Not quite as dark as her first, but I definitely recommended to my book club friends.
While it didn’t take long to guess at the plot, it continued to be a page turner to not only confirm but to figure out how the author worked through all of it.
Nice twists & turns! Kept me interested.
Enjoyed B.A. Paris’s second novel! It is another thriller written by this author. I cannot wait to read her next novel Bring Me Back.
I don’t often review books but this one really made an impact. I enjoyed the style in which it was written and of course enjoyed the ending.
Like “Behind Closed Doors”, this book was excellent. I couldn’t wait to get back to it, and I stayed up WAY too late reading it.
I was a huge fan of B.A. Paris’ “Behind Closed Doors” and was anxious to read her next release.
THE BREAKDOWN was a letdown for me. I did finish reading it and was pleasantly surprised by a tiny plot twist in the ending, but the main character’s overall responses and reactions to what was happening to her were repetitive and wore very thin by halfway through the book. I believe I would have enjoyed it more if it had been a tighter plot and novella length.
The story is told by Cass, who returns home on stormy night via a road through the woods. She almost wrecks avoiding a car pulled to the side. She stops, but when the driver doesn’t come to her car, she continues home and forgets about it. She is later horrified to realize the woman in the car was a new friend that was murdered sometime later that night in her car. She is wracked with guilt and tells no one, not her husband or best friend, who worked with the murdered woman.
The reader also learns that Cass has been forgetting small things and is worried that she may be experiencing early onset dementia like her mother. This makes Cass a possible unreliable narrator. As she becomes more afraid and paranoid some of her reactions are just not believable. This is when I would have liked less Cass and fewer pages.
I finished to see if my assumptions were correct and they were. There are not that many characters in the story, so it is not hard to figure out, especially if you read a lot of this type of book. As stated earlier, there is a small plot twist at the end that did surprise me, but there is a lot of emotional drama to get through for the surprise. This was just an average thriller for me.
Oh my goodness! This book had me thinking I was having a break down while reading it. B.A. Paris does such a great job of sucking a reader in and making them feel the psychological craziness of their characters. I had my suspicions of who I thought was causing all the crazy, but nope, I was completely wrong again. Just too many things were not adding up, how could this all be in her head so quickly? If you have read Paris before and haven’t read this one, you need to. It’s a wild ride on the crazy train.
Kept my interest. The author takes you into the minds of her characters developing aa relationship with each of them. Keeps you in suspense with a very unexpected ending.
For the second time around I enjoyed it -Funny -I forgot I had read it -Seemingly it was familiar after a while-I really love the way this author incorporates twists and turns -She writes a really good yarn-and you can’t help thinking Wake up Girlie-!!!!! before the end-
Such a clever story! Lots of twists.
It was one of the best thrillers I have ever read. We passed it around in my breakfast group because it was so good. I won’t say more, but for anyone who enjoys thrillers and hasn’t read it, I highly recommend it.
I read this one in two days. Couldn’t put it down. A must read for mystery lovers.
I love her writing style; her phrasing is like a warm knife slicing through butter. I will read literally anything this woman writes. But as much as I would’ve loved to, I couldn’t give this book more than 4 stars because I figured out the plot far, far too early. So early, in fact, that I assumed the author was leading me down a path only to surprise me by taking me somewhere else. Afraid not…there are too few characters and it’s just too thinly veiled.
I couldn’t put this book down!
I really enjoyed this book! Thanks for a great story B.A. Paris!
Great read with realistic and intriguing plot. Excellent twist at the end.
It only took ONE day to read. Thank God for weekends and microwaves so I didn’t have to stop except for food and water. Wait that sounds too much like prison and this book was anything but being punished. I was however trapped within my imagination and the world created by B.A. Paris.
This is I believe the fourth book of the authors I’ve read in about 15 months.
I highly recommend taking the ride on the “dark stormy night” and chase this story of expectations in love and friendships. The real fears that can be felt if you believe you may be becoming extra forgetful… is it stress or are you being gaslit? When a close family member experienced early onset dementia every time you misplace your keys or can’t find your car in the parking lot can be the beginning of your final demise.
Read this book if you enjoy watching a plot unravel into a fantastic revelation right before your very eyes.
