Never make a bet with a man who plays to win… Especially not a man like handsome, arrogant Connor Pratt. AKA the huge PITA who’s currently crashing in my spare room. AKA my brother’s best friend since they were about six. AKA the one guy who still makes me feel like an awkward tongue-tied loser. But when Connor moved in, I got a glimpse of another side of him. Because, like me, Connor’s going … another side of him. Because, like me, Connor’s going through a nasty break-up. And, like me, he’s just doing whatever he can to get through it.
Unfortunately, his method involves drinking alarming amounts of whiskey and watching a lot of, um … movies … that make every inch of my skin flush.
I’m just trying to be helpful when I tell him that he should try my method: copious amounts of baked goods, sappy romantic comedies, and late nights spent whining with girlfriends.
But I should have known Connor would take that as a challenge.
Now, he says he’ll try my way of dealing with a break-up … but only if I agree to try his. Six month’s rent to the person whose method works best.
We call it the break-up bet. And I’m going to win. Except right now, it feels like there’s a whole lot more at stake than just rent money…

Oh my God I loved this book! Everything about it was perfect for my taste. I loved the hot and sweet relationship between Lucy and Connor. Her friends are amazing and hilarious! The premise was fantastic. I really just loved it overall. Definitely recommend this book and will absolutely be reading more from Cat Carmine in the very near future.
This one was recommended to me by one of my Facebook crew, and I have to say, I owe her a big thank you. (I won’t call you out, but you know who you are, and…thanks!!) I’m super suspicious of new-to-me authors because I’ve been burned so many times, so without her recommendation, I’m not sure I would’ve given this one a try.
There’s LOTS to like here, folks:
1. It’s a standalone. It features characters that showed up in other books by the author, but if you haven’t read any of those (like I haven’t), you can read this one and not feel like you’re missing out.
2. It’s a brother’s-best-friend romance, if you’re into that kind of thing (which I am, thank you very much)
3. There’s plenty of witty banter in this one, and y’all know how much I love witty banter
4. This is a funny, light-hearted rom com/contemporary romance. Nothing too angsty, nothing that will trigger you or cause a horrible book hangover that leaves you unable to pick up another book for weeks.
5. Connor’s cocky and bordering on arrogant, but at heart he’s a true nice-guy hero, and I can’t get enough of nice-guy heroes.
6. I like that Lucy is a baker and a blogger. You don’t see too many romances about bloggers. (And why not, authors? We’re fabulous! But I digress…)
Now, I will be honest and let you know that I did NOT approve of what happened between Connor and Lucy towards the end of the book. I won’t spoil anything, but they both pretty much acted like children. If they’d just used their words and had a grown-up conversation, they could’ve easily worked everything out without all the drama.
But, minor quibble notwithstanding, this was a fun read and I’ll most likely check out the author’s backlist and new releases.
And don’t forget to check out the Romance Rehab blog for more rants, raves, book lists, and other fun romance-y stuff: http://www.romancerehab.com/
So cute!
This is one of those ‘just one more chapter’ books. I was sucked in right away and didn’t want to put it down. It’s an easy read that just flows and is so much fun!
Lucy’s bro’s bff is returning to New York and Lucy just happens to have a spare room for him to stay in. And maybe she may have had a not so little crush on Connor when they were kids. Awwwkward… and she can’t get over the awkward! Connor is such a sweet guy, not at all the jerk Lucy was expecting (& maybe hoping) he would be.
This book was so fun!! Lots of giggles and blushing cringes.
Okay
Lucy is in the dumps because her boyfriend of three left her instead of asking her to move in like she expected. Add to that the need for a new roommate that happens to be her brother’s best friend and everything is mixed up. Especially since Lucy recalls her crush on him since forever.
Connor has left everything on the West Coast and moved to New York. It’s great that his best friend’s sister needs a roommate, but she’s grown into a beauty and he’s not sure if moving in with her was such a good idea.
To help her get out of her doldrums, Connor makes a bet with Lucy. She needs to try getting over her ex the way a man would, just getting out and meeting someone new instead of her way of Ben & Jerry and constant viewings of Titanic. Who will win this bet?
Short review. Enjoyable read from start to finish. Cat Carmine has a new fan. The book is fun, flirty, sexy and funny, there were so many times that I laugh and chuckle. Lucy and Connor are such a relatable and likable characters, I also like Lucy’s friends and am looking for reading their books.
*mini spoiler* I loved Lucy’s brother’s reaction to finding out about Connor and Lucy, it wasn’t the typical cliche drama filled way.*mini spoiler over*
Very cute story about a best friends little sister.
Follow the story of Lucy, who’s always had a crush on her brothers best friend Connor. But of course being the little sister of his best friend, Lucy is supposed to be off limits to Connor. But moving back to NY and needing a place to stay, and Lucy needing a new roommate, their moving in together can be a recipe for disaster, or love!
I enjoyed this story, this was my first book by this author and I will definitely be reading more by her! 5 stars, grab this now!
Man I am loving these books by Cat! They are funny and sweet and romantic, the perfect combination for romcoms. And she has all the right ingredients for this book!! Lucy is a baking blogger and man did this book make me hungry for some of her sweets she was making. And she needs a roommate so her brother hooks her up with his best friend that just moved back to town. That Lucy so happened to have a crush on when she was younger and he still gets her all tongue tied. Conner comes in and sees his best friends little sister isn’t so little anymore but he can’t cross that bro code. But the chemistry they have is off the charts. But Lucy doesn’t think they are good for each other at all. Can they actually be good together or will Lucy’s insecurities get in the way or Conners fear of the bro code stand in the way? Read this book and find out what happens I promise this is worth the read!! I highly recommend it. – By Tina
Brothers best friend story. Both Lucy and Connor have had a recent break up and now flat sharing they make a bet as to the best way to get over an ex.
The characters are warm and relatable. The story is witty and entertaining
My favourite quote when Lucy realises he ex really is not worth her tears- “Maybe it’s because now I know what it’s like to have someone who enjoys my company. Who makes an effort with me. Who can make me laugh”
I volunteered to read and review an advanced readers copy of The Break Up Bet .a really enjoyable story . The characters are wonderful . Lucy and Conner are delightful . Lucy use to have a crush on Connor her brothers best friend growing up . Now all grown up attractions develop when Connor moves in to share rent with Lucy . The Break-Up Bet
Cat Carmine
I was expecting more from The Break-Up Bet. In my opinion, it was so-so.
I liked the characters, the idea of the book is nice, but something was missing.
Two things could have been more developed, the bet and their lives as roommates. I liked their relationship, I really looked like they already knew each other and there was familiarity between them.
Anyhow, I’m a little sad because the book had potential and I didn’t think it was bad, but I didn’t think it was good either.
Thank you for generously providing me this ARC in exchange of a honest review.

The Break-Up Bet
Cat Carmine
Eu estava esperando mais de The Break-Up Bet.

Lucy was the younger sister of Kyle and as a teenager had a big crush on his best mate Connor. As an adult she has just come out of a three year relationship with Lou. She thought he was safe and reliable and wouldn’t break her heart like her father had done to her mother. When she was upset or anxious she baked a lot. She ran a food blog where she tried out unusual combinations of ingredients. She had agreed to help out Connor and have him stay as a room mate. The morning of Connor moving in she was busy in the kitchen, she hadn’t seen him for many years and he had changed a lot. Even more handsome and a super physique. She acted a bit hostile towards him to begin with, but then they made a bet to see who was best at getting over a break-up as he also had broken up with someone. Poor Lucy gets herself into some predicaments and always backed away. She could not let herself fall for Connor, he would not want her, he was a playboy!!! Would Connor be the exception to the rule?? I found this book humorous in places and it flowed nicely.
It’s very rare these days that I grab a book by an author I’ve absolutely never heard of. Cat Carmine is my recent find, and between the cover and blurb for this book, I couldn’t pass up the chance to try someone new.
And my decision paid off because I really enjoyed this book!
Connor is amazing. He’s so much more than what you’re expecting. This guy is smart, successful, oozes charm and charisma, and has this fun, open personality that just puts you at ease. He’s sweet and kind, but also rough and dirty. He’s sexy and irresistible and so much fun.
Lucy is a mess of the best kind. I absolutely love her. She’s quirky and funny, with an upbeat personality and awkwardness for days. She can be shy and quiet and flip to unfiltered and crazy in the blink of an eye. There’s never a dull moment when she’s around.
From the very first page you could feel the chemistry between these two. Their witty banter and crazy shenanigans will keep you on your toes and their slow-burning chemistry will have you flipping the pages at a rapid pace to see what happens next. I definitely made the right choice when I picked up this book. The Break-up Bet is a fun, flirty read and Cat Carmine just found herself a new fan. I can’t wait to read her other books.
Lucy has always had a crush on her older brother’s best friend Connor. Years after she last saw him, he is moving to New York and needs a place to stay, and she needs a roommate. Lucy’s brother connects them and he moves in. They are both recovering from unexpected breakups. Connor thinks Lucy should do what men do to get over a breakup, and she thinks he should do what women do. So they make a bet, and coach each other through the process. The first one to hook up and move on wins six months rent.
This was a pretty good book. I enjoyed it, but it wasn’t super original. The bro code thing came into play yet again (eyeroll) but it wasn’t bad like in some books I’ve read. Lucy and Connor have good chemistry, and they have history.
Overall, I enjoyed this one but didn’t love it.

When Lucy gets a new roommate who just happens to be her brother’s best friend, the guy she used to have a crush on, she thinks she can handle living with Connor, no problem. Connor, like Lucy, has just been through a bad break-up, and they have had different ways of coping. But then someone (Connor) gets the bright idea to have a bet on whose process for dealing with a break-up is better – hers that involves ice cream and binging on sappy chick flicks, or his which involves porn and whisky. Whoever moves on first, wins. It sounds iffy to Lucy, but as Connor said, no matter who loses, wins anyway.
The Break-Up Bet is so sweet and adorable. Lucy is definitely a dork, but in a cute way, and Connor definitely notices. And Connor was just as adorable as Lucy, so them together as a couple were even better than them separately. Cat Carmine is fast becoming one of my favorite writers with her sexy heroes, and sweet, strong heroines, I can’t wait for whatever story she has in store for us next. I hope it’s Tess and Noah’s!
An enjoyable light well written delightfully fun story. Connor and Lucy were relateable, well developed and have hot sizzling sexual chemistry. There were cameos from previous fun, strong, and likeable secondary characters making this standalone even more awesome. This romantic comedy was fantastic with is flirty storyline with an unexpected twist, and angst with a slow buildup to love and a HEA. I voluntarily reviewed this ARC.
This was the first book I’ve had the pleasure of reading by Cat Carmine and it won’t be my last. With that being said I don’t think this is a first in a series but you can definitely enjoy it anyways for sure.
Lucy and Conner were a great couple to read about. Starting out as more roommates then friends but have the history since he has been her brother’s best friends since they were kids. They develop their own friendship and that leads to the bet and all the funny and emotional growth and more that make this book one that you can’t put down.
I highly recommend this book and all its enjoyable moments. This book will have you hooked and have you not wanting to put it down at all. Cat will be an author that I will be following from now on.
Lots of fun in this steamy friends-to-lovers romance!
Aww, Lucy, what a wonderful character! So sweet and caring, it was time for her to find her HEA. Connor is her brother’s best friend, who needs a place to stay in NYC. Lucky for him, Lucy’s roommate just moved out so she’s got an empty room. She’s also got a huge crush on the delectable Connor, one that she’s determined to ignore because she’s convinced he’s exactly the kind of guy she can’t trust.
Both Lucy and Connor are getting over recent break-ups, so they bet on whose method for moving on is most effective. This leads to some absolutely wonderful scenes as Connor is encouraged to do all the usual girl grief activities, while Lucy is directed to let loose and move on by acting like a player. Throughout it all, their combustible chemistry is at odds with their preconceived ideas, until finally things reach a boiling point.
How these two work out their HEA was delightful and heartwarming, and Connor is on my list of the most charming and sincere book boyfriends. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
It never fails…
I cant control the giggles or the squealing when I read Cats books. Her characters are just so outrageous and perfect. The types that I want as my own best friend.
Then you get to the chemistry and it is WHITE HOT! The steamy scenes had me fanning myself. Then we get to the ending, which was beyond a shadow of a doubt, perfect.
I would highly recommend this book.
P.s. Cat, I am ready for the next book anytime. Yesterday is preferred =)
Happy reading!
