The #1 New York Times–bestselling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany and now the inspiration for the PBS documentary “The Boys of ‘36’.”For readers of Unbroken, out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times—the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American … working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.
It was an unlikely quest from the start. With a team composed of the sons of loggers, shipyard workers, and farmers, the University of Washington’s eight-oar crew team was never expected to defeat the elite teams of the East Coast and Great Britain, yet they did, going on to shock the world by defeating the German team rowing for Adolf Hitler. The emotional heart of the tale lies with Joe Rantz, a teenager without family or prospects, who rows not only to regain his shattered self-regard but also to find a real place for himself in the world. Drawing on the boys’ own journals and vivid memories of a once-in-a-lifetime shared dream, Brown has created an unforgettable portrait of an era, a celebration of a remarkable achievement, and a chronicle of one extraordinary young man’s personal quest.

A worthy read narrated by someone who actually lived this inspiring, true story. An avid reader of fiction since childhood, I have more recently discovered a passion for nonfiction stories of historical events. This was one of the books that first showed me that the most interesting story isn’t created from the imagination, but is a part of …
Too much information about the boats.
I would recommend this book, especially for older teenagers or young adults. Oh, what a team can accomplish once they put their mind to it. Remember it is true, there is no “I” in team.
One of my all time favorites
One of the best books I’ve ever read. I couldn’t put it down. What a story! And all true.
Loved this book the first and the second time I read it. My Dad was a Queen Anne H.S. student – soon to be UW student during this timespan This book brings to life some of his stories about Seattle during the 30’s.
This is a wonderful book. You get to know the characters very well. You cheer for them, you shed a tear for them and hope they all become successful.
If you love history and a really great story…this is a keeper. I would read it again. Loved this book.
A great true story of the rowing team that won the Olympics. So inspirational!
This book was very interesting and informative
A wonderful “American” book.
Terrific story of courage, perseverance, and commitment to the team. Should be a “must-read” for your people.
An adventure! Each oarsman is featured and the stories of practices and races really keep you riveted.
Excellent book, highly recommend
This should become a classic.
I found the book very bogged down in details about how to build a boat. The history of the 1936 Olympics was interesting
It was interesting in the fact department, but it was a bit dull in my opinion. It was difficult to finish.
Super book about following you dreams and setting your sight on a goal
This book is a realistic, wonderful account of the University of Washington Crew Team’s journey from their beginning to the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The strength and determination shown, particularly by those less economically fortunate, is truly inspiring. I really loved this book!
Great historical focus on the University of Washington crew that went to the 1936 Olympics. A great read even for those who aren’t rowers, but if you are any kind of athlete, you will appreciate the work that goes their preparations.
