The #1 New York Times–bestselling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany and now the inspiration for the PBS documentary “The Boys of ‘36’.”For readers of Unbroken, out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times—the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American … working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.
It was an unlikely quest from the start. With a team composed of the sons of loggers, shipyard workers, and farmers, the University of Washington’s eight-oar crew team was never expected to defeat the elite teams of the East Coast and Great Britain, yet they did, going on to shock the world by defeating the German team rowing for Adolf Hitler. The emotional heart of the tale lies with Joe Rantz, a teenager without family or prospects, who rows not only to regain his shattered self-regard but also to find a real place for himself in the world. Drawing on the boys’ own journals and vivid memories of a once-in-a-lifetime shared dream, Brown has created an unforgettable portrait of an era, a celebration of a remarkable achievement, and a chronicle of one extraordinary young man’s personal quest.

I’m a rower but even if you’re not, an oddball team and pulled together team! Worth reading!
great true story
for those who know about crewing it’s a good read. Didn’t do it for me
Reading this should make everyone better.
Absolutely superb!
Listened to it. Outstanding.
A great sports story that even arm-chair readers will love
This book was highly recommended to me. I wasn’t sure I would enjoy it because I know nothing about rowing but reading is the best way to continue to learn once we’ve finished school. This book is outstanding. I loved it for the story, the characters, the writing. I highly recommend it.
Great history of the Washington crew team who won the Olympics In Berlin during reign of Hitler. Interesting details of the lives of the crew team, some from childhood and the obstacles they overcame to even be able to attend the university. At times I felt I was in the boat with them.
Excellent book. I’m so surprised to find that the world of rowing and especially the building of the boats was fascinating.
Fantastic book
The next best thing to rowing
Excellent story of the Berlin Olympic rowing squad. Well told historical narrative whose message is timeless.
Great non-fiction about rowing!!!
Very inspirational, this true story delves into the importance of being dedicated, unselfish and trusting your teammates to succeed. George Picock had numerous inspirational messages prior to each chapter.
Too repetitive and the hype on this book made me expect more.
Very inspirational read on what people can accomplish when they really try.
This was one of the best books I have ever read. It was hard to believe that these boys lived through some of the toughest times in our country and yet they persevered. This was not just about one boys success but an ultimate team effort. A truly inspirational read!
Amazing story! A great piece of history. It shows the indomitable spirit of these 9 boys which was an indicator of all Americans at the time. Sadness, hard work, and sheer will power lead to a great triumph. A truly inspirational work. These boys should be held up as role models for today’s youth, not only those involved in sports, but also …
A test of American courage and determination in the glare of Hitler’s ‘38 Olympics.
