I can’t say enough about the work of Farrah Rochon, and this book was her best yet. Three women find out they’re all dating the same guy. A video of their confrontation with him goes viral, and the insta-fame and unwanted attention causes Samiah to reexamine her life. Farrah is one of the best contemporary romance authors out there—period. Wry humor, intelligence and relatable characters make her books a must-read.
Loved this entertaining and realistic read. The friendship is the heart of this book and it’s fantastic to experience.
Hooray for a book that features strong, smart women friendships as much as a budding romance. The premise is fun (women bond after being duped by the same man and plan to focus on themselves to exclusion of men for six months) and written so well. I’m a self-professed technodolt, but did appreciate Samiah’s passion for her STEM job, as well as the obstacles she had to face as a black female in that very male-dominated space. Of course, with a hero like Daniel, her ‘pact’ with her friends becomes a problem, too. Cute banter, great relatable characters, and the kind of hero you want to bring home to meet your mom make this romance a winner!
Absolutely Unputdownable
I don’t know if that’s even a real word, but this book sucks you in from the first page. I ADORE Samiah Brooks. This book is reminiscent of the movie The Other Woman in that the heroine’s dealing with a cheating jerk and befriends the other women tangled in his web. London and Taylor shine in their own ways and I am hoping and praying for books about them.
Samiah and Daniel have incredible chemistry from the moment they meet, and Rochon does a brilliant job with the slow burn will they/won’t they/HOW will they that keeps readers glued until the very last page.
Highly recommend!
Loved the STEM heroine and hero! Great setup for a new series.
Fantastic! I love reading about smart people who are not only self-aware but thoughtful and kind. Add in a fabulous plot and I’m all in. A great read!
If you are looking for a refreshing new romance series with strong female characters, look no further than The Boyfriend Project by Farrah Rochon! This book was absolutely hilarious, and I loved everything about it. I listened to the audio and was very impressed with the narrator, Je Nie Fleming. This is the first time I have heard her narrate and I definitely don’t want it to be my last. I highly recommend doing the audio for this book because I really thought it brought a lot to the story listening to Fleming read it.
I think The Boyfriend Project is a perfect start to the series, and it definitely left me wanting more of all the characters. It is a lot of fun, but it also had a crime/mystery aspect that I loved! There is a little bit of steam but nothing too crazy, which is exactly the type of romance I like. It was truly romcom perfection and I could easily see this being made into a movie. Samiah was such a great character as well as the women she meets after realizing they are all dating the same guy. I don’t know what Rochon has in store for this series, but I know I can’t wait to find out.
I listened to almost the whole book in one day because I did not want to stop until I was done. Between the plot and different viewpoints, there was plenty to keep me going and nothing makes me happier in a book than strong women and awesome female friendships. There is so much to love about The Boyfriend Project and I highly recommend it to all the romcom lovers out there! And if you like audio that is definitely the way to go with this one. I will now be impatiently waiting for book two and will also be checking out Rochon’s backlist since she is a new-to-me author.
Thank you to Libro.fm and the publisher for my advance listening copy. All opinions and thoughts are my own.
This book has been getting SO MUCH hype lately . . . and it completely lives up to the hype. While the premise sounded really freakin’ cute (three women discover they’re all dating the same man, forge a friendship and vow to take six months to work on themselves and not date except wait one of them has a brand-new super hot coworker) it didn’t sound particularly . . . riveting? Unique? Special? But I bought into the bookstagram hype and gave it a try. And this book delivered! IT IS SO MUCH MORE THAN ITS BLURB. I understand why some of the more interesting details can’t be put on the book jacket, as there’s a benefit to the element of surprise, but I wish the blurb would convey how much more interesting and awesome and exciting this book is than how its described. And how little that three (or more?) timing ex-boyfriend actually matters to the plot. I also want to take a moment to give a three cheers for portraying a woman in STEM, which we don’t see enough of in fiction, ESPECIALLY in romance. My biggest piece of advice is if you read the blurb for this book and are on the fence, GIVE IT A TRY.
Samiah Brooks was blindsided when she found out that her boyfriend was cheating on her. What was maybe more unexpected for Samiah is the friendship she forms with the other TWO women – Taylor and London. Together they decide to help each other work on themselves, their goals and their dreams sans looking for a boyfriend – hence The Boyfriend Project is born.
Samiah is on board with this until she meets Daniel Collins – a new hire at Trendsetters, the tech company where Samiah works. Daniel and Samiah immediately click and he has her wanting to throw The Boyfriend Project out the window, except she can’t put her previous boyfriend’s betrayal behind her. It’s not the only circumstance in Samiah’s life that keeps her from openly trusting. Should she put aside her past experiences? Or is Daniel Collins really a little too good to be true?
The first words I would use to describe The Boyfriend Project are Fresh and Refreshing. For me, it upped the romance game big time.
I was really impressed with how Farrah Rochon was able to balance all the varying aspects of the story. When I sit down and think about it, there are quite a few, which is why I’m so impressed that the author was able to give every aspect its due. I didn’t feel like there was anything skimmed over or quickly brushed aside.
I know that many will view this as a romance first. And to be fair it is. I truly loved the build up of Samiah and Daniel’s feelings for one another. It was paced and teased just right. It also lends itself well to the overarching conflict within the story which I won’t talk about too much in order to keep a few things a surprise! But I will say that the conflict is expertly built and integrated throughout the story and I felt like it was handled in a way that didn’t feel too rushed.
But there were a couple things about the book that overshadowed the romance for me – in a good way. One being the female friendships. This is probably the thing in the story I could have done with more of. As it stands I love seeing women empower each other instead of used as competition. Taylor and London and Samiah provide that support system for each other and I think their relationship is more important to the story than the romance. It’s the touchstone for all that Samiah does. When she’s hesitant about starting a new business venture, she talks things out with London and Taylor and gains much needed perspective. The same when she confides in them her feelings for Daniel. Without setting up these women, the story would have been very different. I would love to see more interactions between them, but I’m pretty positive that in setting this up as a series, there’ll be plenty of time for that when Taylor and London inevitably get their own books.
The second thing that I thought was completely on point is Samiah herself. Specifically, Samiah knowing her worth, knowing what she brings to the table in regards to her job and her capabilities and not being afraid to acknowledge this and not being afraid to demand her worth. I loved that Samiah works in technology. I am not a tech person so I’m may bumble through describing things in this part so bear with me. I loved seeing a character being successful in her job, loving her job, knowing she is the BOSS when it comes to her job. So often I feel like we don’t get to see these aspects because they can be used as another way to convey conflict or tension in the story for our main character. So instead of seeing someone own their capabilities readers are coming in at a point where they’re slipping. Not here. Here we see Samiah thriving in her work even when things personally seem to be going downhill.
It’s also encouraging to see women in IT. I know that it’s a burgeoning field and I think that Farrah Rochon does a great job in making sure that readers know that computers and technology can be a girl thing too. She takes it a step further by talking about Samiah being a woman of color in a male dominated field. How much harder she has to work to be taken seriously and to get to where she’s at today, but making sure that we know she is there because of her capabilities. Adding layers, relevancy, and a voice, but not making it seem like boxes are being checked.
This is the first book I’ve read by Farrah Rochon, but it won’t be the last as I’m pretty excited where she plans to take Taylor and London’s stories.
The Boyfriend Project by Farrah Rochon is a funny, sweet, empowering, and enjoyable story about friendship, loyalty, being true to yourself, and of course about romance.
I loved all the characters in this book. Pairing this with the awesome plot, this is most definitely a winner.
I enjoyed the pact and friendship that develops between the three women that were wronged ( Samiah, London, and Taylor) by the skeezebucket. Samiah could have most definitely went another direction after finding out she was being cheated on by her bf on Twitter no less, but instead banded together with the other gals to swear off men for 6 months and support each other in the process. I love that these are strong and passionate women, and I enjoyed this aspect of the plot most of all.
That is not to say I did not love the romance aspect between Samiah and Daniel as well, because I do and it makes the book that much better. Of course he would enter her life during this hold-out, and of course she is torn between what she feels and how she might affect her friends.
This is an excellent book, with excellent characters, and an amazing and creative plot. This is the first in a new series, and it is off to a great start. I can’t wait to read the subsequent books.
5/5 stars
Thank you NetGalley and Forever(Grand Central Publishing) for this ARC and in return I am submitting my unbiased and voluntary review and opinion.
This was my first romcom, I was apprehensive about reading it at first, then I got excited to try it out! My bookstagram partner LOVES romcom and finally talked me into trying it.
Words to describe the book: funny, entertaining, steamy parts (a few), addictive
I have to say- I absolutely adored this book! Female friendship was written really well in this story- the ladies met after finding out their “boyfriend” had 3 girlfriends. Instead of resenting each other, they banded together and became besties. Samiah works at a tech company and meets Daniel- the new hire. From day 1 they begin falling for each other. Samiah and Daniel’s banter was so cute and made me laugh. I enjoyed that the author wove in a mystery throughout the story. If I had one con, it would be that I wished the story would have been told in 1st person vs. 3rd. If you are looking for a fun, light, quick read, The Boyfriend Project is for you
I loved everything about this book, even if I personally would’ve made the hero squirm a bit more before forgiving him. It’s a great love story with many unforgettable characters. Can’t wait to read London and Taylor’s stories!
A cute romance with an undercover twist. The cute funny love story of Daniel and Samiah. I know I’m late to the party but I had to read part 1 before Part 2 comes out and I am counting the days. This book was spicy, funny and romantic. I feel in love with the characters. A must read!
Expectations are a funny thing, but in this case The Boyfriend Project met what I anticipated based off talking to some friends who had already read it. I read this now since book two is releasing later this month. I’ve heard the next book is far better so I’m looking forward to reading it soon.
I think the strong beginning and female friendships bonding over a shared cheating ex was a great theme. I really wish it had stayed more prevalent through the later half of the novel. I get that it’s a romance and less women’s fiction, but I enjoyed those scenes with Taylor and London. The beginning is reminiscent of the film The Other Woman and the Central Park Pact series by Lauren Layne.
I really appreciated the strength exhibited by Samiah; that she’s a young woman in STEM and didn’t let a rotten scoundrel drag her down. Again, I think if the focus had been more on character – which the beginning seemed to be directing me to – rather than romance, I would feel differently about the conclusion.
This was an excellent book. I loved getting to know these characters and exploring their world. It was a lot of fun and I can’t wait for the next in the series.
3.5
Titled after a pact made between three women who had been wronged by the same man, this book started with lots of drama from page one. It was a light, predictable read with some elements of surprise.
What would have been a 4 rating for me lost half of a star because of the unnecessary profanity.

First Impressions:
The boyfriend project is a contemporary romance the features a heroine in the STEM field! Samiah, a badass computer engineer, has recently gone through a bad breakup, causing her to make a pact with friends to focus on herself. Daniel, an ex-marine now white-collar crime undercover investigator, is trying to make a big bust at Samiah’s workplace. Neither of them is looking for love, but they say it happens when you least expect it!
Characters:
Samiah:
Daniel:
Likes:
The leads that are POC, I love when the hero is a BM or POC!
The emphasis on women in STEM and how amazing Samiah was as a heroine.
Dislikes:
Daniel talked a big game when it came to dirty talk that I feel like he did not deliver on.
The sexy scenes were mainly lukewarm and encouraged you to use your imagination.
Daniel was not held accountable for his actions in the end. (won’t go into detail b/c spoilers)
Ravished Rating:
Overall, this was my first read by Rochon, and I expected more steam to match the romance, and the dirty talked that Daniel gave to me. Therefore, when I read to 50%, and I got a tepid warm sex scene, I was disappointed. Everything else other than the steam factor and the lack of accountability for Daniel I loved.
After Samiah finds out that she has been duped along with two other women, they bond together and swear off boyfriends for 6 months. Samiah is a strong and independent woman whom has goals of creating her own app and being a role model. I loved this character development! Samiah meets Daniel and begins to wonder if her “Boyfriend Project” should be null and void. Will an office relationship work?
I loved everything about this book! The relationship between the three women is every bit as charming and inspiring as the relationship between Samiah and Daniel. I adored Daniel and Samiah together, and found the setup unique and sexy. Eighteen-zillion stars!
The power of girlfriends you meet despite the viral video setting. Hooray Samoan, Taylor & London.
The excitement of unexpected romantic connection when you are not looking for love and when you don’t want to do lover. Yay, Samoan and Daniel.
Wow. Intrigue in the tech world that is accessible to the non-techie.
Very enjoyable.
